Summary: The research found that cigarette excise taxes decrease smoking rates, but also shift market share towards stronger brands; market leaders are less affected by tax policies, while smoke-free restrictions cause a shift away from stronger brands; minimal effects on brand choice and consumption are found in anti-smoking advertising.

Summary: The study found that higher taxes reduce demand for tobacco products, with the tobacco parity proposal reducing purchases of all tobacco products and increasing purchases of medicinal nicotine, while the harm reduction proposal leads to greater purchases of electronic nicotine delivery systems and smokeless tobacco. These findings suggest that differential taxation based on product risk can effectively incentivize smokers to switch to less harmful products.

Summary: This study uses a unique natural experiment of compulsory relocation of U.S. military service members to estimate the relationship between state cigarette taxes and smoking behavior. The results show that higher taxes are associated with lower smoking rates and higher quit rates, providing novel evidence for the causal impact of cigarette taxes on adult smoking levels.

Summary: The aim of this article is to assess the impact of changes in excise duty rates on the development of the domestic tobacco industry in terms of prices, consumption, and tax revenue. The study used methods such as statistical comparative analysis, market dynamics, exponential regression analysis, and financial ratio analysis. The research shows that the tobacco industry in Poland experienced rapid development between 2010 and 2021 due to foreign direct investments and competitiveness in the EU market. The increase in excise duty rates resulted in a decrease in cigarette consumption, but the consumption of innovative products compensated for it. The effectiveness of fiscal policy was demonstrated through growing budget revenues and reducing the shadow economy.

Summary: This study examines the impact of cigarette taxes on smuggling in Malawi and finds that increased excise taxes are not associated with increased cigarette smuggling. It also finds that an increase in bilateral exchange rate and corruption in partner countries are correlated with an increase in cigarette smuggling. The study contributes to the understanding of the complexities of cigarette smuggling and suggests that combating smuggling should involve measures beyond taxes such as anti-corruption efforts and strengthening the rule of law.

Summary: Tobacco regulation has been a significant aspect of health policy in developed countries, involving taxation, smoking bans, and regulations to reduce the appeal of tobacco products. The emergence of alternative products, such as e-cigarettes, has added complexity to tobacco regulation. The effectiveness of tobacco regulations and their impact on economic welfare are still subjects of debate.
