Summary: This study examines the association between spouse health and social participation among older Chinese adults, as well as the mediating role of loneliness and anxiety. The results show significant correlations between spousal health and social participation, loneliness, and anxiety. Spousal health not only directly affects social participation in older adults, but also indirectly through loneliness and anxiety.

Summary: The Portuguese version of the Risk Instrument for Screening in the Community (RISC) accurately predicted institutionalization and death at one-year but had less ability to predict hospitalization. Older age and living alone were associated with increased risk of institutionalization, hospitalization, or death.

Summary: The study validated the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) in an institutionalized sample of older adults, finding that the 8-item version demonstrated good reliability with a single factor explaining its variance. Additionally, GDS showed significant correlations with other relevant scales, indicating good concurrent validity.

Summary: Frailty in older adults, especially when combined with other health domains such as cognitive, psychological, and social aspects, can predict adverse outcomes including institutionalization and mortality. The risk of negative health outcomes increases with frailty in a higher number of domains, and specific combinations of frailty domains have varying effects on outcomes.

Summary: Participants who have at least one living child but lost their spouse had less psychological distress than those who have a living spouse but lost their only child. This effect appeared to be stronger in women than in men. Social support mediated the relationship between bereavement and loneliness among women.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to clarify the risk of older adults' nursing home placement by analyzing data from a long-term care insurance certification survey. The study found that basic movements and activities of daily living (ADLs) were significantly associated with nursing home placement. The findings suggest that occupational therapists should focus on older adults' declining ADLs and basic movements to ensure appropriate care.

Summary: Frailty and sarcopenia are age-associated syndromes that are often linked to functional decline and mortality. This study examined the role of sarcopenia in modulating transitions within frailty status, finding that sarcopenia impacted frailty transitions but did not affect the risk of death associated with frailty.

Summary: Guided by Moustakas' Transcendental Phenomenology, this study explores the lived experiences of older adults coping with institutionalization within senior living facilities and the established meanings in their day-to-day lives in an environment away from home. The results revealed various themes associated with the studied phenomenon, such as institutionalized life, not my choice, deindividualization, emotional dissonance, invisible boundaries, and the impact of repetition on confidence. These findings are important in the evolution of senior-friendly accommodations and have significant implications for academics, practitioners, policymakers, government agencies, senior living facilitators, and healthcare providers.

Summary: The study examined the association between provision or receipt of spouse care and marital quality among older married adults in Korea. It found that men who became caregivers for their wives experienced a small increase in marital satisfaction, while women experienced a decline. Receiving spouse care was associated with a decline in marital satisfaction among men, but an increase among women. New care from daughters, in the form of (I)ADL assistance, was beneficial to marital satisfaction for both men and women receiving care from their spouses.

Summary: This study investigated the predictive value of specific fall patterns on mortality after hip fracture, finding that certain high-risk fall patterns were associated with increased mortality in older adults with hip fracture. These high-risk fall patterns were found to have a higher mortality risk compared to low-risk patterns and outdoor falls, improving mortality prediction when added to a base model including age, sex, and comorbidities.

Summary: Perceived physical fatigability is a common issue among older adults and is associated with mobility decline and other health consequences. This study found that perceived physical fatigability is independently associated with the risk of death among older adults, with higher fatigability scores indicating a higher risk of death.

Summary: Traditionally, the study of mortality differences between groups has focused on average levels of mortality, such as life expectancy and standardized mortality rates. However, using statistical distance metrics to examine differences in lifespan distributions between groups can provide additional insights. In this study, the non-overlap index is used to capture sociological stratification in lifespan. The findings based on Finnish registration data from 1996 to 2017 show that lifespan stratification and life-expectancy differences between income groups increased significantly from 1996 to 2008. The life-expectancy differences declined thereafter, while stratification stagnated for men and increased for women. The non-overlap index uncovers an unique domain of inequalities in mortality and helps capture important between-group differences that conventional approaches miss.

Summary: A recent study suggests a possible association between labor epidural analgesia and increased rates of offspring autism spectrum disorder. However, this cross-national study found no evidence to support the hypothesis that labor epidural analgesia causes either offspring autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, as the associations were fully attenuated when comparing full siblings who were differentially exposed to labor epidural analgesia.

Summary: This study explored the pathways into and out of single motherhood as well as the mental health trajectories of single mothers. The results showed that single mothers experienced an increase in antidepressant use during separation and a moderate decline after separation. Among women who experienced widowhood, those with underage children initially had lower antidepressant use compared to those without children, but this gap narrowed over time. Single women also had more unfavorable mental health trajectories than partnered women around the time of childbirth.

Summary: This study analyzes the victimization trajectories of partner violence against women surrounding divorce, depending on whether the couple has children together. The study found that the risk of crime victimization for partner assault was already elevated from 2 to 3 years before divorce, peaked in the year prior to divorce, and then mainly leveled off 1-2 years after divorce. Women with younger children experienced elevated risks of physical violence shortly before divorce and remained at higher risk of menace than women without children for a year after divorce.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the influence of changes in living arrangements on income differences in life expectancy over the past 30 years. The findings showed that the gap in life expectancy between the highest and lowest income quartiles initially increased but later decreased. The contribution of living arrangements to these differences remained stable, while external causes of death significantly influenced income differences in life expectancy.

The risk of late-onset dementia is also increased but to a lesser extent. Clinicians should be aware of the increased risk of dementia in individuals with a history or current AUD.

Summary: The effects of cohabitation and marriage on the risk of criminal behavior were examined using Finnish longitudinal register data. The analysis showed that individuals who were cohabiting or married had a significantly lower risk of being suspected of a crime compared to single individuals. The risk reduction was observed in both between-individual and within-individual analyses. Having a criminal partner significantly increased the risk of suspected crime, while forming a cohabiting relationship with a non-criminal partner was associated with reduced criminality.

Summary: Despite the increased focus on cold-related mortality, there has been limited research on hypothermia mortality and its associated factors. This study examined educational inequalities in hypothermia mortality in the Baltic countries and Finland. The results showed higher mortality rates in the Baltic countries compared to Finland, and although there was some reduction in absolute educational inequalities, there was a widening of relative inequalities.

Summary: The Oxford Mental Illness and Suicide tool (OxMIS) is a standardized tool for assessing suicide risk in individuals with severe mental illness. However, external validations for this tool are currently lacking. In this study, the performance of OxMIS was evaluated using a Finnish population sample of individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness. The tool showed good overall discrimination and excellent calibration when using a recommended 5% maximum predicted suicide risk threshold.

Summary: Social relationships between generations and within generations impact intergenerational income mobility. Parents influence their children's future opportunities through socialization and resource transmission during upbringing. Additionally, children's self-acquired social contacts, such as school friendships, can also have long-term effects. This study examines the association between having a high-income classroom friend (privileged friend) and upward income mobility, particularly for individuals from low-income backgrounds.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between sociodemographic factors of Finnish urban residents and mortality and hospitalization rates, finding a correlation between neighborhood income disparities and both mortality and hospitalization rates, especially for mortality caused by external factors. Although neighborhood income disparities have a significant impact on health outcomes, their influence is relatively smaller compared to individual-level economic status.
