Summary: The disruption of pair bonds in monogamous rodents is associated with increased oncogenic potential of lung cancer cells, while bonding suppresses tumorigenicity even after the bond is broken. Transcriptomes and gene expression of cancer cells are influenced by the bonding experiences of serum donors. This study questions the ability of conventional mouse models to fully capture the impact of host-induced effects in tumorigenesis.

Summary: Necropsy of dairy cattle is an important tool for diagnosing the cause of death. This study summarized the primary causes of death in dairy animals from Utah and other states. It found that some fatal diseases in dairy cattle could be diagnosed before death and necropsy diagnosis can guide management practices to reduce death rates in dairy herds.

Summary: This study aims to assess the underlying and contributing causes of stillbirth in India and Pakistan. The findings indicate that fetal asphyxia is the major cause of stillbirth in South Asia, and several placental lesions, as well as maternal hypertension, are associated with fetal death.

Summary: The death of a partner may be particularly stressful for unmarried intimate partners due to the lack of legal status and cultural support. This study on Israeli bereaved intimate partners of fallen soldiers found that they attribute meanings of unfinished business, hidden wounds, and relationship-guided lives to the loss of their partners. Practical implications were discussed based on these findings.

Summary: Very few studies have explored the couplehood relationship in blended families with young children created after widowhood. This study interviewed 30 Israeli women to understand their experience of starting a family with a widower and found that the deceased wife continues to play a significant role in the partner's life, posing unique challenges to women in these relationships. The findings shed light on the complexity of couples with a widower and can inform professionals in supporting these women.

Summary: This study compares the incidence and causes of sudden death between housed and unhoused individuals. The results show that unhoused individuals are more likely to experience sudden death, and the main causes are noncardiac issues and arrhythmias, the latter of which can be prevented with the use of a defibrillator.

Summary: The increasing mortality rate among dairy cows is a global problem in modern production systems, causing economic losses and indicating health and welfare issues. This study aimed to determine the causes of on-farm mortality in Finnish dairy cows, assess the usefulness of histopathologic analysis in necropsies, and evaluate the reliability of producers' perception about the cause of death. The most common underlying causes of death were mastitis, followed by digestive disorders, known disorders, calving-related disorders, and locomotion disorders. Necropsies, including routine histopathologic analysis, provided accurate and reliable information for developing control programs for cow mortality.

Summary: Research suggests that individuals who have recently lost a spouse have higher mortality rates. This can be explained by medical and psychological factors such as broken heart syndrome, as well as sociological factors relating to shared social-environmental exposures between spouses. Our study expands on sociological perspectives by highlighting the importance of couples' social connections to others. Using data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, we found that mortality is influenced by the level of embeddedness of one's spouse within their social network. The widowhood effect is stronger among those whose spouses had weaker connections with other network members. We speculate that the loss of a less embedded spouse signifies the loss of unique and valuable social resources within one's network. We discuss theoretical interpretations, alternative explanations, limitations, and future research directions.

Summary: Individual life expectancies are important for retirement decisions and policy making, but for couples, calculating joint and survivor life expectancies using individual measures can be misleading. Inequities in individual life expectancies are compounded into joint and survivor measures due to assortative marriage, emphasizing the need for more complex couple life cycle models. Trends over time show how decreases in mortality rates for men and women can affect joint and survivor life expectancies.
