Summary: This study revealed a trend in the selection of ranibizumab and aflibercept for initial treatment of neovascular AMD and PCV, with ranibizumab preferred in older patients and those with type 3 MNV, and aflibercept highly preferred in patients with PCV. The variance in patient characteristics and efficacy of the two agents may have influenced this trend.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between serum metabolome and treatment response to anti-VEGF therapy in nAMD and PCV patients. The study found that metabolites such as LPC and diacylglycerophosphocholine impact the response to conbercept treatment, with LPC 18:0 identified as a potential biomarker to discriminate responders from non-responders. The findings suggest that metabolites may be useful for guiding treatment options in nAMD and PCV.

Summary: This study investigates the differential regulation of lipid metabolism mediated by apolipoproteins in polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). The results suggest that lipid profiles and apolipoproteins are differentially regulated in PCV, nAMD, and their subtypes, indicating different pathogenicity contributes to the different phenotypes of PCV and nAMD.

Summary: The study found that the incidence rate of massive submacular haemorrhage was significantly higher in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy compared to those with typical neovascular age-related macular degeneration. The number of photodynamic therapies, cluster type of polypoidal lesion, and number of anti-VEGF injections were significantly associated with the risk of massive submacular haemorrhage.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of probable polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) among white patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) using non-indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) criteria. The results showed that the prevalence of probable PCV was 23.4% in white individuals with nAMD, and it was more commonly found in non-Hispanic white individuals.

Summary: The study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of non-invasive monitoring tests for detecting neovascular age-related macular degeneration and found that spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was the most effective method, generating higher quality-adjusted life-years and lower health and social care costs per patient compared to other individual tests. The early treatment of the second eye following confirmation of SD-OCT positive findings is expected to maintain better visual acuity and quality of life while reducing overall healthcare costs over patients' lifetimes.

Summary: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is a major cause of sight loss, and early detection and treatment are crucial. Current practice involves monitoring the unaffected eye of patients with the disease in one eye, but the diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tests is unclear. This study aims to determine the diagnostic monitoring performance, cost-effectiveness, and predictive factors of developing the disease in the second eye of patients with unilateral neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Summary: The majority of choroidal tumors can be accurately diagnosed using clinical examination and non-invasive imaging techniques. However, biopsies may be required for diagnostic clarity in certain cases, such as small melanocytic or indeterminate lesions, choroidal metastases, or rarer conditions like uveal lymphoma. There is also an increasing use of biopsy techniques for prognostication in uveal melanoma. This review explores the main indications and surgical techniques for tumor acquisition, as well as an optimized approach to improve successful yield for histological and genetic analysis.

Summary: The study investigated the phenotype, variability, and penetrance of IMPG2-related maculopathy. The results showed that mono-allelic IMPG2 variants could result in haploinsufficiency manifesting as a maculopathy with variable penetrance and expressivity. The maculopathy is usually limited to the fovea and is associated with moderate visual impairment.
