Parental Educational Attainment, the Superior Temporal Cortical Surface Area, and Reading Ability among American Children: A Test of Marginalization-Related Diminished Returns

Shervin Assari, Shanika Boyce, Mohsen Bazargan, Alvin Thomas, Ryon J. Cobb, Darrell Hudson, Tommy J. Curry, Harvey L. Nicholson, Adolfo G. Cuevas, Ritesh Mistry, Tabbye M. Chavous, Cleopatra H. Caldwell, Marc A. Zimmerman

High Systolic Blood Pressure of High-Income African American Children

Shervin Assari, Babak Najand, Seyedeh Mohaddeseh Khatami

Summary: According to the MDRs theory, racism may diminish the health returns of family socioeconomic status resources for racial minorities. This study aimed to compare the effects of family income on pre-adolescents' blood pressure, examine racial variation in this effect, and explore whether racial differences in body mass index contribute to this variation. The findings suggest that the association between high family income and reduced blood pressure may be weaker for African Americans compared to Whites, which can be explained by higher body mass index among African American adolescents.
