Summary: The study reveals that over half of hospitalized older adults are at risk of malnutrition or malnourished, and the majority of older inpatients have poor physical performance. Handgrip strength and SPPB are recommended as alternative measures of muscle mass for malnutrition management in this population.

Summary: This study investigated the association between serum leptin levels and healthcare-associated infections in hospitalized older patients. The results showed that women with lower leptin levels were more likely to experience healthcare-associated infections, and this association may be mediated by nutritional status.

Summary: This pilot study aimed to investigate the impact of a bedside activity device on the functional status of hospitalized older adults. The intervention group showed significant improvements in Katz ADL scores and decreased TUG times, while there were no significant changes in the control group. The use of the bedside activity device in addition to standard care may prevent functional decline and increase independence in performing basic ADLs.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that hospitalized older adults should walk at least 20-minutes daily to minimize functional decline. A study conducted in Melbourne, Australia found that a daily walking-exercise dose equivalent to 20-min was associated with less functional decline in older adults.

Summary: By utilizing home automation, power, and wearable sensors, our system continuously monitors the functional status of older adults and allows healthcare professionals to create personalized rehabilitation programs based on changes in their functional capacity and daily life performance. The system successfully passed pre-clinical validation using real-world data and showed usability in designing personalized rehabilitation measures. Further clinical studies are needed to fully validate the system, as this research is in its early stages.

Summary: Combination treatment with baricitinib plus remdesivir was superior to remdesivir alone in reducing recovery time and accelerating improvement in clinical status among patients with Covid-19, notably among those receiving high-flow oxygen or noninvasive ventilation. The combination was associated with fewer serious adverse events.

Summary: This study analyzed the associations between nutritional status and various parameters of functional status, physical performance, physical activity, and frailty among older adults living in long-term nursing homes. The results suggest that interventions targeting improvements in both nutritional and functional status may lead to better health and quality of life for long-term nursing home residents. Interdisciplinary professional teams may be the most successful in implementing strategies to improve these parameters.

Summary: There is currently no global consensus on diagnostic criteria for malnutrition. This review explores the use of body composition assessment (BCA) and functional status assessment (FSA) tools in nutrition assessment (NA) and monitoring the response to nutrition interventions (RNI) in adult inpatients. The results show that bioimpedance methods are the most widely used BCA tools, while handgrip strength is the most widely used FSA tool. However, these methods are used with different protocols and interpretation practices, highlighting the need for validation studies and standardized assessment protocols.

Summary: The study evaluated the joint effect of cognitive impairment and socio-family condition on functional status in hospitalized older adults. Findings suggest that the combination of cognitive impairment and social deterioration has a more significant impact on functional status than each factor separately.

Summary: This study found that higher total energy expenditure in older adults was associated with better performance in gait speed tests, 6-minute walk tests, and handgrip strength. Multivariate analysis adjusted for sex and fat-free mass showed an association between total energy expenditure and the 6-minute walk test, as well as the number of sedentary events. Therefore, in clinical practice, older individuals with lower gait speed, worse performance in the 6-minute walk test, and lower handgrip strength may benefit from increasing their total energy expenditure to prevent potential issues related to low energy expenditure.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of diabetes duration on clinical and functional status in older adults with type 1 diabetes. The results showed that longer duration of diabetes was associated with higher likelihood of depression, hypoglycemia unawareness, lower exercise capacity, lower physical component summary, and greater daily medication use.

Summary: A population-based study in adults found the annual incidence of GBS-associated hospitalization to be 73 per 100,000 adults, with noninvasive GBS infections occurring 3.7 times more often than invasive infections. This suggests that the burden of GBS among adults is greater than previously recognized.
