Summary: Pressure ulcers are associated with multiple comorbidities and pose a significant risk of mortality, contributing to approximately 60,000 deaths per year in the US. A retrospective analysis of the US Renal Data System (USRDS) database revealed that pressure ulcer diagnosis is independently associated with mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The study also identified several comorbidities as potential risk factors for pressure ulcers in the ESRD population.

Summary: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) treatment options include kidney transplantation, dialysis, and palliative care. Prior to dialysis, optimal disease management is essential and initiation should be decided through shared decision-making. Vaccination, blood pressure control, salt restriction, and adequate dialysis are recommended for ESRD patients to optimize treatment outcomes.

Summary: This study retrospectively observed the incidence, clinical characteristics, admission trends, and outcomes of hypertensive crisis in end-stage kidney disease patients on maintenance dialysis. The study found that hospitalization rates for hypertensive crisis have increased during the past decade in these patients, but mortality and readmission rates have shown improvement.

Summary: The incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is higher in Israel than the European average. Socio-economic factors and ethnicity, particularly Arab ethnicity, are associated with an increased risk of ESRD, especially due to diabetes. Allocation of health resources and culturally appropriate interventions are necessary to improve control of modifiable risk factors for chronic renal failure.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to explore the relationship between physical functional performance and all-cause mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing dialysis. The results showed that poor physical functional performance was significantly associated with higher all-cause mortality in these patients.

This study aimed to clarify the effectiveness and long-term medical benefits of SDM in renal replacement therapy (RRT) for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The findings demonstrate the association between visiting an ESRD clinic, improved survival in ESRD patients, and the choice of different RRT modalities.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a severe public health problem that can lead to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis or transplantation. This study identified altered metabolites and biochemical reactions between ESRD and CKD, offering potential new biomarkers for monitoring CKD progression. Inhibition of the kynurenine pathway may be a promising target for delaying CKD progression, and metabolites with high discriminative ability could complement current markers to better indicate kidney damage status.

Summary: In France, IgAN is the most common glomerulonephritis related to ESRD, with patients being the youngest, having the fewest comorbidities, and using peritoneal dialysis the most frequently. Patients with IgAN have the best prognosis among primary and secondary GN, with those awaiting transplantation after dialysis seeming to have a more favorable prognosis compared to ADPKD patients. The reasons for the difference in treatment modalities between these two groups should be further investigated to improve survival rates in renal disease.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of understanding fatigue and accepting the treatment model for the acceptability and engagement with a cognitive-behavioural therapy-based intervention for fatigue. Overall, there is an indication that such an intervention is acceptable to patients and the mechanisms of change align with the proposed biopsychosocial model of fatigue. However, it needs to be delivered in a way that is appealing and practical to patients, while acknowledging the burdens of illness and treatment.

Summary: This study compared the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on two different targets for the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The results showed that stimulation of the left orbitofrontal cortex (L-OFC) had a greater effect and additional therapeutic effects compared to the supplementary motor area (SMA). The study concluded that tDCS is a feasible and acceptable treatment for OCD, with the L-OFC being the most promising target.

Summary: Patients with kidney failure undergoing maintenance dialysis often experience a high symptom burden that affects functioning and life satisfaction. The focus of nephrology care has traditionally been on laboratory targets and outcomes, with limited attention to symptom assessment and management. A conference was held in May 2022 to address the optimal means for diagnosing and managing symptom-based complications in dialysis patients, outlining foundational principles and identifying research priorities.

Summary: This study found that higher levels of optimism were associated with a reduced risk of stroke. Individuals with more conscientious and open personality types also had a lower risk of stroke. However, the strongest effect was seen for optimism, where optimistic individuals had a lower stroke risk regardless of their clinical risk or health behaviors. It is still unclear why optimism may help reduce the risk of stroke, but the study suggests that optimism may be related to higher levels of physical activity, which in turn helps reduce the risk of stroke. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between personality, health behaviors, and stroke risk reduction.
