Summary: This study found that the inductive effects of LPS on liver IL-6 mRNA expression were more pronounced under parenteral iron loading. Additionally, LPS treatment suppressed FPN1 mRNA expression in thalassemic mice with parenteral iron loading. Despite altered expression of hepcidin regulators, the hypoferremic response to LPS-induced acute inflammation was maintained in a hepcidin-independent manner.

Summary: The study reveals that hepatic iron accumulation may exacerbate symptoms related to metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. It suggests that iron depletion strategies in combination with anti-diabetic drugs could potentially improve insulin resistance and diabetic late complications.

Summary: Mutations in the HFE/Hfe gene cause Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH), characterized by iron deposition. HFE acts in hepatocytes and myeloid cells to regulate iron homeostasis. However, HFE actions in liver-resident macrophages seem to be dispensable for cellular, hepatic, and systemic iron regulation.

Summary: Liver macrophages play important roles in iron homeostasis and can be affected by aging and iron accumulation. This study found that iron administration in young rats mimicked age-related iron deposition but did not alter macrophage number or phenotype. Aging, on the other hand, increased both M1 and M2 macrophage numbers in the liver. These findings suggest that factors other than iron excess contribute to the accumulation of hepatic macrophages with aging.

Summary: Iron is crucial for biological processes and is mainly bound to hemoglobin in red blood cells. It is recycled from senescent cells by macrophages and regulated by hormones like hepcidin. Key proteins like DMT1 and FPN play crucial roles in iron uptake and transport.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term ethanol treatment on hepatic iron metabolism in mice, showing modest increases in hepatic iron without changes in hepcidin expression or oxidative stress markers, and no significant histologic liver injury. Further research is needed to characterize the mechanisms of dysregulated iron metabolism resulting from chronic ethanol ingestion.

Summary: This study investigates how iron affects inflammatory hepcidin levels and the subsequent hypoferremic response, revealing the antagonistic effect of iron on hepcidin induction and the critical role of de novo ferroportin synthesis in serum iron levels.

Summary: This study investigated the activities of key regulators affecting erythropoiesis in a rat model of iron deficiency anemia with inflammation. The results showed that IV iron therapy exacerbated inflammation and oxidative stress and did not resolve anemia.

Summary: Iron is essential for mammals but its homeostasis must be accurately regulated for proper physiological functioning. Hepcidin plays a crucial role in maintaining iron balance in the body, while inflammatory disorders can disrupt this balance. Therapeutic approaches targeting the hepcidin-FPN axis have been developed to address iron-related disorders.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic capabilities of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) T2* mapping in detecting incidental hepatic and cardiac iron overload. The study found that approximately 3.9% of patients had incidental hepatic iron overload and 1.1% of patients had incidental cardiac iron overload. The results suggest that T2* imaging can be used as a method for detecting iron overload and has implications for further patient management.

Summary: Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anemia, and assessing iron nutritional status requires consideration of various laboratory tests and indicators. Using multiple indicators in combination may be the best practice due to the influence of different factors on these indicators. Constant validation, improvement of assessment methods, and identification of new indicators are key to refining the assessment of iron nutritional status and selecting appropriate treatment for improvement.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the ERFE serum concentrations and its predictors in infants, and found that ERFE concentrations increase gradually during the first year of life in infants, but lack correlation to iron status and markers of erythropoiesis.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the performance of a 0.55 T MRI system for assessing patients with liver iron overload. Results showed significantly lower R2* values at 0.55 T, but the predictive model accurately predicted R2* values at 1.5 T based on measurements at 0.55 T for evaluating the degree of iron overload.

Summary: The health crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted dialysis patients in France, with a higher incidence and mortality rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection among them compared to the general population. Home dialysis has been shown to reduce the risk of infection, but its development in France faces obstacles such as pricing policies, lack of training, and limited information. Proposed initiatives aim to provide objective information, expand home dialysis networks, and increase prices for home dialysis procedures to improve the situation.

Summary: Anemia is a common complication of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). This study compared the effects of different intravenous iron therapies on liver iron accumulation in dialysis patients. It was found that third-generation intravenous irons (ferric carboxymaltose and iron isomaltoside) were more effective in minimizing iron overload and preserving liver structure compared to iron sucrose.
