Summary: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are associated with increased risk of osteoporotic fracture, possibly due to higher prevalence of hyperparathyroidism in PPI users taking calcium supplements. Monitoring PPI use in older adults is crucial.

Summary: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used antacid drugs that decrease acid secretion in the stomach. Recent studies have suggested that long-term use of PPIs may be associated with an increased risk of osteoporotic fractures, particularly in young patients. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of this bone fragility.

Summary: This study compared the risk of bone fractures between patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) treated with glucocorticoids who used proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs). The findings revealed that PPI users had a significantly higher risk of fractures compared to H2RA users.

Summary: PPIs alone may increase the risk of fracture in children and young adults, but the combination of PPIs and H2RAs or H2RAs alone do not show significant risks. Clinicians should be cautious when prescribing PPIs to patients.

Summary: Ellipticine and olivacine have cytotoxic effects on various cell lines, especially on doxorubicin-resistant cells. Olivacine is less cytotoxic to cancer cells and normal cells compared to ellipticine. Both compounds may exert their anticancer activity by affecting cell cycle progression and inducing apoptosis.

Summary: Despite being at higher risk, stroke survivors are less likely to receive bone mineral density testing and osteoporosis treatment compared to non-stroke patients. Factors such as female sex, osteoporosis, prior BMD testing, and low-trauma fractures after stroke increase the likelihood of receiving these measures, while greater stroke severity reduces the likelihood.

Summary: Among postmenopausal women, higher physical activity was associated with lower risk of incident urgency and mixed UI, but not stress UI, independent of baseline weight and weight change. Higher protein intake was associated with increased risk of urgency UI, but no associations were observed between other macronutrient and UI subtypes.

Summary: Biologic aging reflects the genetic, molecular, and cellular changes that occur with advancing age and contribute to decline in physical function and increased mortality. Developing reliable measures of biologic age is of growing interest to better understand the biology of aging and predict age-related outcomes. This paper presents workshop proceedings and summarizes the research needs, priorities, and recommendations for measuring biologic age.

Summary: Age is the greatest risk factor for lower urinary tract symptoms attributed to benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH). Mitochondrial dysfunction is potentially involved in the fibrosis and lower urinary tract dysfunction in aged mice. Oleic acid (OA) shows potential as a mitochondrial modulator for the treatment of LUTS/BPH.

Summary: The study explored the perceptions of older men with LUTS after using an mHealth app to track their symptoms and medication side effects. Most participants found the daily questionnaires to be at the right length, while those with more severe symptoms were less likely to report changes in perception of health or self-management. All men were willing to share app data with their clinicians, indicating potential for mHealth apps to monitor symptoms and improve care for older men with LUTS.
