Summary: Current surveillance recommendations for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) involve semiannual liver ultrasound, but this method's sensitivity is suboptimal for early-stage tumors, particularly in obese patients. MRI has shown excellent detection rates for liver lesions, but full contrast-enhanced MRI is not feasible due to limited availability and cost. Abbreviated MRI (AMRI) involves acquiring a limited number of sequences and has shown potential benefits of reduced acquisition time and improved cost-effectiveness compared to conventional MRI. However, caution should be exercised when interpreting published studies, as most were retrospective and focused on specific populations. Direct comparison studies and the development of tailored strategies based on HCC risk factors and AMRI availability are still needed.

Summary: This study confirmed a high risk of primary liver cancer in patients with acute hepatic porphyrias (AHP), particularly in those with clinical and biochemical activity of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP). Regular surveillance for primary liver cancer is recommended for patients older than 50 years with a history of active AIP.

Summary: The liver plays crucial functions in the human body, but it is susceptible to damage from various factors, leading to liver diseases such as primary liver cancer. Chemokines have been found to play a significant role in the development of liver cancer, making them useful in detecting and monitoring the disease.

Summary: The study found a positive association between traffic-related air pollution and lung cancer risk in racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations, mainly among African American and Latino American groups. Residents in low socioeconomic status neighborhoods had an increased risk of lung cancer associated with nitrogen oxides, while no association was observed among those in high socioeconomic status neighborhoods.

Summary: Black patients with HCV exposure develop HCC at earlier stages of liver disease with more aggressive tumor features. Nearly one-third of Black patients do not meet the common HCC screening criteria, suggesting a need to revise guidelines to be more inclusive. Further molecular studies are needed to characterize the biological properties of tumors in Black patients.

Summary: HCC is the most common form of primary liver cancer and the fastest rising cause of cancer-related death in the United States. It disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities in the country. A practical framework is needed to address the complex factors driving these disparities and guide future research initiatives towards health equity in HCC care.

Summary: This study provides worldwide, regional, and national estimates of the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). The results show that HCC contributes the largest burden of liver cancer globally, with the highest rates in Eastern Asia, Northern Africa, and Southeastern Asia. iCCA rates are highest in Southeastern Asia, Eastern Asia, Northern Europe, the Caribbean and Central America, and Oceania.

Summary: This study aimed to compare estimates of primary liver cancer mortality from the World Health Organization (WHO), Global Burden Disease (GBD), and Global Cancer Observatory (GCO). The study found that while the age-standardized rates (ASR) of primary liver cancer mortality were comparable across the three data sources, the most similar estimates were found between WHO and GCO. Concerns were raised about the true patterns of liver cancer mortality in certain countries due to opposite trends between WHO and GBD in some cases.

Summary: There is a wide variation in recall patterns for patients with subcentimeter liver lesions on ultrasound. The low risk of primary liver cancer (PLC) in these patients supports short-interval ultrasound follow-up in 3-6 months, but high-risk subgroups may require diagnostic CT/MRI.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the inequity and healthcare quality regarding colorectal cancer (CRC) by sex and location using a comprehensive measure called the quality of care index (QCI). The study found heterogeneity in QCI between socio-demographic index (SDI) quintiles and highlighted the importance of paying attention to individuals aged over 75 years due to lower quality of care in this age group.
