Summary: Purinergic signaling plays a significant role in depression, with studies suggesting altered adenosine metabolism in depressed patients may serve as a disease biomarker. Research also indicates that manipulation of P1 or P2 receptors, along with selective or nonselective ligands, can impact the development and progression of depression.

Summary: With university admission, there are major changes in students' daily habits that can lead to mental health problems. Adherence to a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, can be very beneficial for mental health. This study found that poor adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with depressive symptoms among Spanish nursing students, highlighting the importance of prevention programs focused on health and mental health issues in universities.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between depressive and anxiety symptoms with suicidality among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic using network analysis. The findings suggest that reducing specific depressive and anxiety symptoms, such as excessive worry, may help reduce suicidality among adolescents.

Summary: This study explores the potential mediating effects of anxiety symptoms and hopelessness on the relationship between academic stress and depressive symptoms among Chinese college students. The results indicate that anxiety symptoms and hopelessness can partly explain the relationship between academic stress and depressive symptoms. Therefore, attention should be paid to the anxiety and hopelessness levels of college students with high academic pressure to promote mental health.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the association between postpartum depression (PPD) and the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a significantly higher prevalence and odds of PPD in those who suffered from the pandemic. The study also found that China had a lower prevalence of postpartum depression compared to other countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: The study examined the role of sleep thoughts and behaviors as mediators of the association between social rhythms and mental health symptoms of depression and anxiety in a sample of 3,284 adults. The results showed that greater social rhythmicity is directly associated with fewer depressive and anxiety symptoms, and that healthier sleep behaviors and thoughts mediate this association. The findings highlight the critical role lifestyle regularity plays in depressive and anxious symptom pathology, with sleep behaviors and thoughts playing complementary roles in the link between regularity and mental health.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a global impact, leading to reduced levels of happiness. The response of individuals with pre-existing mental health concerns to the pandemic remains unclear. Through two studies using cross-sectional (study 1; N = 1,366) and longitudinal (study 2; N = 262) data, we examined the mental health symptoms and happiness levels of older adults before and after the pandemic declaration. The results showed that higher levels of depression and anxiety symptoms predicted lower levels of happiness. However, individuals with higher levels of mental health symptoms reported higher happiness levels post-pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels. These findings suggest that resilience can be learned throughout a lifetime and that experiences from prior stressors may benefit individuals in responding to future ones, even among vulnerable populations.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between mental health literacy (MHL) and depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and suicidal ideation among college students. Depressive and anxiety symptoms partially mediated the relationship between MHL and suicidal ideation, with depressive symptoms having a greater mediating effect than anxiety symptoms.

Summary: The activation of the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) by elevated levels of extracellular ATP (eATP) in the brain is associated with neuroinflammation, which plays a role in depression. Therefore, targeting P2X7R has become an attractive approach for developing novel antidepressant agents. Several CNS-penetrating P2RX7 antagonists have been developed by multinational pharmaceutical companies and evaluated in clinical trials. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of P2X7R antagonists for depression treatment.

Summary: There is growing evidence that physical activity is negatively associated with depression and anxiety in adolescents. This study investigated the associations between sports participation and depression and anxiety among Chinese adolescents. The results showed that adolescents with less participation in sport-related activities were more likely to report depressive symptoms and anxiety disorders.
