The Eurocat registry Northern Netherlands (NNL) has been used in regional context, as well as in national/international context, to describe the epidemiology of oral clefts (OC). However, the region NNL seems to have prevalence data different fromDutch national registries and certain other European areas. Thismay be due to differences in registration methods or geographical variation. To investigate whether the prevalence of OC live births varies regionally in the Netherlands, we established time trends for NNL and the rest of the Netherlands over 1997-2007 using data from two national registries (the OC Registry and The Netherlands Perinatal Registry) and a regional registry (Eurocat NNL). We found that the overall live-birth prevalence-comprising cleft lip/alveolus +/- cleft palate and cleft palate only-was significantly higher in NNL (15.1-21.4 per 10,000) than in the rest of the Netherlands (13.2-16.1 per 10,000). None of the registries showed significant trends for NNL, whereas both national registries showed that the live-birth prevalence of cleft lip/alveolus +/- cleft palate decreased significantly in the rest of the Netherlands. Despite some differences in prevalence between the registries, they showed similar regional variation in prevalence and trends. In conclusion, the prevalence of OC live births varies significantly in the Netherlands, not only between but also within registries. This underlines that extrapolation of regional cleft data should be done with caution. To further investigate OC etiology and evaluate preventive strategies, future studies should consider geographical differencesbetween and within countries-regarding the various cleft sub-phenotypes among live births, stillbirths, and pregnancy terminations. Evaluation of dental maturity in Muenke syndrome, Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, and TCF12-related craniosynostosis

Tsun M. Choi, Gem J. C. Kramer, Jacqueline A. C. Goos, Irene M. J. Mathijssen, Eppo B. Wolvius, Edwin M. Ongkosuwito

Summary: The study revealed that dental development was delayed by one year in patients with Muenke syndrome and Saethre-Chotzen syndrome compared to children without syndromes in the control group. These findings can help orthodontists determine whether growth disturbances related to dental development need to be considered.

Treatment Outcome in Bilateral Cleft lip and Palate Patients Evaluated With the Huddart-Bodenham Scoring System and the Bilateral Cleft lip and Palate Yardstick: A Systematic Review

Wenying Kuang, Miranda Aarts, Anne Marie Kuijpers-Jagtman, Hong He, Edwin M. Ongkosuwito

Summary: The study assessed treatment outcomes for complete bilateral cleft lip and palate patients and found that most treatment centers had good results, but with moderate to high risk of bias and very low quality of evidence. Future clinical research should focus on methodological designs to improve treatment outcomes for BCLP patients.

Summary: This study investigated the commonly used classification systems by cleft providers worldwide and their perceived indications and limitations. The results showed a great variety in the use of classification systems among craniofacial specialists, and recommended the usage of the LAHSHAL classification system due to its comprehensiveness and potential to overcome deficiencies in other systems.

Summary: This study found that patients with Muenke syndrome, Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, and TCF12-related craniosynostosis have hypoplastic midfaces compared to a Dutch control group. Additionally, the maxillary rotation and craniofacial buildup are significantly different in these three craniosynostosis syndromes compared to controls.

Clarity and consistency in stillbirth reporting in Europe: why is it so hard to get this right?

Summary: Routine stillbirth data in European countries are not comparable and should not be used for benchmarking or surveillance without careful verification. Recommendations for improvement include using gestational age as a cut-off, excluding late terminations of pregnancy, and linking multiple sources to improve the quality of national databases.

Prenatal Exposure to Mercury, Manganese, and Lead and Adverse Birth Outcomes in Suriname: A Population-Based Birth Cohort Study

Vinoj H. Sewberath Misser, Ashna D. Hindori-Mohangoo, Arti Shankar, Jeffrey K. Wickliffe, Maureen Y. Lichtveld, Dennis R. A. Mans

Summary: Globally, prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants such as mercury, manganese, and lead is increasingly linked to adverse birth outcomes. This study in Suriname found no statistically significant relationship between blood levels of mercury, manganese, or lead and stillbirth, preterm birth, low birth weight, and low Apgar score. However, diabetes mellitus was independently associated with preterm birth and hypertension with low birth weight.

HOW PRO?S CAN CONTRIBUTE TO WHAT MATTERS MOST TO PATIENTS WITH OROFACIAL CLEFTS

Edwin M. Ongkosuwito, Mette A. R. Kuijpers

Summary: An orofacial cleft (OC) is a congenital cleft that affects the lip, alveolus, hard and soft palate, causing physical and functional problems. Patient reported Outcome (PRO) and experience (PRE) measures are important to improve care for OC patients. The current framework for OC assessment should include social network support and focus on enhancing experiences. Combining traditional indicators with PROMs can provide better understanding and enable shared decision making for OC patients, empowering them.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prenatal exposure to perceived stress, probable depression, and lead on toddlers' neurodevelopment. The results showed that prenatal lead exposure was associated with lower communication scores, while maternal probable depression was associated with lower motor scores. However, prenatal stress was not found to have an impact. Furthermore, the combined exposure to stress, depression, and lead was found to predict fine motor scores in toddlers.

Contrasting mercury contamination scenarios and site susceptibilities confound fish mercury burdens in Suriname, South America

Arioene Vreedzaam, Paul Ouboter, Ashna D. Hindori-Mohangoo, Ryan Lepak, Samantha Rumschlag, Sarah Janssen, Gwen Landburg, Arti Shankar, Wilco Zijlmans, Maureen Y. Lichtveld, Jeffrey K. Wickliffe

Summary: In Suriname, the use of mercury has increased due to gold mining, putting fish-reliant communities, such as Indigenous and Tribal communities, at risk of higher mercury exposure. However, the study found no significant increase in fish mercury levels over time or based on proximity to gold mining sites. Instead, remote unmined sites were found to be more susceptible to gaseous elemental mercury deposition, leading to increased contamination risk. This highlights the potential impact of mercury releases from gold mining on fish-reliant communities far away from the mining sites.

Oral health-related quality of life in patients with oligodontia: A FACE-Q assessment

M. Aarts, S. Mettenberger, E. M. Bronkhorst, E. M. Ongkosuwito

Summary: This study investigated the impact of oligodontia on appearance and on the functional and psychosocial aspects of oral health-related quality of life (OHrQoL) in patients aged 8-29 years. It was found that patients with oligodontia scored lower in the domain of 'eating and drinking' and that the number of congenitally missing teeth, age, and gender had significant effects on OHrQoL.
