Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of tooth agenesis, tooth malformation, and eruption patterns of upper canines/first premolars in Taiwanese children. The results suggest a strong correlation between the patterns of dental anomalies and the cleft sites in cleft lip and cleft palate patients.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of dental anomalies (DA) between patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and a control group, finding a higher prevalence of DAs in CLP patients, especially for anomalies outside the cleft. The results suggest that environmental factors play a major role in the high prevalence of DAs in CLP subjects.

Summary: This article emphasizes the benefits of a multidisciplinary team approach in the systemic management of patients with cleft lip and cleft palate, and suggests the addition of a registered dietitian to the care team. An ideal cleft palate care team should focus on a comprehensive, collaborative, and family-centered approach. While care teams may vary depending on context and location, there are still some key principles.

Summary: This study utilized an expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) dataset to identify multiple associations with the risk of non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P). Functional annotation analysis showed that these risk loci were significantly enriched in transcription regulation and chromatin open regions on the genome. Additionally, these susceptible genes were closely related to cell fate determination, the pluripotency of stem cells, and Wnt signaling pathways.

Summary: Orofacial clefting is a common birth defect worldwide, presenting as cleft lip only, isolated cleft palate or cleft lip and palate. It has a diverse genetic background influenced by gene-gene and gene-environment interaction, resulting in syndromic and nonsyndromic orofacial clefts. Orofacial clefts cause significant physiological difficulties, impacting feeding, speech and language development, and other developmental aspects, leading to increased social and financial burden. The management of orofacial clefts requires a multidisciplinary team approach.

Summary: Cleft lip and palate is a common congenital birth defect with varied causes. Recent studies suggest that non-coding RNAs, specifically microRNAs, may play a role in the development of cleft lip and palate. This review examines the potential of microRNAs as causative mechanisms in humans and mice.

Summary: Pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants in the CDH1 gene are associated with increased risk of gastric and breast cancers, as well as hereditary cleft lip and palate (CLP). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CLP in families with these variants. The results showed a high prevalence of CLP in families carrying CDH1 variants, with no clear genotype-phenotype pattern. Genetic testing for CDH1 should be considered in families with CLP and a history of gastric or lobular breast cancer.

Summary: By modifying patients' postoperative photographs, the study found that lip angle has a smaller impact on appearance ratings compared to scar severity. Although families are more concerned about scarring, clinically, the angle of the cleft lip repair is more likely to influence the perception of the surgical result.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the overall prevalence of cleft palate, lip, and cleft lip and palate. The findings revealed a high prevalence of these oral clefts among infants. Health system policymakers need to implement measures to reduce the number of patients and mitigate the impact on children through preventive and therapeutic measures.

Summary: Globally, prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants such as mercury, manganese, and lead is increasingly linked to adverse birth outcomes. This study in Suriname found no statistically significant relationship between blood levels of mercury, manganese, or lead and stillbirth, preterm birth, low birth weight, and low Apgar score. However, diabetes mellitus was independently associated with preterm birth and hypertension with low birth weight.

Summary: An orofacial cleft (OC) is a congenital cleft that affects the lip, alveolus, hard and soft palate, causing physical and functional problems. Patient reported Outcome (PRO) and experience (PRE) measures are important to improve care for OC patients. The current framework for OC assessment should include social network support and focus on enhancing experiences. Combining traditional indicators with PROMs can provide better understanding and enable shared decision making for OC patients, empowering them.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prenatal exposure to perceived stress, probable depression, and lead on toddlers' neurodevelopment. The results showed that prenatal lead exposure was associated with lower communication scores, while maternal probable depression was associated with lower motor scores. However, prenatal stress was not found to have an impact. Furthermore, the combined exposure to stress, depression, and lead was found to predict fine motor scores in toddlers.

Summary: In Suriname, the use of mercury has increased due to gold mining, putting fish-reliant communities, such as Indigenous and Tribal communities, at risk of higher mercury exposure. However, the study found no significant increase in fish mercury levels over time or based on proximity to gold mining sites. Instead, remote unmined sites were found to be more susceptible to gaseous elemental mercury deposition, leading to increased contamination risk. This highlights the potential impact of mercury releases from gold mining on fish-reliant communities far away from the mining sites.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of oligodontia on appearance and on the functional and psychosocial aspects of oral health-related quality of life (OHrQoL) in patients aged 8-29 years. It was found that patients with oligodontia scored lower in the domain of 'eating and drinking' and that the number of congenitally missing teeth, age, and gender had significant effects on OHrQoL.
