Summary: This study found that pregnancy complications are associated with a higher risk of heart disease later in life for women of different ethnic backgrounds. However, these complications do not significantly improve the prediction of prevalent cardiovascular disease risk factors when added to traditional eligibility criteria for screening.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance and limitations of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for multiple blood pressure phenotypes in diverse population groups. The authors compare different methods to construct PRSs, including clumping-and-thresholding (PRSice2) and LD-based (LDPred2) approaches. They find that PRS-CSx, a weighted sum of PRSs developed from multiple independent GWAS, performs best across all race/ethnic backgrounds. Stratified analysis shows that PRSs are more predictive of blood pressure in females, individuals without obesity, and middle-aged individuals.

Summary: Metabolic acidosis is associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and mortality. The incidence of metabolic acidosis is higher in Asian, Black, and Hispanic individuals, but residing in higher education zip codes mitigates this risk. Metabolic acidosis is independently associated with adverse outcomes in CKD patients across all racial/ethnic groups.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease have a higher risk of both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, partly independent from established risk factors. This review discusses the impact of kidney disease on stroke risk and consequences, as well as the underlying mechanisms.

Summary: Controlling blood pressure is crucial for curbing kidney function decline and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Ten metabolites that have significant associations with blood pressure were identified, and their quantitative importance was verified.

Summary: Sex and gender are often used interchangeably, but gender is a more fluid and dynamic concept that encompasses psychosocial and cultural aspects. Inequality in medicine, particularly gender inequality, has been overlooked for a long time and is now a pressing concern. This study investigates gender equality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and highlights disparities in access to different treatment modalities.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common and increasing clinical disease that affects 10 to 15% of the world's population. Hypertension is the most common and modifiable risk factor for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in CKD patients. The control rate of hypertension is low in both developed and developing countries, and CKD is not only a common cause of uncontrolled hypertension but also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nocturnal hypertension on the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children. The study found that children with both daytime and nocturnal hypertension had the highest risk of kidney replacement therapy. The study confirmed the utility of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in children with CKD. Identifying and controlling both daytime and nocturnal hypertension using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring may improve outcomes and delay CKD progression in this population.

Summary: In a large chronic kidney disease cohort, plasma serotonin levels correlated with blood pressure, and elevated serotonin levels were associated with left ventricular hypertrophy. In contrast, undetectable plasma serotonin was associated with the highest risk of heart failure and ASCVD events.

Summary: Hypertension is common and poorly controlled in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Accurate BP measurement is crucial. Dietary sodium restriction and the use of renin-angiotensin system blockers are recommended. Thiazide-like diuretic chlorthalidone is effective in patients with stage 4 CKD and uncontrolled hypertension.

Summary: Microstructural features such as low nephron number for age and larger glomeruli were found to be important predictors for long-term risk of chronic kidney disease after living kidney donation. Incident hypertension, on the other hand, was not predicted by any microstructural features in the study.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the area deprivation index (ADI) and the utilization of telemedicine in primary care. The results showed that patients residing in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods were more likely to use phone visits for telemedicine, rather than video visits. This highlights the existing health disparities and the need for patient-level interventions to achieve equitable access to digital healthcare, particularly for low-income individuals.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of a telehealth intervention using SMS text messages to monitor COVID-19 symptoms among patients receiving treatment for opioid use disorder. The majority of patients chose to communicate with care managers through SMS text messages, and no patients were referred for acute care services or hospitalized during the observation period.
