Summary: Enterovirus infections may contribute to the development of celiac disease, especially before the appearance of celiac disease-related autoantibodies. Adenovirus infections do not seem to have a significant association with the development of celiac disease.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk of cardiac birth defects in infants born to mothers with celiac disease (CeD). The results showed no statistically significant association between maternal CeD and the risk of any or cardiac birth defects in the offspring, compared to the general population and non-affected siblings.

Summary: Research suggests that maternal exposure to natural environments, especially green spaces, is associated with healthy fetal growth. However, there is limited research on the effects of blue spaces. This study evaluated the associations between maternal exposure to natural environments and birth outcomes in nine European countries. The findings indicate that residential proximity to green spaces is linked to increased birth weight and reduced risk of small for gestational age (SGA). However, there is little association between accessibility to green spaces or exposure to blue spaces and birth outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of promoting natural environments, especially in deprived areas.

Summary: This study found that infants born by planned caesarean section have a slightly higher risk of severe lower respiratory tract infections during infancy compared to those born vaginally. Infants born by any type of caesarean section may also have a small increased risk of severe upper respiratory tract infections. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant invasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections in the United States is predominantly due to the expansion of several emm types. Infections with resistance to erythromycin and clindamycin are most common among individuals aged 18-34 and those residing in long-term care facilities, experiencing homelessness, being incarcerated, or injecting drugs.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between pregnancy and birth-related factors and the risk of celiac disease (CD) in a large US mother-child cohort. The results showed that being born by Caesarean delivery without labor was associated with a higher risk of CD, while infants born by Caesarean delivery with labor did not show a significant association.

Summary: Perinatal antibiotic exposure had a significant impact on the gut microbiota of 1-year-old infants, with a greater effect than exposure to later courses of antibiotics. The composition of the gut microbiota was found to be influenced by the timing of antibiotic exposure.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence of celiac disease autoimmunity (CDA) and its associations with latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (LMTB) and Helicobacter pylori (HP) infections in Ethiopian children. The results showed that the incidence of CDA in Ethiopian children is lower than the global average incidence. Neither LMTB nor HP infections are associated with CD in Ethiopian children.

Summary: This study, based on 2453 mother-child pairs, found associations between specific antibiotic exposure during pregnancy and an increased risk of current asthma and eczema in children at 4 years old. Gender did not affect these associations. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore potential mechanisms.

Summary: Celiac disease is a chronic enteropathy caused by gluten ingestion in genetically susceptible individuals. The only recommended treatment is a gluten-free diet, but unintentional gluten ingestion or refractory celiac disease with persistent villous atrophy poses a major challenge. This review analyzed data from randomized controlled trials and observational studies to evaluate adjunctive and novel therapies for CD and RCD. Although a gluten-free diet remains the only effective treatment, steroids, mesalamine, and biological therapies have shown promise in managing RCD.

Summary: The abuse of antibiotics in animal husbandry and the subsequent passive exposure to residual antibiotics through food consumption has resulted in significant public health concerns. This study aimed to investigate the potential adverse effects of prenatal antibiotics exposure on fetal growth and development. The findings suggest that prenatal exposure to certain antibiotics may negatively impact fetal growth indicators.

Summary: A gluten-free diet is essential for treating celiac disease and may improve symptoms in non-celiac gluten/wheat sensitivity. However, adopting a gluten-free diet or a gluten-restricted diet may increase the risk of malnutrition and nutrient deficiencies. Therefore, patients with these conditions should undergo nutritional assessment and monitoring, and receive multidisciplinary care for long-term nutrition management.

Summary: This study analyzed atmospheric PM samples to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and human seasonal coronavirus 229E. The results showed a relatively high positivity rate of SARS-CoV-2 in PM samples collected at different sites in the Venice area. These findings suggest that outdoor PM analysis could be a promising tool for environmental surveillance.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the seroprevalence of varicella in Italy and evaluate the impact of varicella vaccination. The overall seroprevalence was 91.6% with higher rates in females and increasing prevalence in younger age groups. The comparison with previous surveys showed significantly higher prevalence in children and adolescents, indicating the positive impact of varicella vaccination in Italy.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the degree of underreporting of pertussis in Italy. The frequency of pertussis infections estimated using seroprevalence data was compared with the reported pertussis incidence among the Italian population. The study found that the estimated rate of pertussis infections based on seroprevalence was significantly higher than the reported incidence in different age groups.
