Summary: This study found an association between the use of antibiotics and increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, but no dose-response effect was observed. Further epidemiological studies with information on early life and lifestyle factors are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study assessed modifiable risk factors associated with COVID-19 in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). The results showed that higher vitamin D levels and active smoking status were associated with a lower risk of COVID-19, while external contact and working in the healthcare sector increased the risk. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation and teleworking may help prevent infection risk in PwMS.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of restless leg syndrome (RLS) among patients with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) and its association with MS disease duration, sleep disturbance, and daytime fatigue. The prevalence of RLS in pwMS was significantly higher compared to the control group. Patients with RLS had a higher risk of fatigue and worse sleep quality.

Summary: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex disease involving genetic variants and environmental factors, including obesity, vitamin D deficiency, Epstein-Barr virus infection, and smoking. Leveraging genetics through the Mendelian randomization paradigm helps inform prevention strategies for MS by studying the impact of environmental factors on susceptibility. This approach draws parallels with observational studies and randomized controlled trials, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for future research in this area.

Summary: Anti-NMDAR encephalitis is an autoimmune disease characterized by neuropsychiatric symptoms and the presence of antibodies against the GluN1 subunit of the NMDAR. This report describes a male patient in China who developed multiple sclerosis (MS) in addition to anti-NMDAR encephalitis. The use of mycophenolate mofetil as an immunosuppressive therapy is also discussed as a potential treatment for overlapping anti-NMDAR encephalitis and MS.

Summary: This study found that shared breastfeeding and older age of first joining school were associated with decreased risk of MS, while longer duration of breastfeeding by biological mother, lower rank among siblings, and larger number of household members at birth were associated with increased risk. Additionally, MS patients were less likely to receive formula with breastfeeding.

Summary: This study aimed to assess cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and found that MS patients have a higher risk compared to healthy controls. There were significant differences in cardiovascular metabolic indexes between MS patients and controls, emphasizing the importance of managing lipid markers for controlling CVD risk in individuals with MS.

Summary: This paper introduces a flexible inference procedure that integrates individual-level data collected from internal studies with summary data borrowed from external studies, addressing the challenges of sharing individual data among studies. The procedure is built on a retrospective empirical likelihood framework, able to be applied to external studies in different populations and showing efficiency advantages over other methods both theoretically and numerically.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the applicability of bacterial lux biosensors for genotoxicological studies. The genotoxicity of 47 chemical compounds was tested using biosensors, which showed a complete coincidence of results with the mutagenic activity of these drugs from the Ames test for 42 substances. The study also revealed the enhancing effect of deuterium (D2O) on genotoxicity and the modifying effect of antioxidants and radioprotectors on the genotoxic effects of chemical agents.

Summary: Fear of movement or kinesiophobia is an irrational fear of physical movement and fatigue that causes a limitation of functional capacity and decreased physical activity. This study aimed to assess the level of kinesiophobia in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) and compare it with a group of healthy people. The findings suggest that kinesiophobia is higher in pwMS than in the healthy control group.

Summary: This study found an association between childhood cancer and birth defects, with a stronger association observed among females. However, birth defects did not fully explain the differences in childhood cancer risk by sex, suggesting the involvement of other biological pathways.

Summary: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) mainly affects young to middle-aged women. The prognosis of patients with CVT varies according to their age and sex. CVT patients have an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) at other sites, ischemic stroke, major bleeding, and mortality. The risks differ between age groups and sexes.

Summary: This study used Danish national registries to examine the impact of migraine on the risk of premature myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke among men and women. They found that migraine was associated with similarly increased risk of premature ischemic stroke among both men and women, but there may be an increased risk of MI and hemorrhagic stroke only among women.

Summary: Pulmonary embolism as a risk factor for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and its impact on long-term mortality after venous thromboembolism (VTE) were examined. A nationwide cohort study of Danish patients without previous pulmonary hypertension (PH) was conducted, and the standardized mortality rate ratios (SMRs) were calculated. The results showed that PH diagnosed less than 2 years after incident VTE was associated with a twofold increased long-term mortality, mainly driven by cardiovascular causes.
