Background: Epidemiologic studies are inconsistent regarding the association between tea consumption and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Objective: The objective was to perform a meta-analysis to determine whether an association exists between tea consumption and total CAD endpoints in observational studies. Design: We searched PUBMED and EMBASE databases for studies conducted from 1966 through November 2009. Study-specific risk estimates were combined by using a random-effects model. Results: A total of 18 studies were included in the meta-analysis: 13 studies on black tea and 5 studies on green tea. For black tea, no significant association was found through the meta-analysis [ highest compared with lowest, summary relative risk (RR): 0.92; 95% CI: 0.82, 1.04; an increment of 1 cup/d, summary RR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.94, 1.02]. For green tea, the summary RR indicated a significant association between the highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of CAD (summary RR: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.58, 0.89). Furthermore, an increase in green tea consumption of 1 cup/d was associated with a 10% decrease in the risk of developing CAD (summary RR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.82, 0.99). Conclusions: Our data do not support a protective role of black tea against CAD. The limited data available on green tea support a tentative association of green tea consumption with a reduced risk of CAD. However, additional studies are needed to make a convincing case for this association. Am J Clin Nutr 2011;93:506-15.

Long noncoding RNA H19 suppresses cardiac hypertrophy through the MicroRNA-145-3p/SMAD4 axis

Hao Wang, Xiaoqing Lian, Wei Gao, Jie Gu, Haojie Shi, Yao Ma, Yafei Li, Yi Fan, Qiming Wang, Liansheng Wang

Summary: In this study, it was found that the long noncoding RNA H19 acts as a negative regulator in the progression of cardiac hypertrophy (CH). H19 regulates SMAD4 by sponging miR-145-3p, leading to a decrease in heart size and weight and improvement in cardiac function.

Serum Retinol Binding Protein 4 as a Potential Biomarker for Sarcopenia in Older Adults

Chen-Lu Chang, Yan-Ru Li, Zhi-Yue Wang, Mei-Lin Li, Kai-Yue Jia, Hui-Xian Sun, Quan Wang, Can Zhao, Xiang Lu, Wei Gao

Summary: This study evaluated the association between serum RBP4 level and sarcopenia in older adults. The results showed a positive correlation between serum RBP4 level and the risk and severity of sarcopenia, indicating its potential as a biomarker for screening and evaluation of sarcopenia.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors for constipation in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients. The study found that the prevalence of constipation was higher in PD patients compared to HD patients, and PD modality, age >= 65, and diabetic kidney disease were closely associated with constipation in dialysis patients.

Retinol-Binding Protein 4 Actives Adipocyte Renin-Angiotensin System via Toll-Like Receptor 4

Kang-Zhen Zhang, Xiu-Zhen Li, Li Wang, Xi-Yu Shen, Shu-Shu Zhu, Xiang Lu, Wei Gao

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between serum adipokine retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) levels and essential hypertension, as well as the role and mechanism of RBP4-induced activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in adipocytes. The results showed that serum RBP4 levels were significantly higher in hypertensive patients compared to nonhypertensive subjects. The study also found that RBP4 can affect blood pressure through TLR4-mediated activation of the RAS. These findings contribute to a better understanding and potential treatment of hypertension.

Severe thrombocytopenia induced by tirofiban after percutaneous coronary intervention: a case report

Ze-Mu Wang, Bin Wang, Ya-Fei Li, Bei Chen, Qin Shen, Dian-Fu Li, Lian-Sheng Wang

Summary: Clinicians should be aware of the potential for severe thrombocytopenia when using tirofiban as it is widely used in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. This case report describes a 76-year-old Chinese man who developed severe thrombocytopenia after receiving tirofiban during percutaneous coronary intervention. Immediate discontinuation of all antiplatelet drugs and treatment with platelet transfusions and immunoglobulin G led to a significant improvement in platelet count.

Association between urinary cadmium level and subclinical myocardial injury in the general population without cardiovascular disease aged ≥ 50 years

Yu-Jie Wu, Si-Bo Wang, Jia-Teng Sun, Ling-Feng Gu, Ze-Mu Wang, Bo Deng, Hao Wang, Lian-Sheng Wang

Summary: This study examined the relationship between urinary cadmium (U-Cd) and subclinical myocardial injury (SC-MI) in older people without cardiovascular disease (CVD). The results showed a significant association between U-Cd and cardiac infarction/injury score (CIIS) and a higher likelihood of SC-MI in the highest quartile of U-Cd. This suggests that U-Cd may be a novel risk factor for SC-MI.
