Summary: Recent studies have questioned the safety of using acetaminophen for pain relief and fever reduction in patients with cardiovascular disease and those taking anticoagulants. The studies suggest that acetaminophen, like most nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can increase blood pressure and formulations containing sodium can increase cardiovascular risk. The influence of acetaminophen on coagulation through its effects on vitamin K metabolism is also discussed.

Summary: According to a post-hoc analysis from the ORCHID trial, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in hospitalized American adult COVID-19 patients is not associated with worse clinical outcomes, including 28-day mortality or hospital discharge. Furthermore, a meta-analysis of 14 studies involving 48,788 COVID-19 patients showed that NSAID use had a survival benefit and decreased the risk of severe COVID-19.

Summary: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, pain, and fever. This review explores the antifungal effects of NSAIDs alone or in combination with antifungal drugs in vitro and in vivo. Studies have shown that NSAIDs have antifungal activities against various species of fungi, including inhibiting biofilm formation and yeast-to-hypha conversion. Modulating prostaglandin E2 levels during fungal infection may be a possible mechanism. The combination therapy of NSAIDs and antifungal drugs shows potential as a novel therapeutic strategy in clinical studies, reducing resistance and toxicity.

Summary: This study found that meloxicam did not limit the inflammatory response in the mammary gland and did not impair the mammary immune system. Interestingly, intramammary meloxicam appeared to stimulate leukocyte recruitment into the milk in quarters challenged with a low dose of LPS.

Summary: In this study, a water-stable Zr-based porphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF), PCN-224, was used for the targeted adsorption of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The results showed high removal efficiencies for NPX and IBP, but lower efficiency for SMX. The strong interaction between the carboxylic acid functional groups in drugs and the open metal sites of PCN-224 was found to be responsible for the high adsorption capacity.

Summary: This article provides a critical review of the plant uptake, translocation, and toxic effects of pharmaceuticals in contaminated environments, including the presence of metabolites of these drugs in plants. The use of constructed wetlands with plants for remediation is also discussed. Factors influencing the plant uptake and translocation of pharmaceuticals are examined, and future research directions are suggested.

Summary: A facile method for converting carboxylate-containing indomethacin into a cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitor via the amidation of an unnatural peptide sequence is reported. The resulting indomethacin amides have high selectivity for COX-2 and can self-assemble into a supramolecular hydrogel for boosting anti-inflammatory efficacy.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the GRACE risk score in acute pulmonary embolism (PE) patients for 30-day mortality and the need for thrombolytic treatment. The study found that the GRACE risk score, along with the PESI score, were independent risk factors associated with 30-day mortality and the need for thrombolytic treatment. The GRACE risk score showed high sensitivity and specificity in predicting mortality, and its combination with the PESI score helped define high-risk PE patients and predict poor prognosis.

Summary: Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is commonly used to evaluate isolated tricuspid regurgitation (TR), but there is limited research comparing its quantification with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, a novel TTE algorithm was developed to identify severe TR based on TTE parameters. The algorithm had a higher accuracy than the current guidelines' criteria in detecting severe TR by MRI.

Situs inversus is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by the inverted position of chest and abdominal organs. Cardiac catheterization is uncommon in patients with this particular abnormality, highlighting the importance of customizing techniques to engage coronary arteries and optimize guide support for percutaneous coronary intervention if needed.

Summary: This study evaluated the angiogenic capacity of adipose tissue in patients undergoing cardiac surgeries and found that patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) had reduced angiogenic capacity in their pericardial adipose tissue. Gene expression analysis revealed upregulated expression of the anti-angiogenic gene TSP-1 in CAD patients, with no significant differences in other angiogenic factors. Additionally, inhibiting TSP-1 expression significantly improved angiogenic deficiency in CAD patients.

Summary: The current guidelines recommend prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) for patients with symptomatic heart failure (HF) and low left ventricular ejection fraction. However, not all patients will benefit from ICD treatment. This study evaluated the feasibility of using the MADIT-II-based Risk Stratification Score (MRSS) to predict the survival benefit of prophylactic ICDs in patients with HF. The results showed that different risk subgroups had varying levels of ICD survival benefit.
