Premise of the study: The European Alps harbor a spatially heterogeneous environment. Plants can be adapted genetically to this heterogeneity but may also respond to it by phenotypic plasticity. We expected the important fodder grass Poa alpina to be adapted to elevation either genetically or plastically. Methods: We investigated in three elevational common gardens whether growth and reproductive allocation of plants reproducing either by seeds or bulbils suggest adaptation to their elevation of origin and to what extent they can respond plastically to different elevations. Additionally, we analyzed genetic diversity using microsatellites and tested whether seeds are of sexual origin. Key results: In the field, bulbil-producing plants occurred more often at higher elevations, whereas seed-producing plants occurred more often at lower elevations, but bulbil-producing plants were generally less vigorous in the common gardens. The response of plants to elevational transplantation was highly plastic, and vigor was always best at the highest location. The small genetic differences were not clinally related to elevation of origin, underlining the importance of phenotypic plasticity. Reproductive allocation was, however, independent of elevational treatments. Seed-producing plants had higher genetic diversity than the bulbil-producing plants even though we found that seed-producing plants were facultative apomicts mostly reproducing asexually. Conclusions: Bulbil-producing P. alpina, showing a fitness cost at lower elevations compared with seed-producing plants, seem better adapted to higher elevations. By means of its two reproductive modes and the capacity to adjust plastically, P. alpina is able to occupy a broad ecological niche across a large elevational range.

Spring understory herbs flower later in intensively managed forests

Evolution of plant drought strategies and herbivore tolerance after two decades of climate change

Summary: Ongoing global warming and increased drought frequencies may have led to complex evolutionary adaptation in plant populations. A glasshouse experiment comparing ancestors raised from stored seeds with contemporary descendants revealed that three out of four studied species had shorter life cycles and increased drought tolerance. Comparison of genetic differentiation values suggested that directional selection was underlying some of the observed phenotypic changes. Overall, this study provides evidence of recent evolutionary changes in plant populations that are consistent with adaptation to drought and herbivory.

Forest wildflowers bloom earlier as Europe warms: lessons from herbaria and spatial modelling

Summary: Today, plants often flower earlier due to climate warming. Studying over 6000 herbarium specimens of 20 spring-flowering forest understory herbs from Europe, this research found that on average plants now flowered over 6 days earlier than at the beginning of the last century, and these changes were strongly associated with warmer spring temperatures. Spatial modelling also showed that in some parts of Europe, plants flowered earlier or later than expected. This study highlights the importance of combining herbarium data analysis with spatial modelling when assessing long-term phenology trends on a large scale.

Climate warming changes synchrony of plants and pollinators

Rock climbing affects cliff-plant communities by reducing species diversity and altering species coexistence patterns

Summary: Cliffs are unique ecosystems with diverse plant life, including rare and endangered species. However, the increasing popularity of climbing poses a threat to this ecosystem, negatively impacting plant abundance, diversity, and species associations. Our study in El Potrero Chico, Mexico, found that climbing reduced the abundance and diversity of plants, particularly dominant species and rare endemic species. Climbing also disrupted species associations and led to the disappearance of locally rare and endangered species. Therefore, conservation efforts should focus on preserving the holistic ecosystem of cliffs, rather than solely prioritizing emblematic or rare species.

Variation in regrowth ability in relation to land-use intensity in three common grassland herbs
