Summary: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a liver disease characterized by necro-inflammatory lesions of hepatocytes, specific autoantibodies, and response to corticosteroid treatment. The diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical, biological, immunological, and histological findings, after excluding other causes of liver disease. Non-invasive tests can be used at different steps in the management of AIH for diagnosis and follow-up.

Summary: The study demonstrates that liver and spleen 2D-SWE are reliable complementary methods for diagnosing advanced fibrosis in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Spleen 2D-SWE appears to be less influenced by inflammation and could aid in fibrosis assessment in therapy-naive patients or those with active hepatitis.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of a recently introduced commercial alternative of ultrasound elastography (USE) called Visual Transient Elastography (ViTE) for the diagnosis of chronic liver disease (CLD). The results show that ViTE performs comparably to established USE methods in staging CLD.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of the FIB-4 score in a veteran population with chronic HCV infection, using VCTE as the gold standard for liver cirrhosis screening. The sensitivity of the FIB-4 score for ruling out liver cirrhosis was found to be low, especially in the indeterminate range of 1.45 to 3.25. Utilizing VCTE as a second staging method may be an effective approach for identifying liver cirrhosis in individuals with chronic HCV infection.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the feasibility and correlation of liver stiffness measurements using 2D-shear wave elastography and transient elastography in patients with chronic liver disease. The results showed a strong correlation between the two methods, but differences in feasibility were observed in obese patients.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between NAFLD, fibrosis, and serum retinol levels in American adults. The results showed a positive association between NAFLD and serum retinol levels, while a negative association was found between liver fibrosis and serum retinol levels. Further research is needed to confirm these associations.

Summary: The study investigated the predictive value of transient elastography (TE) for higher grade fibrosis in pediatric patients with hepatopathies, irrespective of the used histological scoring system. TE showed a good correlation to fibrosis severity and was able to distinguish between different fibrosis stages accurately. In contrast, the aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio (APRI) showed no correlation with fibrosis severity in children.

Summary: The full spectrum of risks for inactive hepatitis B virus carriers remains unclear. In this study, the researchers found that the lifetime risk for certain liver diseases was lower for inactive carriers compared to those in other phases. However, there was an increasing trend in incidence among inactive carriers. Factors such as biochemical relapse, obesity, and advanced age were associated with disease progression in inactive carriers.

Summary: Hepatitis B surface antigen-negative, hepatitis B virus DNA-positive occult hepatitis B infection is associated with liver fibrosis, and hepatitis B core antigen is correlated with elevated serum liver fibrosis indexes and may affect fibrotic progression in liver tissue.

Summary: A questionnaire study revealed that only a few specialized centers in pediatric cardiology in Germany use transient elastography (TE) to assess Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD). It is necessary to introduce a standardized national protocol for monitoring liver disease in Fontan patients.

Summary: Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus is a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, making surveillance of these patients crucial. Ultrasound elastography techniques offer a rapid, non-invasive, and cost-effective way to assess liver diseases, with potential advantages in monitoring HCV patients.

Summary: The FAST score is able to identify patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and significant fibrosis. People with HIV monoinfection and higher FAST score have a 9 times higher risk of liver-related outcomes. FAST score may assist in risk stratification for liver health in HIV medicine.
