Summary: This review found that the use of RT/TAS after restorative anterior resection for rectal cancer significantly reduced the rates of anastomotic leakage and complications requiring surgery compared to non-RT/TAS group. There was no significant difference in hospital length of stay between the two groups.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence of benign anastomotic strictures and factors associated with successful resolution. Results showed that 49.1% of patients experienced sustained improvement with endoscopic dilatation, while 45.4% required re-intervention. Good performance status, absence of anastomotic leak, and short-segment strictures predicted successful resolution.

Summary: Bowel resection is a necessary procedure for ovarian cancer treatment, but it can lead to anastomotic leakage, a common and serious complication. This meta-analysis identified multiple bowel resections as the only significant risk factor for anastomotic leaks. Further research is needed to identify additional risk factors and develop strategies to minimize the risk of anastomotic leaks in this population.

Summary: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) is a technically demanding procedure that is considered safe if performed in a high-volume institution with appropriately trained surgeons and medical staff. A standardized technique with easy realization of biliary anastomosis and hepatic-jejunal anastomosis placement can facilitate the surgical execution and minimize the learning curve for LPD. Further randomized controlled trials are needed to validate the superiority of minimally invasive approach.

Summary: The role of ureteral stents in preventing UIAS and UIAL remains controversial, with some studies showing a higher incidence of UIAS in the stented group but without reaching significant difference, and no difference in the incidence of UIAL between the stented and nonstented groups.

Summary: This study describes the development of a novel luminal stent to address anastomotic leak in gastrointestinal anastomoses. The stent was successfully placed in a pig model without any complications. Further research is needed to assess the applicability of the stent in different scenarios.

Summary: Benign anastomotic strictures following colorectal surgical resection are a common but under-reported complication, affecting up to 30% of patients and significantly impacting their quality of life. Endoscopic techniques, such as balloon dilatation and stenting, show varying success rates in avoiding the need for surgical reintervention, with challenges including the need for repeated treatments and stent migration. Further research is needed to explore novel therapies for improving quality of life in these patients.

Summary: This study investigated the safety and effectiveness of reinforced sutures for preventing anastomotic leakage (AL) after rectal cancer surgery. The results showed that the reinforced suture group had a lower AL incidence, lower infection rate, shorter hospital stay, and earlier anal exhaust compared to the unreinforced suture group. However, the operative time was longer for reinforced sutures.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 43 patients with BUO who underwent RS placement between 2010 and 2020. The results showed that there was no change in renal function and renal parenchymal volume after a mean follow-up of 26 months. However, only 28% of patients fulfilled the 1-year criterion for RS indwell time.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem cell delivery to an animal anastomosis is safe and feasible, but current findings are limited to surrogate histological outcomes. There is consistency in reported outcome measures, but variance in assessment methods. Compliance with ARRIVE guidelines is poor, but compliance with current international consensus in colon leak models is good.

Summary: There is a correlation between pathological response and anastomotic leak rate, with patients achieving a complete pathological response being more likely to develop anastomotic leaks compared to those who did not achieve a complete response.

Summary: Treatment of anastomotic leaks after Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy remains challenging. This study compares intracavitary endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) with self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) for the treatment of leaks < 30 mm, as there is limited data on this topic.

Summary: This study examines the complications and outcomes of temporary urethral stents as an adjuvant option after DVIU. The results demonstrate that this treatment is safe and provides satisfactory results, but further research is needed to confirm these findings.
