The results showed that higher pre-treatment vitamin D levels predicted significant endoscopic improvement in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), and improving vitamin D levels significantly lowered C-reactive protein levels in patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

Adverse Clinical Outcomes among Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients Treated for Urinary Tract Infection

Summary: This study indicates that patients with IBD have higher rates of hospitalization, acute kidney injury (AKI), and 30-day recurrent hospitalization compared to non-IBD patients in UTI treatment. Among IBD patients, older age, recent hospitalization, hydronephrosis, and AKI are associated with increased risk for adverse outcomes. There is no association observed between immunosuppressants or biologics and UTI outcomes in IBD patients.

Knockdown of PPARGC1A could attenuate the therapeutic effects of PDT on DSS-induced colitis and DSS-stimulated colonic epithelial cells.

Effects of microplastics in aquatic environments on inflammatory bowel disease

Summary: The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially in newly industrialized nations, has been increasing in recent years. Microplastics (MPs), a new class of environmental pollutants, are found in almost all aquatic environments and may pose health risks to the intestinal system through prolonged exposure. In this review, we found that MPs cause intestinal barrier dysfunction, imbalance in the intestinal microbiome, and metabolic abnormalities, ultimately leading to IBD. The analysis highlights the need for further research to better understand the complex relationship between MP exposure and IBD.

Summary: Vitamin D plays various roles in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including regulating bone mineral metabolism, modulating the immune system, and contributing to the pathogenesis of IBD. Vitamin D affects Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes, cytokine release, and the wnt/beta-catenin pathway. IBD is associated with dysbiosis of microbiota, abnormal inflammatory response, and vitamin D deficiency. Therefore, understanding the metabolic pathways, genetic determinants, and environmental factors of vitamin D is crucial for studying vitamin D supplementation in IBD patients, not only for osteoporosis prevention and therapy, but also for modulating the course and pharmacotherapy of IBD.

Adverse health effects of emerging contaminants on inflammatory bowel disease

Summary: In recent years, the prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has increased, especially in urban areas, due to improved living standards. The concept of emerging environmental contaminants, which refers to synthetic chemicals that were previously unnoticed or researched, is closely related to the development of industrialization and modernization, and is known to contribute to chronic diseases including IBD. These emerging contaminants include microplastics, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, chemical herbicides, heavy metals, and persisting organic pollutants. This review summarizes the adverse health effects of these contaminants on humans and their association with IBD, aiming to enhance understanding of their impact, reduce exposure, and lower the future incidence of IBD.

A high-fat diet (HFD) disrupts intestinal immune balance by impairing the intestinal barrier, influencing immune cells, and altering the gut microbiota. Conversely, a rational diet is believed to maintain intestinal immunity by regulating gut microbiota. This review emphasizes the crucial contributions of an HFD to the gut immune system and microbiota.

The results showed that ulcers, narrowing, and healing should be included in the endoscopic scoring, while scarring and inflammatory polyps should not. The optimal method for defining ulcer depth remains uncertain. This study identified priorities for future research to develop a more representative endoscopic index for CD.

Extensive colitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and backwash ileitis prior to IPAA as well as rectal dysplasia at time of IPAA raise the risk of pouch neoplasia significantly.
