Present study describes the synthesis of carboxylmethyl guar gum (CMGG) from the native guar gum (GG). Further, the prepared CMGG is grafted with gelatin to form CMGG-g-gelatin and then mixed with curcumin to prepare a biomaterial. The resultant biomaterial is subjected to the analysis of H-1 NMR, ATR-FTIR, TGA, SEM and XRD ensure the carboxymethylation and grafting. The results reveal that 45% of the amine groups of gelatin have been reacted with the -COOH group of CMGG and 90-95% of curcumin is released from CMGG-g-gelatin after 96 h of incubation in the phosphate buffer at physiological pH. In vitro cell line studies reveal the biocompatibility of the biomaterial and the antimicrobial studies display the growth inhibition against gram +ve and gram -ve organisms at a considerable level. Overall, the study indicates that the incorporation of curcumin Into CMGG-g-gelatin can improve the functional property of guar gum as well as gelatin. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Gnanadickam Jerald Maria Antony, Priya Poulose, Singanahalli ThippaReddy Aruna, Shailaja Kesavan Shanuja, Arumugam Gnanamani, Yalachigere Kempaiah Suneetha, Samikkannu Raja

Summary: In this study, a new thermo-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) based on biopolymers such as chitosan, cellulose acetate, and polyvinyl acetate was fabricated, with the addition of fillers like polyethylene glycol methacrylate grafted hydroxyapatite and turmeric powders. The developed SMP showed shape memory effect and improved mechanical properties, making it a potential candidate for applications in wound healing and bone implants. The Young's modulus of the SMP composite obtained in this study was higher than reported values for similar composites containing bioactive glass nanoparticles.

Effects of aging and diabetes on the deformation mechanisms and molecular structural characteristics of collagen fibrils under daily activity

Wei-Han Hui, Yen-Lin Chen, Shu-Wei Chang

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.
