A water-soluble polysaccharide was isolated from Crassostrea gigas (CGPS-1) by hot-water extraction, iso-electric precipitation, hydrolysis and ultrafiltration without using ethanol. Based on the calibration with Dextran, CGPS-1 had a molecular weight of approximately 6.5 x 10(6) Da. CGPS-1 was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Based on the data, CGPS-1 was found to be a uniform glucose polymer. The protective effect of CGPS-1 on acute carbon tetrachloride- and chronic ethanol-induced liver injury was investigated in mice. Treatment with CGPS-1 decreased serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels; increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity; and improved hepatic injury in both the acute and chronic models of liver injury in mice. These results suggest that CGPS-1 possesses potent hepatoprotective activity. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Characteristics of inorganic and organic phosphorus in Lake Sha sediments from a semiarid region, Northwest China: Sources and bioavailability

Huihui Ma, Yuanrong Zhu, Juan Jiang, Xiaojie Bing, Weining Xu, Xiaoyan Hu, Songlin Zhang, Yaqin Shen, Zhongqi He

Summary: Phosphorus (P) is a key limiting nutrient in lake ecosystems and cyanobacterial blooms. This study investigated the sources and bioavailability of organic and inorganic phosphorus (P-i and P-o) in the sediments of Lake Sha, China. The findings showed that organic matter in the sediments primarily originated from aquatic plants, bacteria, algae, and terrestrial plants, with particulate matter from terrestrial plants being an important source of phosphorus. The dominant form of phosphorus in the sediments was calcium-bonded phosphorus (Ca-P), which had low bioavailability. The distribution of Phragmites australis in the lake could lead to the transformation of Ca-P to bioavailable phosphorus. Analysis of the chemical composition revealed that bioavailable phosphorus in the overlying water mainly came from rapidly degrading diester P and labile monoester P in the sediments. Particulate matter from the Yellow River was identified as an important source of bioavailable P-i and P-o in Lake Sha.

Summary: This study identified the association between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and abdominal fat distribution in Chinese obese patients. The results showed that the abdominal visceral adipose deposit, but not the subcutaneous fat area, was associated with OSAS and was an independent risk factor for OSAS. Improving the distribution of abdominal fat may contribute to alleviating the severity of OSAS in obesity.

A retrospective cohort study of intensive gastric variceal ligation versus endoscopic gastric variceal obturation in the management of gastric variceal bleeding

Xuechen Liu, Na Wang, Shulin Jiang, Chuanjie Yang, Kunyi Liu, Li Liu, Hongwei Du, Huihui Ma, Hui Tian, Yonghong Zhou, Zhijie Feng, Huiqing Jiang

Summary: In the treatment of gastric variceal bleeding, ligation is more effective than gastric variceal obturation (GVO) in reducing the rebleeding rate and associated mortality. Independent predictors for rebleeding after initial treatment include the endoscopic treatment method, total bilirubin level, liver cancer, and diabetes. For mortality prediction, male sex, liver cancer, ascites, and rebleeding after initial treatment are independent predictors.

Molecular Mechanism of Naringenin Against High-Glucose-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells Proliferation and Migration Based on Network Pharmacology and Transcriptomic Analyses

Wenjun He, Yanming Wang, Rui Yang, Huihui Ma, Xuqing Qin, Meijuan Yan, Yi Rong, Yufang Xie, Li Li, Junqiang Si, Xinzhi Li, Ketao Ma

Summary: This study investigated the potential targets and molecular mechanism of naringenin (Nar) in treating high-glucose-induced vasculopathy. The results showed that Nar has anti-proliferation and anti-migration effects on vascular smooth muscle cells. The core targets of Nar were identified as vascular endothelial growth factor A, proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase Src, and kinase insert domain receptor. The PI3K/Akt pathway was found to be involved in the protective effects of Nar. These findings suggest the potential of Nar in treating diabetic angiopathies.

Summary: In this study, the researchers identified BICD2 as a novel candidate gene associated with familial dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Through whole-exome sequencing and zebrafish models, they discovered an autosomal recessive missense variant in the BICD2 gene that correlated with the disease phenotype of DCM. Further investigation using the zebrafish models revealed that bicd2 knockout resulted in heart dilation and decreased cardiac function, resembling the phenotype of human DCM. Gene expression analysis also showed significant alterations in cardiac pathways and mitochondrial energy metabolism in bicd2-deficient fish.

Effects of aging and diabetes on the deformation mechanisms and molecular structural characteristics of collagen fibrils under daily activity

Wei-Han Hui, Yen-Lin Chen, Shu-Wei Chang

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.
