Background: Very few studies have investigated the real world prospective, predictive value of behavioral instruments used in laboratory studies to test decision-making abilities or impulse control. The current study examines the degree to which 2 commonly used decision-making/impulse control measures prospectively predict (heavy) alcohol use in a sample of college students. Methods: Two hundred healthy young adults (50% women) performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and a StopSignal inhibition task in the second college year. At testing and at the end of the fourth college year, heavy alcohol use was assessed. Results: Disadvantageous performance on the IGT was associated with higher scores on a heavy drinking measure and higher quantity/frequency of alcohol use 2 years past neurocognitive testing in male students even after controlling for prior drinking. These results were corrected for heavy drinking and alcohol use in the period before neurocognitive testing. Interactions with gender indicated that this general pattern held for male but not for female students. Level of response inhibition was not associated with either of the alcohol use measures prospectively. Conclusion: These findings indicate that a neurocognitive decision-making task is predictive of maladaptive alcohol use. Advantageous decision makers appear to show adaptive real-life decision making, changing their drinking habits to the changing challenges of early adulthood (e.g., finishing college), whereas disadvantageous decision makers do not, and continue to drink heavily. These findings extend earlier findings of neurocognitive predictors of relapse in clinical substance-dependent groups, to subclinical alcohol use and abuse.

Youth in transition: Study protocol of a prospective cohort study into the long-term course of addiction, mental health problems and social functioning in youth entering addiction treatment

Summary: This study aims to investigate the rate of persistent SUD and its predictors among adolescents in addiction treatment, focusing on DSM-5 SUD patients. A total of 420 youths aged 16 to 22 will be included in a multi-center prospective cohort design, with assessments conducted at baseline, end of treatment, and 2 and 4 years post-baseline to predict SUD outcome. There is a lack of long-term prospective studies on the course of SUD in adolescents in addiction treatment, and this study aims to fill this gap by providing insights into determinants and consequences of persistent SUD among high-risk adolescents during the critical transition from adolescence to young adulthood.

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy-enhanced compared with treatment-as-usual for anorexia nervosa in an inpatient and outpatient routine setting: a consecutive cohort study

Summary: This study compares the effectiveness and treatment costs of specialized psychological treatment versus regular treatment for adult clients with anorexia nervosa. The results indicate that CBT-E is not superior in terms of remission, but it is better in terms of weight regain. The economic evaluation suggests that CBT-E generates better health gain, but at additional costs. This study contributes to understanding the effectiveness and treatment costs of psychological treatments for adults with anorexia nervosa in routine practice.

Forensic Psychiatric Outpatients' and Therapists' Perspectives on a Wearable Biocueing App (Sense-IT) as an Addition to Aggression Regulation Therapy: Qualitative Focus Group and Interview Study

Janna F. ter Harmsel, Lisanne M. Smulders, Matthijs L. Noordzij, Lise T. A. Swinkels, Anna E. Goudriaan, Arne Popma, Thimo M. van der Pol

Summary: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of psychiatric outpatients and therapists in a forensic setting on the use and implementation of the Sense-IT biocueing app in aggression regulation therapy. The findings showed a positive attitude from both groups towards incorporating the biocueing intervention into therapy. Various specific barriers and facilitators were identified at different levels, with technical issues being the primary concern.

A guided digital intervention to reduce cannabis use: The ICan randomized controlled trial

Summary: This study tested the effectiveness of a digital intervention (ICan) compared to educational cannabis information in reducing cannabis use. The findings showed that ICan was more effective in reducing the grams of cannabis used over 3 months, but not in reducing the number of cannabis use days at 6-month follow-up. Both interventions maintained reductions in cannabis use between 3 and 6 months' follow-up.

Striatal ups or downs? Neural correlates of monetary reward anticipation, cue reactivity and their interaction in alcohol use disorder and gambling disorder

Tim Van Timmeren, Ruth J. Van Holst, Anna E. Goudriaan

Summary: This study compared the activation of the striatum during reward anticipation between patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and gambling disorder (GD) using functional MRI. The results showed hypoactivation of the reward system in AUD patients compared to healthy controls. However, the study did not support the hypothesis that addiction-related cues explain striatal dysfunction.

Summary: Research has shown that individuals with alcohol or drug use or gambling disorders can greatly impact their family members, yet these family members are often overlooked in research and support services. To address this need, the 5-Step Method was developed and evaluated in the Netherlands, with positive results in reducing family burden.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests distinct neurobiological correlates of alcohol use disorder (AUD) between sexes. This study aimed to characterize the sex differences in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) correlates of AUD. Results showed both shared and distinct widespread effects on GM and WM volumes in females and males with AUD.

Summary: This study aimed to test and train the cognitive functions of addiction treatment patients using a serious gaming smartphone app. The results showed that it was feasible and acceptable to use a smartphone app for cognitive assessment in SUDs patients who were interested and highly educated; however, the feasibility of cognitive training was lower and improvement of the application and enhancement of client motivation are needed.
