Background: This study was aimed at assessing the psychometric qualities of the abbreviated versions of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-3, AUDIT-4, AUDIT-C, AUDIT-PC, AUDIT-QF, FAST, and Five-Shot) and at comparing them to the 10-item AUDIT and the CAGE in 2 samples of Brazilian adults. Methods: The validity and internal consistency of the scales were assessed in a sample of 530 subjects attended at an emergency department and at a Psychosocial Care Center for Alcohol and Drugs. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV was used as the diagnostic comparative measure for the predictive validity assessment. The concurrent validity between the scales was analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The assessment of the predictive validity of the abbreviated versions showed high sensitivity (of 0.78 to 0.96) and specificity (of 0.74 to 0.94) indices, with areas under the curve as elevated as those of the AUDIT (0.89 and 0.92 to screen for abuse and 0.93 and 0.95 in the screening of dependence). The CAGE presented lower indices: 0.81 for abuse and 0.87 for dependence. The analysis of the internal consistency of the AUDIT and its versions exhibited Cronbach's alpha coefficients between 0.83 and 0.94, while the coefficient for the CAGE was 0.78. Significant correlations were found between the 10-item AUDIT and its versions, ranging from 0.91 to 0.99. Again, the results for the CAGE were satisfactory (0.77), although inferior to the other instruments. Conclusions: The results obtained in this study confirm the validity of the abbreviated versions of the AUDIT for the screening of alcohol use disorders and show that their psychometric properties are as satisfactory as those of the 10-item AUDIT and the CAGE.

The emotional and psychiatric problems of adolescents on parole whose parents are substance users: A Brazilian cross-sectional study

Ludmila Goncalves Perruci, Alessandra Diehl, Belisa Vieira da Silveira, Jessica Adrielle Teixeira, Jacqueline Souza, Adriana Inocenti Miasso, Patricia Leila dos Santos, Manoel Antonio dos Santos, Roberto Molina de Souza, Sandra Cristina Pillon, Christopher Wagstaff

Summary: This study found associations between adolescents having parents with substance use problems and having suffered neglect within the family, and their behavioral problems including psychological and drug use issues. The participants were enrolled in the 'Assisted Freedom' program, with the majority being male adolescents aged 13-17. Factors such as living with both parents, low family income, hallucinations, violent behavior control problems, and physical neglect were found to be more common among adolescents with substance-using parents and experience of parental neglect.

A Bayesian approach for estimating the parameters of an α-stable distribution

M. J. Karling, S. R. C. Lopes, R. M. de Souza

Summary: The lack of closed representations for the density functions of alpha-stable distributions in Bayesian inference has historically led to the use of bivariate probability density functions and Fast Fourier Transforms of their characteristic functions. This study presents a new approach using a full power series representation for the probability density functions and provides Bayesian estimation analysis for one-dimensional stable distributions using two different parameterization systems. Goodness-of-fit tests, loss functions, decision rules, a simulation study, and two empirical applications are also included in the analysis.

Mental-physical multimorbidity treatment adherence challenges in Brazilian primary care: A qualitative study with patients and their healthcare providers

Summary: This study examined the experiences of healthcare providers and primary care patients with mental-physical multimorbidity treatment adherence in Brazil. Through in-depth interviews, the study identified ten meta-themes related to treatment adherence, including the variability and accessibility of treatment options, the importance of disease acceptance for treatment initiation, and the role of person-centered communication in treatment adherence.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the validity and feasibility of using the INTERMED assessment tool to assess health complexity in a primary health care (PHC) population. The results showed that INTERMED had moderate correlations with quality of life, anxiety and depression symptoms, and social support. It also demonstrated good internal consistency and had a short application time.

Excess mortality in a cohort of Brazilian patients with a median follow-up of 11 years after the first psychiatric hospital admission

Summary: This study estimated the mortality rates of Brazilian patients after their first psychiatric admission and identified possible risk factors associated with higher mortality rates. The results showed that the mortality rates were three times higher than expected, with the highest rates found in patients with alcohol-related disorders. Male sex, older age, and unemployment significantly increased the risk of mortality from all causes.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of self-reported rape and its associations with other forms of violence and mental health outcomes. The study found that women and individuals between the ages of 35 and 46, as well as those without religious affiliation, were more likely to experience rape. Other factors associated with rape included a history of childhood sexual abuse, child prostitution, and witnessing violence during childhood. Lack of social support, recent negative events, depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts were also related to being raped.

Summary: Understanding the needs of psychiatric patients is crucial for mental health care planning, yet research on these needs is lacking in low- and middle-income countries. A study in Brazil analyzed the met and unmet needs of patients four years after their first psychiatric hospitalization, finding that socioeconomic indicators were the best predictors of needs, with unmet needs related to welfare benefits pointing to the necessity for specific social and health policies.
