Summary: In men, autoimmune diseases were associated with increased common carotid intima-media thickness and higher percentage of individuals with thicker IMT. However, no significant differences were observed in arterial stiffness. Women, on the other hand, did not show significant differences in any of the carotid features between those with and without autoimmune diseases. Sex was found to be an effect modifier in the association between common carotid IMT values and autoimmune diseases diagnosis.

Summary: This study investigates the utility of antioxidant barrier, redox status, and stress biomarkers in different biological fluids in post-mortem analysis of patients with acute alcohol intoxication. The results show significant increase of antioxidant activity and concentration in urine samples, but no significant differences in other circulating fluids. The observations may be influenced by irreversible post-mortem changes. The use of circulating body fluids to assess redox homeostasis is limited in post-mortem analysis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential changes in behavioral adjustment in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and its association with relapse. The results showed significant differences in stop signal reaction time (SSRT) and trigger failure between the AUD and control groups. The relapsed group exhibited longer post-error slowing (PES), and PES could predict relapse in AUD.

Summary: Chronic alcohol abuse leads to alterations in the gastrointestinal microbiota, resulting in behavior changes, physiological alterations, and immunological effects. This study developed a humanized alcohol-microbiota mouse model and found that colonization of mice with fecal microbiota from individuals with high AUDIT scores increased susceptibility to pneumonia.

Summary: Rejection sensitivity (RS), characterized by anxiously expecting, perceiving, and reacting to rejection, is associated with interpersonal problems and psychopathological symptoms in severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD). However, empirical studies on RS in SAUD are limited, with a focus on its later components. This study investigated the anticipation of rejection in 105 SAUD patients, finding higher affective anticipation (AA) scores but not cognitive rejection expectancy (RE) scores. AA was associated with interpersonal problems and psychopathological symptoms, highlighting its clinical relevance in SAUD.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using VR-based cognitive training to improve the cognitive function of patients with AUD, as well as estimating the effect size for future RCTs. Results suggested that cognitive training using VR contributed to enhancing attention and cognitive flexibility in patients recovering from AUD.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the benefits of enhanced emotional regulation strategies in abstinent individuals with alcohol use disorders using the ART program. Results showed improvements in emotional regulation and mindfulness, particularly in short-term abstinent individuals. This highlights the effectiveness of ART in promoting rapid implementation of new emotion regulation strategies in individuals recovering from alcohol use disorders.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that abstinence can lead to an increase in cue-induced drug craving, including for nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine. However, research on methamphetamine craving incubation has not fully explored the neuropsychological and electrophysiological dynamics associated with this process. This study utilized EEG signals to track cue-induced craving in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder, finding that craving peaked at 1-3 months of abstinence along with changes in sleep quality and specific brain wave frequencies, suggesting potential neurophysiological signatures for identifying those at risk for relapse and guiding future therapeutic interventions.

Summary: Nguyen et al. used liver organoid cultures to study somatic mutations in stem cells from patients with liver diseases, finding that precancerous liver diseases do not lead to increased mutations or altered types in individual stem cells. This contrasts with mutational load in liver tumors, suggesting liver disease may drive tumorigenesis through indirect mechanisms.

Summary: Through the WBBC pilot project, we conducted large-scale genome sequencing and genotyping on Chinese individuals and established a population-specific reference panel and an online imputation server. By analyzing the data, we discovered the geographical boundary and genetic differences among the Han Chinese, providing important insights into the genetic characteristics and evolution of the Chinese population.

Summary: This study shows that rats' responsiveness to punishment in drug use can change rapidly and persistently with experience, with different intensities of punishment leading to complete cessation of drug self-administration in one experience. Increased responsiveness to punishment persists for at least one month and varies in individuals tested, but is not observed with non-painful forms of punishment. The study suggests potential mechanisms for changes in punishment responsiveness and implications for research on compulsion-like behavior in animal models.

Summary: This study aims to calculate a lung cancer risk score using GP electronic medical records (EMR) for accurate screening of high-risk individuals. By analyzing 2.3 million GP EMR and validating it with 211,597 individuals, the GP-EMR-derived score shows higher accuracy compared to the current lung cancer screening pilot methods.

Summary: This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a mindfulness-based intervention for addressing both smoking and alcohol use. The results showed that the intervention had comparable outcomes to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in reducing tobacco and alcohol use. Future research should conduct large-scale trials to evaluate the efficacy of this intervention.

Summary: Alcohol-related crimes are common globally, with a high prevalence of intoxicated suspects in Sweden according to a survey of police officers. The study found differences in procedures among police departments for handling intoxicated suspects, highlighting the need for (inter)national guidelines and further scientific research on the effects of alcohol on suspects' memory and decision-making.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the inconsistent decision-making of police officers when interviewing alcohol-intoxicated witnesses and the potential influence of scientific research as well as pre-existing social norms. The results showed that the level of witness intoxication affected the probability of interview and perceived witness credibility. The study also indicated that police officers lacked research-based knowledge and their decision-making was influenced by research-based information.

Summary: The Swedish police lack national guidelines for dealing with intoxicated victims/witnesses, and interaction with intoxicated individuals is common but lacks standardized procedures. The prevalence rate of intoxicated witnesses/victims in Sweden is similar to rates in Australia, the U.S., and U.K. The Swedish police are unaware of research on conducting investigative interviews with intoxicated witnesses and victims.

Summary: This study investigates police interrogations related to low-stakes crimes involving alcohol and/or drugs, finding that many suspects are intoxicated or have substance use disorders, making them more cooperative during interrogations. Law enforcement tends to use more confrontational techniques with intoxicated suspects compared to sober suspects, indicating a need for further research on interrogation practices in low-stakes crimes.

The results show that the rapport and relationship building are positively associated with suspect cooperation, while confrontation/competition and presentation of evidence are negatively associated with cooperation.

Summary: The study found that parental alcohol consumption has a significant impact on adolescent drinking habits, especially in the 17-year-old age group. Novelty seeking was identified as a strong risk factor in all three age groups, while parental control and knowledge did not have a significant impact. Parental solicitation increased the odds of alcohol consumption at age 17, while adolescent disclosure decreased the odds.
