Irrigation on the move: How transient farming partnerships facilitate the expansion of smallholder irrigation along ephemeral rivers in dryland areas of Kenya

Benson Mutuma Karimba, Annelieke Duker, Pooja Prasad, Poolad Karimi, Charlotte de Fraiture, Pieter van der Zaag

Summary: This research found that in the Olkeriai sand river area of Kajiado, Kenya, 75% of farm plots are managed through transient farming partnerships based on flexible agreements. These partnerships provide fertile ground for new entrepreneurial players, both locally and from outside the area, accelerating irrigation intensification and expansion.

Van Lanen

Summary: Human activities both aggravate and alleviate streamflow drought, with water abstraction being the dominant aggravating factor and water transfers effectively reducing drought. Reservoir releases can alleviate drought in dry season but change flow seasonality. Land use has a smaller impact, with both positive and negative effects observed.

May the Odds Be in Your Favor: Why Many Attempts to Reoperate Dams for the Environment Stall

Afua Owusu, Marloes Mul, Pieter van der Zaag, Jill Slinger

Summary: This study explores the impasse narrative of dam reoperation for e-flows implementation and presents four hypotheses for further research. These hypotheses include the supportive role of scientists, reaching consensus with local stakeholders, the enabling environment provided by local legislation and policy, and the potential of consultations and negotiations to overcome obstacles.

The clam and the dam: A Bayesian belief network approach to environmental flow assessment in a data scarce region

Afua Owusu, Marloes Mul, Michael Strauch, Pieter van der Zaag, Martin Volk, Jill Slinger

Summary: This study explores a designer e-flow approach using the Volta clam as an indicator species, visualizing and quantifying the factors influencing its extent in a Bayesian belief network. The study recommends low flows and annual breaching of the sandbar at the Volta Estuary during specific life stages of the Volta clam. The results demonstrate the potential suitability of a BBN for modeling the linkages between flows, management practices, and ecological indicators for the development of e-flows in data-scarce regions.

Irrigation development under uncertainty: A call for adaptive investment pathways

Pooja Prasad, Annelieke Duker, Charlotte de Fraiture, Pieter van der Zaag

Summary: There is a need to enhance irrigation access in sub-Saharan Africa to meet the challenges of growing population and climate risk. The conventional approach of big investments in large irrigation infrastructure is risky, and an alternate adaptive investment pathways (AdIP) approach is proposed. AdIP involves monitoring, learning, and making smaller investments to ensure flexibility and reduce the chances of failure.

Dam-induced hydrological alterations in the upper Cauvery river basin, India

Anjana Ekka, Saket Keshav, Saket Pande, Pieter van der Zaag, Yong Jiang

Summary: This study examines the hydrological alterations resulting from reservoir construction and water abstraction in the upper Cauvery river basin in India. Using a landscape-based hydrological model, the study analyzes the impacts of dams on river flow regimes. The results show that reservoir impoundment and water abstractions have modified the natural flow regimes, particularly in terms of median monthly flow, 1-day minimum flow, and low pulses. These findings provide valuable insights for water managers to sustain natural flow regimes and contribute to the sustainable management of river basins in India.

Understanding Sentinel-1 backscatter response to sugarcane yield variability and waterlogging

Nadja den Besten, Susan Steele Dunne, Ashfak Mahmud, Daniel Jackson, Benjamin Aouizerats, Richard de Jeu, Rogier Burger, Rasmus Houborg, Mark McGlinchey, Pieter van der Zaag

Summary: This study aimed to improve understanding of the relationship between Sentinel-1 backscatter and sugarcane yield variability and waterlogging. Through analysis of an irrigated sugarcane plantation in Mozambique, different polarizations were assessed and benchmarked against optical indices and passive microwave observations. The results showed that VV backscatter was related to stalk development and sucrose accumulation. The presence of water underneath the canopy caused an increase in all polarizations and the cross ratio (CR). This implies that Sentinel-1 backscatter contains information on both waterlogging and sucrose development.

The Changing Faces of Farmer-Led Irrigation: Lessons from Dynamic Irrigation Trajectories in Kenya and Zimbabwe

Annelieke E. C. Duker, Sambulisiwe Maseko, Mehluli A. Moyo, Benson M. Karimba, Alex Bolding, Pooja Prasad, Charlotte de Fraiture, Pieter Van der Zaag

Summary: This study analyzes temporal changes in farmers' irrigation strategies in Kenya and Zimbabwe, including expansion, downsizing, or cessation of practices, as part of wider livelihood decisions and aspirations. The results show that farmers frequently alternate strategies or cease or restart operations over the years, both by force and choice. The study concludes that farmers' needs cannot always be expressed in general terms of growth or commercial farming, nor can they always be satisfied by improving the enabling environment, which may be based on static ontologies of diverse types of farmers.

Quantifying the trade-offs in re-operating dams for the environment in the Lower Volta River

Afua Owusu, Jazmin Zatarain Salazar, Marloes Mul, Pieter van der Zaag, Jill Slinger

Summary: The construction of the Akosombo and Kpong dams in Ghana had negative impacts on the downstream riverine ecosystem and the livelihoods of affected communities. Despite this, Ghana benefited economically from hydropower, irrigation, and lake tourism. The study explores trade-offs between water for river ecosystems and human water demands using a policy search method, and suggests opportunities for compromise and strategic provision of environmental flows in the Lower Volta River.

A framework for irrigation performance assessment using WaPOR data: the case of a sugarcane estate in Mozambique

Abebe D. Chukalla, Marloes L. Mul, Pieter van der Zaag, Gerardo van Halsema, Evaristo Mubaya, Esperanca Muchanga, Nadja den Besten, Poolad Karimi

Summary: This study utilizes WaPOR data to evaluate irrigation performance indicators at the Xinavane sugarcane estate in Mozambique. Different irrigation methods show varied performance indicators, with center pivot irrigation demonstrating better adequacy, equity, and land productivity but lower water productivity compared to sprinkler and furrow irrigation methods.

The Water-Energy-Food Nexus Index: A Tool to Support Integrated Resource Planning, Management and Security

Gareth B. Simpson, Graham P. W. Jewitt, William Becker, Jessica Badenhorst, Sara Masia, Ana R. Neves, Pere Rovira, Victor Pascual

Summary: The call for measuring synergies and trade-offs between water, energy, and food is increasing worldwide. This article presents the development and application of a country-level index that has been calculated for 181 nations using open databases. The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus Index is utilized to assess the Southern African Development Community, highlighting concerns regarding food security and potential benefits in water resources and energy projects. The article emphasizes that the composite indicator and WEF nexus approach are not a cure-all solution, but can contribute to integrated resource management and policy-making.
