Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of older patients receiving potentially inappropriate medications at ASP Pio Albergo Trivulzio intermediate care facility. The inappropriate prescription of PPIs was mainly associated with the use of heparin, suggesting optimization of PPI and psychotropic drug prescriptions should be considered.

Summary: In this study, a high prevalence of polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing was found in elderly individuals living with HIV. Common prescribing issues included incorrect dosage, lack of indication, and drugs not appropriate for the elderly. Risk factors for prescribing issues included polypharmacy, renal impairment, treatment with CNS-active drugs, and being female. Medication reconciliation and regular prescription reviews by experienced physicians are recommended to reduce polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing in this vulnerable population.

Summary: In a study of geriatric Portuguese patients receiving post-acute and long-term care, high prevalence of PIMs and PPOs were found, with predictors of PIMs including female gender, hospital provenience, and number of medications, while predictors of PPOs were Charlson Comorbidity Index and history of recent fractures.STOPP/START criteria may be effective in improving prescribing quality and clinical outcomes in frail elderly patients.

Summary: In the context of improved medication management of older patients, the study evaluated the overprescription of potentially inappropriate drugs (alpha 1-blockers and 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors) for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). The results showed that approximately 72% of older individuals received potentially inappropriate prescriptions, mainly involving alpha 1-blockers. These prescriptions were associated with a higher frequency of falls.

Summary: The study found that nurse practitioners (NPs) prescribed fewer initial PIMs and were less likely to refill a PIM after an outpatient visit than physicians. The odds of receiving PIMs during an NP visit varied by age, race/ethnicity, rurality, and number of comorbidities.

Summary: The study in Mexico found a high prevalence of potentially inappropriate prescribing (PPI) in older adults, with NSAIDs, vasodilators, and sulfonylureas being the most frequently prescribed medications. The STOPP criteria had the highest prevalence among the different listing criteria used in the study.

Summary: Comparing the rates of inappropriate prescribing between nurse practitioners and primary care physicians, it was found that they were virtually identical. Although nurse practitioners were overrepresented among clinicians with the highest and lowest rates of inappropriate prescribing, discrepancies in rates tended to be larger across states rather than between these practitioners within states.

Summary: The study found that in elderly patients with poor nutritional status, the severity of comorbidities, STOPP and START alerts, and BEERS 2019 criteria were significantly worse. Additionally, patients with higher MNA scores had higher estimated 10-year survival rates and lower ADR risk scores.

Summary: Pharmacological intervention is crucial in modern healthcare, but inappropriate use of drugs is common in elderly patients. This study investigated the prevalence of potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs) among older outpatients in the Piedmont Region over a seven-year period. The results showed a reduction in PIP prevalence, but one out of three older outpatients still experienced inappropriate prescriptions, highlighting the need for intervention and improvement in prescribing.

Summary: This study found that older women are more likely to be prescribed potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) compared to men, especially in the cardiovascular-metabolic multimorbidity patterns. Sex differences were mainly observed in cardiovascular-metabolic plus physical conditions and cardiovascular-metabolic plus mental conditions patterns, indicating the need for future interventions to reduce these risks in medication prescribing.

Summary: Proton pump inhibitors are commonly prescribed drugs for acid-related disorders, but a study found that 35.9% of patients in a family medicine outpatient clinic had no proper indications for their usage. The inappropriate usage rate was significantly higher in patients over 60 years old, with polypharmacy being the main reason for nonapproved indications.
