Refluxing a mixture of phthalonitrile (C6RRRR4)-R-1-R-2-R-3(CN)(2) 1 (R-1-R-4 =H), or its substituted derivatives 2 (R-1, R-3, R-4 = H, R-2 = Me), or 3 (R-1, R-4 =H, R-2, R-3=Cl) (1equiv.) and N,N-diethylhydroxylamine, Et2NOH, (4equivs.) in methanol for 4 h results (Route A) in precipitation of the symmetrical (6 and 8) and an isomeric mixture of unsymmetrical (7) phthalocyanines, isolated in good (55-65 %) yields. The reaction of phthalonitriles 1, 2, or 4 (R-1, R-3, R-4 =H, R-2 =NO2) (4equivs.) with Et2NOH (8 equivs.) in the presence of a metal salt MCl2 (M = Zn, Cd, Co, Ni) (1 equiv.) in n-BuOH or without solvent results in the formation of metallated phthalocyanine species (9-17). Upon refluxing in freshly dis- tilled dry chloroform, phthalonitrile I or its substituted analogues 2, 3 or 5 (R-1-R-4= F) (1 equiv.) react with NN-diethylhydroxylamine (2 equivs.) affording 3-iminoisoindolin- 1 -ones 18-21 (Route B) isolated in good yields (55-80 %). All the prepared compounds were characterized with C, H, and N elemental analyses, ESI-MS, IR, and compounds 18-21 also by ID (H-1, C-13{H-1}), and 2D (H-1, (15) N-HMBC and H-1,C-13-HMQC,H-1,C-13-HMBC) NMR spectroscopy.

Catalytic Enantioselective Synthesis Enabled by Electrochemistry

Ana Maria Faisca Phillips, Armando J. L. Pombeiro

Summary: Catalytic enantioselective electrochemical synthesis, as an efficient and sustainable approach, has recently gained attention in obtaining chiral, non-racemic molecules. Fine-tuning of reaction conditions using minute differences in potential allows for high chemoselectivities. Although the number of methods is limited, they enable a variety of bond-forming reactions with high yields and enantioselectivities. This review surveys literature published in the past four years.

Peroxidative Oxidation of Cyclohexane Using 3d Metal Complexes with Hydrazone-Derived Ligands as Catalysts: Exploring (Un)Conventional Conditions

Nuno Reis Conceicao, Beatriz P. P. Nobre, Atash V. V. Gurbanov, Antonio M. F. Palavra, M. Fatima C. Guedes da Silva, Kamran T. T. Mahmudov, Armando J. L. Pombeiro

Summary: Four complexes (1-2 and 3-4, 5, and 6) were screened as potential catalysts for the peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane. The best results were achieved with complexes 1 and 2 in the presence of PCA as promoter. In non-conventional conditions like acetonitrile-scCO(2) or MW irradiation, higher yields and TOFs were obtained compared to traditional conditions.

Combined σ- and π-Hole Donor Properties of Perfluorinated Iodo(or bromo)benzenes: Halogen Bonding and π-Hole Interactions in Cocrystals Including Cu4I4 Clusters

Yulia N. Toikka, Galina L. Starova, Vitalii V. Suslonov, Rosa M. Gomila, Antonio Frontera, Vadim Yu. Kukushkin, Nadezhda A. Bokach

Summary: Cocrystallization of CuI with NCNMe2 in the presence of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-FIB) and 1,4-dibromotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-FBrB) in MeCN resulted in the formation of three cocrystals. The solid-state structures of these cocrystals were studied using X-ray diffraction. Perfluorinated haloarenes act as combined sigma- and pi-hole donors and form intermolecular contacts with the copper clusters through halogen bonding and pi-hole interactions with the iodine ligands. Theoretical calculations suggest that the formation of (cubane)•(perfluorinated haloarene) pi-hole dimer is slightly more energetically favorable than (cubane)•(perfluorinated haloarene) HaB-based sigma-hole dimer. These interactions involve additional hydrogen bonding and pi-hole(N-CN)•••X (X = Br, I) contacts, leading to moderately strong noncovalent binding between the copper clusters and the aromatic HaB donors.

Bis(perfluoroaryl)chalcolanes ArF2Ch (Ch = S, Se, Te) as ?/?-Hole Donors for Supramolecular Applications Based on Noncovalent Bonding

Anton V. Rozhkov, Margarita V. Zhmykhova, Yury V. Torubaev, Eugene A. Katlenok, Dmitry M. Kryukov, Vadim Yu. Kukushkin

Summary: Perfluorinated arenes can be converted to bis-(perfluoroaryl)chalcolanes via a one-pot methodology. Crystal structures of the generated compounds are determined, and their self-association through sigma-hole interactions and pi-pi stacking is observed in the solid state. The sigma/pi-hole properties of these compounds are evaluated using molecular electrostatic potential surface analysis.

Benzothienoiodolium Cations Doubly Bonded to Anions via Halogen-Chalcogen and Halogen-Hydrogen Supramolecular Synthons

Irina I. Fedorova, Natalia S. Soldatova, Daniil M. Ivanov, Ksenia Nikiforova, Irina S. Aliyarova, Mekhman S. Yusubov, Peter M. Tolstoy, Rosa M. Gomila, Antonio Frontera, Vadim Yu. Kukushkin, Pavel S. Postnikov, Giuseppe Resnati

Summary: This study reports the planarity of the benzothienoiodolium cation and the preorganization it provides for the hydrogen, halogen, and chalcogen bonds formed by the phenyl hydrogen, iodolium iodine, and thienyl sulfur. Crystallographic analysis reveals the coupling of these bonds to a single anion, coordinated via the supramolecular and heteroditopic synthon XB/HB or XB/ChB. The interactions of these synthons act synergistically and result in unusually short chalcogen bonds formed by the thienyl sulfur.

Linear and Bent Noncovalent M•••S=C=N-M' Interactions: The Case of Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) Thiocyanate Species

Maria V. Kashina, Mikhail A. Kinzhalov, Elena Yu. Tupikina, Vadim Yu. Kukushkin

Summary: Analysis of X-ray crystal structures of newly prepared thiocyanate Pd-II and Pt-II complexes revealed the bifurcated ((M) - (N))…S contacts in which angles M…S=C are close to 180 degrees. The noncovalent interactions of M…S=C=N-M' were categorized as linear (approximately 180 degrees) and bent (angle M…S=C 80-120 degrees). The linear structures were primarily determined by crystal packing effects and orbital interactions, while the bent structures were influenced by electrostatic forces.

Applications of Hantzsch Esters in Organocatalytic Enantioselective Synthesis

Ana Maria Faisca Phillips, Armando J. L. Pombeiro

Summary: Hantzsch esters have emerged as versatile reagents for enantioselective organic transformations in the last century. They can selectively reduce various multiple bonds, such as C=C and C=N, as hydride transfer agents under mild reaction conditions. Additionally, they are effective for the dearomatization of heteroaromatic substances and can participate in cascade processes. In recent years, they have also been employed in photoredox reactions, acting as sacrificial electron and hydrogen donors, as well as alkyl or acyl radical transfer agents.

Summary: Binuclear half-lantern platinum(II) complexes [Pt(pbt)(mu-S boolean AND N)] 2 (pbtH = 2-phenylbenzothiazole, S boolean AND N = benzo[d]-thiazole-2-thiolate Pt1, 6-fluorobenzo[d]thiazole-2-thiolate Pt2, 6-chlorobenzo[d]thiazole-2-thiolate Pt3, 6-bromobenzo[d]thiazole-2-thiolate Pt4, and 6-iodobenzo[d]thiazole-2-thiolate Pt5) were synthesized with high yield by reacting [Pt(pbt)(NCMe)(2)]NO3 complex with appropriate benzo[d]thiazole-2-thiole in the presence of tBuOK. Complexes Pt1-5 exhibit intense red photoluminescence with high quantum yields. The substitution of H-to-F and H-to-Cl leads to significantly higher electroluminescence brightness, which is attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the F-containing complex Pt2 and Cl-containing complex Pt3.

A Mild and Sustainable Procedure for the Functionalization of Morpholin-2-Ones by Oxidative Imidation Reactions

Ana Maria Faisca Phillips, Armando J. L. Pombeiro

Summary: Nitrogen-containing heterocycles, such as morpholin-2-ones, are important structural elements in biologically active substances and can serve as synthetic intermediates. A new method for regioselective cross-dehydrogenative coupling between morpholinones and cyclic imides was developed using copper(I) chloride as a metal catalyst and molecular oxygen as the oxidant. The C-N coupled products were obtained in high yields under mild conditions, and they have potential applications in the development of biologically active compounds as well as functionalized polymers or PROTACs.

Why a simple vanadate is inefficient as a catalyst in the oxidation of alkanes with H2O2 - the long-standing puzzle is solved

Maxim L. Kuznetsov, Armando J. L. Pombeiro

Summary: In contrast to V(v) complexes with various organic ligands, a simple vanadate without any additive is inactive in neutral medium toward the oxidation of alkanes with H2O2. In this work, we discovered that the insufficient activation of H2O2 upon coordination to the simple vanadate - the commonly accepted reason for the low catalytic activity of the vanadate - cannot explain this phenomenon.
