Summary: In this work, a facile method for the fabrication of high-efficiency N-doped carbon catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol was reported. The catalyst showed excellent performance with the introduction of N atoms, which enhanced electron transfer and promoted the adsorption of 4-NP ions, leading to high catalytic activity. This study not only provides a versatile strategy for preparing advanced N-doped carbon materials, but also offers useful guidance for designing and developing biomass-derived metal-free catalysts for various catalytic reactions.

This transformation allows the synthesis of a wide range of biologically important 3-alkylated quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones under metal- and external photocatalyst-free conditions. The method shows good substrate scope, functional group tolerance, chemoselectivity, and regioselectivity.

Summary: The use of electricity as a traceless oxidant provides a sustainable and novel approach to synthesize N,N'-disubstituted indazolin-3-ones through an intramolecular anodic dehydrogenative N-N coupling reaction. This method offers mild reaction conditions, easy experimental setup, excellent scalability, and high atom economy. Various indazolin-3-one derivatives were synthesized with yields up to 78% using inexpensive and sustainable electrode materials and a low supporting electrolyte concentration. Mechanistic studies suggest a biradical pathway and the cleavage of protecting group can be used to access single 2-aryl substituted indazolin-3-ones.

Summary: This article demonstrates that quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects can significantly enhance the rate of electron transfer (ET) without the use of cavities. By incorporating the effect of infinite one-photon states into Marcus theory and introducing the concept of electron transfer overlap, the study provides new insights into the involvement of cavity-free QED effects in ET reactions.

Summary: The first chemo- and regioselective one-pot convergent synthesis of 2H-1,3-thiazin-4(3H)-ones has been achieved successfully using fi-ketothioamides and alkyne derivatives of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI)-ester under mild conditions with good to excellent yields. This cascade [3 + 3] annulative strategy offers metal- and additive-free conditions, an open atmosphere, non-hazardous reagents, and easy purification. It not only provides an effective approach to access various 1,3-thiazin-4-ones, but also expands the research domain of thioamides.

Summary: This study presents a groundbreaking method for achieving regioselective Markovnikov-type hydroarylation of alkynes without the use of any metal catalysts. The utilization of specific catalyst systems involving 2-amino-perimidinium bromide and TFA allows for the expansion of substrate range, including arenes and alkynes, in the absence of solvents. The correlation between stoichiometric reactions and experimental data supports the proposed reaction mechanism.

Summary: Direct functionalization of C(sp(3))-H bonds is a useful method for obtaining a variety of heteroarene derivatives. However, its application is limited by the need for catalysts or oxidants. In this study, a mild and eco-friendly photochemical protocol was developed for decarbonylative C-H alkylation reactions using quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones and aliphatic aldehydes with air as the oxidant at room temperature. These catalyst- and oxidant-free reactions exhibited good functional group tolerance and a wide substrate scope.

Summary: Under the catalysis of both Pd(dppf)Cl2 and Cu(OAc)2, a three-component domino reaction of thioamides, benzyl isocyanide, and water resulted in novel 1,2,4-thiadiazolidin-3-one cyclic compounds. In contrast, the same reaction with tertiary alkylisonitriles in the presence of rare earth metal salt [La(OTf)3] produced (E)-N-(1,2-diamino-2-thioxoethylidene)benzamide open chain products. This divergent reaction enabled the formation of five (N-S, C-S, C-O, and two C-N) or four (C-S, C-N, C-O, and C-C) new chemical bonds. Mechanism studies revealed that the oxygen atom in the product was derived from water.

Summary: Catalytic enantioselective electrochemical synthesis, as an efficient and sustainable approach, has recently gained attention in obtaining chiral, non-racemic molecules. Fine-tuning of reaction conditions using minute differences in potential allows for high chemoselectivities. Although the number of methods is limited, they enable a variety of bond-forming reactions with high yields and enantioselectivities. This review surveys literature published in the past four years.

Summary: Cocrystallization of CuI with NCNMe2 in the presence of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-FIB) and 1,4-dibromotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-FBrB) in MeCN resulted in the formation of three cocrystals. The solid-state structures of these cocrystals were studied using X-ray diffraction. Perfluorinated haloarenes act as combined sigma- and pi-hole donors and form intermolecular contacts with the copper clusters through halogen bonding and pi-hole interactions with the iodine ligands. Theoretical calculations suggest that the formation of (cubane)•(perfluorinated haloarene) pi-hole dimer is slightly more energetically favorable than (cubane)•(perfluorinated haloarene) HaB-based sigma-hole dimer. These interactions involve additional hydrogen bonding and pi-hole(N-CN)•••X (X = Br, I) contacts, leading to moderately strong noncovalent binding between the copper clusters and the aromatic HaB donors.

Summary: This study reports the planarity of the benzothienoiodolium cation and the preorganization it provides for the hydrogen, halogen, and chalcogen bonds formed by the phenyl hydrogen, iodolium iodine, and thienyl sulfur. Crystallographic analysis reveals the coupling of these bonds to a single anion, coordinated via the supramolecular and heteroditopic synthon XB/HB or XB/ChB. The interactions of these synthons act synergistically and result in unusually short chalcogen bonds formed by the thienyl sulfur.

Summary: Analysis of X-ray crystal structures of newly prepared thiocyanate Pd-II and Pt-II complexes revealed the bifurcated ((M) - (N))…S contacts in which angles M…S=C are close to 180 degrees. The noncovalent interactions of M…S=C=N-M' were categorized as linear (approximately 180 degrees) and bent (angle M…S=C 80-120 degrees). The linear structures were primarily determined by crystal packing effects and orbital interactions, while the bent structures were influenced by electrostatic forces.

Summary: Hantzsch esters have emerged as versatile reagents for enantioselective organic transformations in the last century. They can selectively reduce various multiple bonds, such as C=C and C=N, as hydride transfer agents under mild reaction conditions. Additionally, they are effective for the dearomatization of heteroaromatic substances and can participate in cascade processes. In recent years, they have also been employed in photoredox reactions, acting as sacrificial electron and hydrogen donors, as well as alkyl or acyl radical transfer agents.

Complexes Pt1-5 exhibit intense red photoluminescence with high quantum yields. The substitution of H-to-F and H-to-Cl leads to significantly higher electroluminescence brightness, which is attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the F-containing complex Pt2 and Cl-containing complex Pt3.

Summary: Nitrogen-containing heterocycles, such as morpholin-2-ones, are important structural elements in biologically active substances and can serve as synthetic intermediates. A new method for regioselective cross-dehydrogenative coupling between morpholinones and cyclic imides was developed using copper(I) chloride as a metal catalyst and molecular oxygen as the oxidant. The C-N coupled products were obtained in high yields under mild conditions, and they have potential applications in the development of biologically active compounds as well as functionalized polymers or PROTACs.

Summary: In contrast to V(v) complexes with various organic ligands, a simple vanadate without any additive is inactive in neutral medium toward the oxidation of alkanes with H2O2. In this work, we discovered that the insufficient activation of H2O2 upon coordination to the simple vanadate - the commonly accepted reason for the low catalytic activity of the vanadate - cannot explain this phenomenon.
