The role of ovarian hormones, nitric oxide, and their interaction on learning and memory has been widely investigated. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of Acute (A) and Chronic (C) L-Arginine (L-Arg) administration on learning and memory in ovariectomized (OVx) rats. Forty-five rats were divided into six groups: 1) sham, 2) OVx, 3) sham-L-Arg-A, 4) OVx-L-Arg-A, 5) sham-L-Arg-C, 6) OVx-L-Arg-C. The animals of sham-L-Arg-A and OVx-L-Arg-A were acutely treated with 500 mg/kg of L-Arg during 5 test days. Sham-L-Arg-C and OVx-L-Arg-C chronically received 500 mg/kg/day of L-Arg during 8 weeks before 5 test days. The animals in sham and OVx groups received 1 ml/kg saline instead of L-Arg. At the end of the experiment, the animals were tested in Morris water maze and the escape latency and traveled path to reach the platform were compared between groups. Results showed that the escape latency and traveled path in OVx group were significantly higher than in sham group (p<0.05). The animals in OVx-L-Arg-A group had significantly lower traveled path length and escape latency compared to OVx group (p<0.001). Chronic treatment by L-Arg had no significant effect on learning and memory in OVx and sham-operated animals. It seems that L-Arg has a role in Morris water maze tasks disturbances in OVx rats but it needs to be further investigated.

Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonist, Valsartan, Has Beneficial Effect in Lung Metastasis of Colorectal Cancer Treated with Fluorouracil

Fereshteh Asgharzadeh, Niloufar Naghibzadeh, Milad Hashemzehi, Asma Mostafapour, Seyed Mahdi Hassanian, Amir Avan, Majid Khazaei

Summary: This study investigates the anti-metastatic effects of valsartan, an angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1R) antagonist, in a lung metastasis model of colorectal carcinoma (CRC). The results show that valsartan, especially in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), significantly reduces lung metastatic nodules and metastatic area. Additionally, it decreases inflammatory and angiogenic markers, while increasing oxidative stress markers. This suggests that valsartan, when used in combination with standard chemotherapeutic agents, can have a synergistic effect in treating CRC lung metastasis.

Summary: The dysregulation of the TGF-beta signaling pathway has been observed in the development of gynecological cancers, providing potential therapeutic targets and prognostic biomarkers. This article provides an overview of the biological role and clinical impact of TGF-beta inhibitors as single agents or combination therapies in gynecological cancers, specifically focusing on clinical trials. Inhibition of TGF-beta shows promise for the treatment of gynecological cancers, and several inhibitors are currently being tested in clinical trials.

Remodeling of the Gut Microbiota in Colorectal Cancer and its Association with Obesity

Nima Zafari, Mahla Velayati, Shima Mehrabadi, Sedigheh Damavandi, Majid Khazaei, Seyed Mahdi Hassanian, Gordon A. Ferns, Amir Avan

Summary: The increasing burden of colorectal cancer and its rising prevalence in young adults highlight the importance of understanding its mechanisms, risk factors, and treatment options. Obesity is positively associated with colorectal cancer, and gut microbiota dysbiosis plays a pivotal role in its carcinogenesis. Sequencing studies have shown altered composition and ecology of intestinal microorganisms in both colorectal cancer and obese patients, identifying certain bacteria as key players. This review aims to provide an overview of how gut microbiota influences the development and progression of colorectal cancer, and discusses the potential links between gut microbiota and obesity. Evidence supporting targeted interventions on the microbiota for reducing cancer risk and enhancing therapy efficacy is also presented.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a leading cause of mortality globally and presents challenges in diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy. Cancer-testis antigens (CTAs) have been identified as potential biomarkers and targets for cancer immunotherapy. Numerous studies have reported the dysregulation of CTAs in gastric cancer, and clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate their immunotherapeutic potential.

Summary: Cervical cancer, as a leading cause of cancer-related death in women, requires novel therapeutic approaches for improved effectiveness. Mxene-based nanocarriers, such as Ti3C2-Fe3O4@SiO2-FA, show promise in targeted drug delivery for cervical cancer treatment. The nanocarrier, when magnetically controlled, exhibits significant tumor growth suppression and synergistic therapeutic efficacy with pharmaceuticals.

Summary: This study explores the therapeutic potential of curcumin in attenuating post-operative adhesion band formation in animal models. Results showed that curcumin significantly decreased the severity, length, density, and tolerance of peritendinous adhesions as well as the incidence and severity of abdominal fibrotic bands post-surgery. Curcumin may decrease inflammation by regulating the recruitment of inflammatory cells and oxidant/antioxidant balance, and reduce fibrosis by decreasing quantity, quality, and grading of fibers, and collagen deposition.
