Summary: Adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth and infection, affect millions of people worldwide annually. Current interventions, including universal screening and intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis, have improved early-onset disease outcomes but have not effectively reduced the incidences of late-onset disease or complications occurring early on during pregnancy. Lactoferrin, a glycoprotein with strong antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity, shows promise as a potential therapeutic for preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes caused by Group B Streptococcus infection.

Summary: Aquaculture is a crucial economic activity, but intensified culture practices have led to the emergence of diseases. Actinomycetes have been found to play important roles in improving water quality, enhancing immunity, and exhibiting antibacterial activities. However, the exact mechanisms of action of actinomycetes in aquaculture need further investigation through novel biotechnological tools.

Summary: The development of a novel wound dressing with highly effective antibacterial and wound healing properties has been the focus of this study. Through a simple electrostatic interaction method, a novel and injectable hydrogel composed of lactoferrin and lithium magnesium silicate was synthesized. The physical and biological properties of the hydrogel were characterized and it was found to have good antibacterial properties and biocompatibility. The hydrogel was able to effectively promote wound healing in a rat skin wound model, achieving a much higher healing rate compared to other groups.

Summary: Lactoferrin-binding protein B (LbpB) is a lipoprotein on the surface of Neisseria that plays dual roles in iron acquisition from lactoferrin and protection against cationic antimicrobial peptides. Structures of LbpB from N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae in complex with holo-Lf reveal interactions and preferences, shedding light on how LbpB captures and preserves lactoferrin for iron piracy and antimicrobial defense evasion.

Summary: Lactoferrin, an iron-binding glycoprotein, has multiple functions including antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities. This study generated three novel human lactoferrin fragments, which were predicted to have antimicrobial activity. However, none of the new fragments showed antimicrobial properties, except for hLF 1-11, which was lethal against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Summary: Lactoferrin (Lf) is a multifunctional glycoprotein found in human and mammalian milk that has various functions including immune regulation, anti-inflammation, antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. Its ability to chelate iron and interfere with the cellular receptors of pathogenic microorganisms and their hosts contributes to these functions. Lf is non-toxic and compatible with other supplements, making it widely used in food nutrition, drug carriers, biotechnology, and feed development. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in the structure and physicochemical properties of Lf, as well as clinical studies on human diseases, aiming to serve as a reference for further research and development of Lf-related functional products.

Summary: Helicobacter pylori is the main causative agent of gastroduodenal diseases, and its eradication has become challenging due to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains. Lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein, has shown antimicrobial properties and its concentrations increase during H. pylori infection. Although lactoferrin alone cannot eradicate H. pylori, recent studies have explored the potential of oral lactoferrin supplementation as a part of eradication therapy.

Summary: Women's intimate health is influenced by factors like metabolic disorders, hormonal balance, and the microbiota of the genital tract. Maintaining a balance of symbiotic bacteria like Lactobacillus is crucial for preventing infections and inflammation in the genital tract. The protein lactoferrin plays a key role in bridging innate and acquired immunity and has prebiotic activity that can benefit the microbiota in the gastrointestinal and genital tract.

Summary: Lactoferrin, a cationic iron-binding glycoprotein, is used as a food supplement for humans and has potential as a microbicide, microbiostatic, and immunostimulant. Administering bovine lactoferrin to dairy animals can lead to physiological changes that enhance resistance to pathogens. Despite lack of consensus on how bovine lactoferrin affects fish physiology in vivo, in vitro assays suggest similarities to effects seen in mammals.
