Summary: This study introduces novel modified rice protein (MRP)-ammonium shellac (NH4SL) enteric composite coatings to protect probiotics during storage, thermal treatments, and simulated gastrointestinal digestions. The MRPpH13-NH4SL suspension showed better stability than other suspensions due to the improved solubility and stability of MRP at a higher pH. Overall, the composite coatings significantly enhanced the viability of probiotics in various conditions, making them a promising option for probiotic-containing products.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential of modified anhydrous milk fat as an encapsulating material for Lactobacillus acidophilus LA3. Encapsulated L. acidophilus showed high viability after 60 days of storage, with lower temperatures resulting in microparticles with a dry, fine and dispersed appearance. In contrast, higher temperatures led to microparticles with a granular appearance and less dispersion.

Summary: A one-step fabrication method for thin films and shells is developed using nature-derived eggshell membrane hydrolysates (ESMHs) and coffee melanoidins (CMs), which are discarded as food waste. The nature-derived materials prove biocompatible with living cells, and the method allows for the construction of cell-in-shell nanobiohybrid structures. The shells, formed on individual Lactobacillus acidophilus, effectively protect the cells in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), with further enhanced protection through Fe3+-mediated shell augmentation.

Summary: In this study, the effects of a combination therapy using a phage cocktail (Pc) and Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) in an S. typhimurium-induced colitis murine model were compared. The combination therapy resulted in complete removal of S. typhimurium and significant improvement in intestinal barrier and colonic pathological damage. Short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels were also increased in the combination therapy group. Additionally, the combination of Pc with acetate and reuterin released by L. reuteri (PcReAc) showed similar effects. This study provides a new concept for the treatment of inflammatory diseases caused by intestinal pathogens.

Summary: Evidence suggests that viable, heat-inactivated, and ultrasonically-lysed Lactobacillus plantarum H6 cells can improve hypercholesterolemia in mice by regulating gut microbiota and metabolites related to lipid metabolism. These cells can decrease blood lipid levels, alleviate liver damage, and improve glucose and insulin tolerance. Muribaculaceae may be a potential biomarker for effective cholesterol reduction, and the gut microbiota and biochemical indices can be restored through fecal microbiota transplantation.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of action of Lactobacillus acidophilus KLDS1.0901 on apoptosis in colon cancer cells. The results demonstrate that L. acidophilus KLDS1.0901 can inhibit the proliferation of HT-29 and Caco-2 cells and induce cell apoptosis. Transcriptomics research reveals that L. acidophilus KLDS1.0901 may be involved in the apoptosis process through the nuclear factor kappa B and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways.

Summary: The probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus LA14 showed protective effects on liver injury induced by D-galactosamine in rats, alleviating serum markers, histological damage, and inflammatory cytokine levels. It modulated gut microbiota, metabolism, and hepatic gene expression. Moreover, confirmation of its ability to alleviate liver injury in acetaminophen-induced mouse model suggests a potential application in liver injury prevention.
