Aim: Given that prematurity has deleterious effects on brain networking development beyond childhood, the study explored whether an early intervention such as Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in very preterm preemies could have influenced brain motor function up to adolescence. Methods: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied over the primary motor cortex (M1) of 39 adolescents born very prematurely (<33 weeks gestational age, 21 having received KMC after birth, 18 Controls with no KMC) and nine adolescents born at term (>37 weeks gestational age, >2500 g) to assess the functional integrity of motor circuits in each hemisphere (motor planning) and between hemispheres (callosal function). Results: All TMS outcomes were similar between KMC and term adolescents, with typical values as in healthy adults, and better than in Controls. KMC adolescents presented faster conduction times revealing more efficient M1 cell synchronization (p < 0.05) and interhemispheric transfer time (p < 0.0001), more frequent inhibitory processes with a better control between hemispheres (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: The enhanced synchronization, conduction times and connectivity of cerebral motor pathways in the KMC group suggests that the Kangaroo Mother Care positively influenced the premature brain networks and synaptic efficacy up to adolescence.

Ethnic Disparities and Incidence of Postoperative Complications in Obese Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty: Analysis of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Data Set

Robert Alfaro, Kevin Kinter, Alexander Mihas, Grettel Castro, Pura Rodriguez, Juan Zevallos, Adel Elkbuli, Noel Barengo, Juan Ruiz-Pelaez

Summary: The study found that Hispanic ethnicity was associated with a higher likelihood of postoperative complications in obese patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty compared to non-Hispanics. Hispanic patients were more likely to receive transfusion and have prolonged length of stay, but less likely to experience wound disruption.

Kangaroo mother care had a protective effect on the volume of brain structures in young adults born preterm

Nathalie Charpak, Rejean Tessier, Juan Gabriel Ruiz, Felipe Uriza, Jose Tiberio Hernandez, Darwin Cortes, Adriana Montealegre-Pomar

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether providing Kangaroo mother care (KMC) in infancy affected brain volumes in young adulthood. The results showed that the volumes of the main brain structures associated with intelligence, attention, memory, and coordination were larger in the group that had received KMC. Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated the direct relationship between brain volumes and duration of KMC.

Summary: This study examined the management, outcomes, and resource use of frail patients hospitalized for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The findings showed that frail patients had lower odds of overall revascularization and coronary angiography, but higher odds of receiving coronary artery bypass grafting and hemodynamic support. Frail patients also had higher in-hospital mortality, longer length of stay, and higher costs. The study suggests that collaborative efforts can improve management strategies, resource use, and patient outcomes.

Summary: Myocarditis is significantly associated with higher in-hospital mortality and adverse hospital outcomes among patients with COVID-19. The rate of in-hospital mortality is higher in COVID-19 hospitalizations with myocarditis, and the survival rate is lower. Myocarditis is also significantly associated with increased odds of cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, mechanical ventilation, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Early suspicion of myocarditis is important for prompt diagnosis and management.

The impact of the Coronavirus disease 2019 on hospitalizations for coronary artery revascularization: results from California State Inpatient Database

Summary: This study assessed the impact of COVID-19 on percutaneous coronary artery intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) hospitalizations. It found that there was a decrease in PCI and CABG hospitalizations from 2019 to 2020, while viral pneumonia hospitalizations increased. The study emphasizes the importance of implementing initiatives to encourage patients to receive treatments and control the spread of COVID-19 to improve PCI and CABG hospitalizations.

Summary: This study compares the educational effects of Traditional Care (TC) and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on the long-term consequences of prematurity or low birth weight. The results show that KMC has a greater impact on preschool attendance and school absenteeism compared to TC, but has a weaker effect on math test scores.

VALS: Supporting Visual Data Analysis in Longitudinal Clinical Studies

Duvan A. Gomez, Nathalie Charpak, Adriana Montealegre, Jose Tiberio Hernandez

Summary: Visual data analysis helps experts explore relationships, patterns, outliers, and unexpected changes in different phenomena. In longitudinal studies, this becomes more important due to complex processes and a large number of variables. VALS, a framework for visually exploring longitudinal clinical data, includes a data model, task categorization, feature engineering techniques, and interactive visualizations. Developed in collaboration with healthcare experts, a VALS-based tool prototype was shown to be useful in a real-world case study.

Summary: This study investigates the association between the use of e-cigarettes during pregnancy and unfavorable birth outcomes, using data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. The findings suggest that women who reported e-cigarette use during pregnancy had a 62% increased odds of experiencing unfavorable birth outcomes.

Association Between Race/Ethnicity and Survival in Women With Advanced Ovarian Cancer

Justin J. Cheng, Bu Jung Kim, Catherine Kim, Pura Rodriguez de la Vega, Marcia Varella, Carolyn D. Runowicz, Juan Ruiz-Pelaez

Summary: This study found that insurance status did not significantly impact the effect of race on ovarian cancer survival, but the extent of disease did. Ovarian cancer mortality was similar between non-Hispanic black and non-Hispanic white women with distant disease, but higher in non-Hispanic black women with regional disease. Further research is recommended to investigate the reasons behind this disparity.
