Aim To test how the quality of the outdoor environment of child day care centres (DCCs) influences children's health. Methods The environment was assessed using the Outdoor Play Environmental Categories (OPEC) tool, time spent outdoors and physical activity as measured by pedometer. 172/253 (68%) of children aged 3.05.9 from nine DCCs participated in Southern Sweden. Health data collected were body mass index, waist circumference, saliva cortisol, length of night sleep during study, and symptoms and well-being which were scored (1-week diary 121 parent responders). Also, parent-rated well-being and health of their child were scored (questionnaire, 132 parent responders). MANOVA, ANOVA and principal component analyses were performed to identify impacts of the outdoor environment on health. Results High-quality outdoor environment at DCCs is associated with several health aspects in children such as leaner body, longer night sleep, better well-being and higher mid-morning saliva cortisol levels. Conclusion The quality of the outdoor environment at DCCs influenced the health and well-being of preschool children and should be given more attention among health care professionals and community planners.

This Is What We Don't Know: Treating Epistemic Uncertainty in Bayesian Networks for Risk Assessment

Ullrika Sahlin, Inari Helle, Dmytro Perepolkin

Summary: This paper highlights potential gaps in the treatment of uncertainty when using Bayesian networks for environmental risk assessment and proposes a consistent framework for treating epistemic uncertainty to help close these gaps. It emphasizes the importance of differentiating between aleatory and epistemic uncertainty and communicating both direct and indirect uncertainties in ERA. Probabilities, intervals, or scenarios are expressions of direct epistemic uncertainty, and the type of Bayesian network determines the treatment of parameter uncertainty.

Robust Decision Analysis under Severe Uncertainty and Ambiguous Tradeoffs: An Invasive Species Case Study

Summary: Bayesian decision analysis is a useful method for risk management decisions, but has limitations in considering severe uncertainty in knowledge and value ambiguity in management objectives. Robust Bayesian decision analysis can handle these issues by modeling severe uncertainty and value ambiguity through bounds on probability distributions and utility functions. A case study on environmental management problem in Sweden demonstrates that robust Bayesian decision analysis provides a transparent methodology for integrating information in risk management where data is limited and tradeoffs are ambiguous.

Summary: In a series of online surveys between March and October 2020, the willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine was studied in relation to sex, trust in experts, and worry about the virus. Results showed that female participants were less willing to accept the vaccine, while trust in medical and scientific experts, as well as worry about the virus, were the strongest correlates of vaccine acceptance.

Pollinators, pests and yield-Multiple trade-offs from insecticide use in a mass-flowering crop

Summary: Trade-offs between pesticide use, pollinators and yield in pollinator-dependent, mass-flowering crops may cause conflicts between conservation and agronomic goals. This study proposes a framework to explore these trade-offs, using red clover as an example. The results indicate that the insecticide thiacloprid can increase seed yield without negative effects on the key pollinator, Bombus terrestris, and the presence of red clover benefits pollinator populations.

A model of wild bee populations accounting for spatial heterogeneity and climate-induced temporal variability of food resources at the landscape level

Summary: This study developed a spatially and temporally explicit theoretical model to evaluate the impact of system changes and within-season variability in resources on wild bee population sizes and crop visitation rates. The model captures the importance of food resource availability at the colony and landscape level for bee populations and crop visitation rates, as well as the potential threats of climate and land use changes to bee populations.

Iterative importance sampling with Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling in robust Bayesian analysis

Ivette Raices Cruz, Johan Lindstroem, Matthias C. M. Troffaes, Ullrika Sahlin

Summary: Robust Bayesian analysis, based on a set of priors, enables estimation of parameters and quantification of uncertainty using bounded probability. This paper proposes an iterative importance sampling method for robust Bayesian inference relying on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling, and derives a new expression to account for correlation in the MCMC samples. The method is applied to estimate the lower bound of the overall effect in a meta-analysis and compared to a grid search method under different levels of prior-data conflict.

A note on EFSA's ongoing efforts to increase transparency of uncertainty in scientific opinions

Ullrika Sahlin, Matthias C. M. Troffaes

Summary: The commentary discusses the importance of evidence-based uncertainty analysis in Europe, focusing on EFSA's ongoing development in this area. It welcomes the discussion on improving uncertainty treatment and communication in risk analysis, emphasizing the need to distinguish different types of communication and facilitate, rather than diminish, uncertainty description and communication between risk assessors and decision-makers. The authors also appreciate EFSA's efforts in guiding scientific experts and risk assessors in uncertainty analysis based on a modern and scientific view.
