Summary: Pregnancy requires higher levels of nutrients, including iron, for the growth and maintenance of the fetus. Iron deficiency during pregnancy can lead to serious health issues, making iron supplementation essential for pregnant women. Studies suggest that lactoferrin can be an effective prophylaxis and treatment for iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy, offering various beneficial effects on iron homeostasis and overall health.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether intravenous ferumoxytol is superior to oral ferrous sulfate for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia in pregnancy. The results showed that intravenous iron significantly increased maternal hemoglobin, hematocrit, iron, and ferritin compared to oral iron.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of two food-derived bioactive oligopeptide iron complexes on pregnant rats with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and their offspring. The results showed that these iron complexes significantly increased hemoglobin, iron, and ferritin levels in the pregnant rats with IDA, reduced liver inflammation and tumor necrosis factor alpha secretion. Additionally, the iron complexes improved the growth and nutritional status of the offspring.

Summary: This study found that ferrous bisglycinate supplementation, compared to other iron supplements, can increase hemoglobin concentration and reduce gastrointestinal adverse events in pregnant women. However, there was no significant impact on hemoglobin and ferritin concentrations in children. More research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of ferrous bisglycinate compared to other iron supplements in other populations.

Summary: Oral contraceptives can reduce menstrual blood loss, decrease the risk of anemia and iron deficiency, with some adding supplemental iron. A study found no significant differences in hemoglobin and iron status concentrations after one year of use between iron-containing and non-iron-containing oral contraceptives.

Summary: This study assessed the feasibility of anemia, iron deficiency, and iron-deficiency anemia surveillance among first-trimester pregnancies using electronic health records. It found that approximately 2.7% of pregnancies had anemia, with about half of those cases having both low hemoglobin and low hematocrit. Iron deficiency was present in approximately 26.8% of pregnancies with anemia and 23.5% of pregnancies without anemia.

Summary: Despite comparable treatment efficacy for iron deficiency anaemia, FCM was associated with a higher incidence of hypophosphataemia compared to FDI. Further studies are needed to investigate the long-term clinical consequences of hypophosphataemia and the mechanisms underlying the differential effects of FCM and FDI on patient-reported fatigue.

Summary: The feasibility of monitoring anemia, iron deficiency, and iron-deficiency anemia among pregnant women using electronic health records has been assessed. This method can be used to monitor the prevalence and trends of anemia in pregnant women, but obtaining representative estimates of iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anemia may be challenging if iron assessment is not routine.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficacy of a new nutritional supplement called pig skin collagen peptides ferrous chelates (PSCP-Fe) in treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA). PSCP-Fe effectively reverses the hematological abnormalities associated with IDA, as well as alleviating hepatocyte apoptosis and necrosis. Additionally, PSCP-Fe restores the disrupted gut microbiota profile in IDA rats, suggesting its potential as a new treatment option.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the perception of cognitive decrement in gynecological cancer patients undergoing medical treatment. The results showed a significant reduction in perceived cognitive impairments and an improvement in depression state after treatment. Factors such as menopausal state, tumor site, stage, and treatment modality may influence the variables analyzed.

Summary: Pregnancy related transient osteoporosis of the hip (PR-TOH) is a rare condition that typically occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy, characterized by sudden pain in the hip, anterior thigh, and buttocks. It is a benign and self-limiting disease, often becoming a non-obstetric indication for Caesarean delivery, caused by bone marrow edema.

Summary: Status epilepticus (SE) in pregnancy is a life-threatening emergency for both mother and fetus. Literature data on SE management during pregnancy are limited. Prompt treatment and a multidisciplinary team are crucial. Benzodiazepines are the first-line drugs, followed by levetiracetam and phenytoin. Valproic acid should be used only as a last resort. Anesthetic drugs may be needed for refractory SE, with propofol and midazolam as preferred drugs. Magnesium sulfate is the first-line treatment for SE in eclampsia. Termination of pregnancy is recommended in case of failure of general anesthetics. Further research is needed to establish a standardized treatment protocol.

Summary: Italian gynecologists believe that E2-based contraceptive pills have benefits related to safety, good tolerability, and low adverse events, particularly in reducing the risk of thromboembolism. They mostly consider E2-based pills as the first choice in oral contraception and meeting the features of an ideal pill. Market research data suggest that the use of E2-containing COCs should increase compared to traditional EE-based compounds.

Summary: The European Vulvovaginal Epidemiology Survey (EVES) sub-analysis investigated the impact of history of breast cancer (HBC) on vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA), sexual function, and quality of life in postmenopausal women. The study found that women with a history of breast cancer were more likely to have VVA symptoms, but there was no significant difference in sexual function and DIVA scores between women with and without HBC.

Summary: Short-term and long-term steroid contraceptive systems may have negative effects on bone health in adolescent girls, but seem to have minimal impact on bone health in perimenopausal women. Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) may lead to bone loss with prolonged use, while other progestin-based contraceptives do not have detrimental effects on bone health. Further randomized studies are needed for confirmation.
