Summary: TB-specific mortality rates are around 15 times higher for SP-TB than for SN-TB patients. Despite being less infectious, SN-TB may be responsible for equivalent numbers of secondary infections as SP-TB due to its much longer duration.

Summary: The Chinese Parkinson's Disease Registry (CPDR) is one of the largest multicenter, observational, longitudinal, and natural history studies of Parkinson's disease (PD) in China. It aims to expand the understanding of clinical features, genetic, imaging, and biological markers of PD progression.

Summary: In this study, Parkinson's disease patients on standard therapy experienced greater declines in FEV1 and FVC compared to healthy nonsmokers of similar age, while DLCO remained relatively stable. This suggests that changes in lung volume due to progressive PD-associated respiratory muscle weakness may be the main contributing factor to the decline in lung function.

Summary: The incidence of hospitalizations for Parkinson's disease in Spain has steadily increased from 1997 to 2012. However, data on the trends from 2010 to 2019 are lacking. This study used the Spanish National Hospital Discharge Database to analyze hospital admission rates and mortality for Parkinson's disease from 2010 to 2019. The study found that hospitalizations for Parkinson's disease increased over time, with a higher incidence among males and older age groups. The study also identified factors associated with mortality in Parkinson's disease patients. Adjusted mortality rates remained stable, indicating the need for better management and care for Parkinson's disease.

Summary: There has been a significant increase in Parkinson's disease mortality globally, with greater increases seen in men than in women, and in older than in younger people. This study provides important insights into the trends of Parkinson's disease mortality and suggests the need for future research, healthcare planning, and provision.

Summary: This study compared all-cause and cause-specific mortality between individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and those without PD. The results showed that PD was associated with a higher risk of mortality in all age groups and genders. The leading causes of death in PD were nervous system diseases, circulatory diseases, respiratory diseases, infectious diseases, and external causes.

Summary: This study examined the incidence and temporal trends of albuminuria in type 1 diabetes patients in Finland. The cumulative incidence of severe albuminuria decreased over time, while the incidence of moderate albuminuria remained stable. These findings are important for understanding the complications of type 1 diabetes.

Summary: This study evaluated the costs and health outcomes of noninvasive tests in patient management strategies for diagnosing advanced fibrosis in NAFLD patients. The results showed that the cost per quality-adjusted life year was above 50,000 for all diagnostic algorithms compared to no-testing. The most promising diagnostic algorithm had a cost per quality-adjusted life year of around 181,000 compared to no testing. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the value of testing increased if treatment slowed down disease progression.

Summary: The study in Taiwan found that the incidence of herpes zoster was higher during the months of May to October with high ambient temperature and strong ultraviolet radiation. For every 1 degree Celsius increase in ambient temperature per month, the incidence rate of herpes zoster increased by 0.072 per 10,000 persons per month. Similarly, for every 1 MJ m(-2) increase in monthly ultraviolet radiation, the incidence rate of herpes zoster increased by 0.313 per 10,000 persons per month. There is a significant association between ambient temperature, ultraviolet radiation, and the development of herpes zoster.

Summary: The study found that hospitalizations for PD transiently decreased in 2020 compared to 2019, and the frequency of COVID-19 was significantly higher in PD patients, especially in older age groups. COVID-19(+) inpatients with PD showed higher incidences of established risk comorbidities than non-PD COVID-19(+) subjects, particularly hypertension and chronic kidney disease.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the degree of leg length discrepancy (LLD) in patients treated with in situ fixation with screws for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and identify the risk factors for LLD development. The study found that LLD and articulotrochanteric distance difference (ATDD) were significantly higher in patients with moderate slips compared to those with mild slips. The degree of slip angle was only associated with the degree of LLD. Younger age and a larger degree of slip angle were associated with the degree of LLD in moderate slips. Age at surgery did not affect LLD, and there were no factors related to the degree of LLD in mild slip. Monitoring for LLD may be necessary only for patients with moderate slip who undergo in situ screw fixation.

Summary: This study found that integrated treatment for chronic HCV infection among people who inject drugs was more effective in terms of time-to-treatment initiation and achieving sustained virologic response compared to standard treatment. It also showed comparable SVR rates among those who initiated treatment. Scaling up integrated treatment models could be crucial in the elimination of HCV.

Summary: Over the past two decades, there has been a significant improvement in disability progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, potentially linked to the introduction of disease-modifying therapies. A study in a near-complete and geographically well-defined population in the south-east of Norway found changes in the natural course of MS over time. Factors such as data completeness, relevant timeframes, and demographics are highlighted as important when comparing different MS populations.

Summary: Orthostatic hypotension is associated with an increased risk of heart failure, especially the risk of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Orthostatic blood pressure response may serve as an early marker for heart failure risk.
