Summary: This study isolated a highly productive laccase-producing bacteria, Bhargavaea bejingensis, from soil samples collected from the paper and pulp industry. The extracellular and intracellular laccase activities of the bacteria after 24 h incubation were 1.41 U/mL and 4.95 U/mL, respectively. The laccase-encoding gene of this bacteria was sequenced and bioinformatically characterized to be structurally and sequentially homologous to the CotA protein of Bacillus subtilis. The laccase produced by B. bejingensis was classified as a three-domain laccase with several copper-binding residues.

Summary: The research investigated the proteome dynamics during sporulation of Bacillus subtilis vegetative cells under nutrient limitation. Protein co-expression analysis identified four modules, with brown and green modules being upregulated during sporulation containing proteins associated with sporulation, while blue module showed negative correlation and contained ribosomal and metabolic proteins. Besides known transcription regulons, some proteins co-expressed with brown and green modules may also play roles during sporulation. Levels of some coat proteins decreased late in sporulation.

Summary: This study proves the probiotic traits of Bacillus velezensis TPS3N, Bacillus subtilis TPS4, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens TPS17, which were isolated from the gut of Nile tilapia, through genomic analysis. Gene clusters responsible for acid and bile tolerance, adhesion, and colonization of the host's gut were identified. Gene markers for bacteriocins and secondary metabolites were also found, suggesting their potential use as alternatives to traditional antibiotics. In addition, the isolates were shown to enhance the host's immunity, aid in digesting complex feed ingredients, and possess genes for synthesizing vitamins and amino acids. This study provides valuable insights into these isolates and opens avenues for genetic manipulations to enhance their characteristics.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different spacer arms on enzymatic activity and oligosaccharide yield of xylanase immobilized on cellulose beads. By surface functionalization of the beads with endo-1,4-beta-xylanase from Thermotoga maritima, xylooligosaccharides with degrees of polymerization (DPs) in the range of 4-6 were successfully produced. The findings highlight the importance of topochemical engineering and provide insights into the enzymatic production of longer xylooligosaccharides.

Summary: Using Raman tweezers and live-cell phase-contrast microscopy, this study characterized the lysis process of individual Bacillus subtilis cells carrying PBSX prophage during spores' germination, outgrowth, and vegetative growth. The findings showed that nucleic acid intensities in induced cultures decreased rapidly after prophage induction, with a delay before cell burst, and the latent time and burst time varied in cell populations under different culture conditions.

Summary: The ComFC protein is essential for natural transformation and is involved in transporting DNA through the cell membrane and handling single-stranded DNA in the cytoplasm. The crystal structure of ComFC and its affinity for single-stranded DNA suggest that it plays a crucial role in the recombination machinery.

Summary: In this study, computational analytics were used to quantify the morphological response of Bacillus subtilis to the proximity of an antimicrobial source. The results revealed that the inner core, characterized by wrinkled formations, is more preserved compared to the periphery. Additionally, a crescent-shaped colony morphology and changes in the growth substrate of macrocolonies exposed to the antimicrobial were observed.

Summary: This study elucidated the crystal structure of a bivalent domain-swapped Fab dimer, which recognizes the E2 envelope glycoprotein of HCV. The dimerization is mediated by the deletion of a single residue, leading to a unique Fab structure that can be used as a fiducial marker for single-particle cryoEM analysis of HCV E2. Bivalent domain-swapped Fab dimers engineered based on this structure may also serve as a means of doubling the effective size of conventional Fab-protein complexes for cryoEM.

Summary: Bioconversion of lignocellulosic resources to renewable energy through the secretion of endoxylanases shows promise in the efficient production of fuels and chemicals. Genomic comparisons of xylanolytic species provide evidence of the potential for these systems to be transferred to other organisms. Coordination of gene clusters encoding intracellular enzymes is essential for substrate induction or repression. Overall, this research highlights the potential for bioconversion in the development of renewable energy sources.
