In the title compound, C20H20O5, the 2,3-dihydro-1H-indene ring system is essentially planar [maximum deviation = 0.010 (1) angstrom] and is inclined at an angle of 4.09 (4)degrees with respect to the phenyl ring. The C=C bond has an E configuration. In the crystal, the molecules are linked into chains propagating in [102] via intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. The crystal structure is further consolidated by C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

Structure-Property Relationship of Three 2-Chloro-4-fluoro Chalcone Derivatives: A Comprehensive Study on Linear and Non-linear Optical Properties, Structural Characterizations and Density Functional Theory

Qin Ai Wong, Ching Kheng Quah, Xin Ai Wong, Shivaraj R. Maidur, Huey Chong Kwong, Yip-Foo Win, Parutagouda Shankaragouda Patil, Neelamma B. Gummagol

Summary: This work focused on the relationship between molecular structure and non-linear optical (NLO) property of the chalcone derivatives. Through push-pull effect, donor-acceptor substitutions were made on both rings to develop excellent NLO materials. Three new crystals of 2-chloro-4-fluorochalcone derivatives with different donor end groups were synthesized to evaluate the donor dependence of their second-order hyperpolarizability. The grown crystals were confirmed and analyzed, and their intermolecular interactions were visualized. The electronic absorption spectrums were investigated to discuss the impact of intramolecular charge transfer and energy gap on NLO properties. Theoretical electronic properties were compared with experimental results. Thermally-induced NLO parameters were measured, and the solution samples showed promising NLO performance.

Synthesis and structural studies on the supramolecular architecture of two novel proton transfer molecular salts of 2-aminopyridine

P. J. Srijana, B. Narayana, B. K. Sarojini, Qin Ai Wong, Ching Kheng Quah, U. Likhitha

Summary: In this study, two new molecular salts (AP-PHBA and AP-NA) of 2-aminopyridine (AP) were synthesized using p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) and nicotinic acid (NA) as the GRAS molecules. The thermal stability of both salts was found to be higher than that of the AP molecule. The UV-Vis spectrum analysis showed a bathochromic shift in AP-PHBA due to the extended conjugation caused by the hydroxy group of PHBA, while no such shift was observed in AP-NA. Both salts exhibited a two-point charge assisted acid-pyridine heterosynthonic ring motif dominated by N(+)-H...O- and N-H...O linkages. The crystal structures of the salts were characterized by ribbon and chain motifs formed by hydrogen bonding interactions. Hirshfeld surfaces analysis revealed the importance of the hydroxy group (PHBA) and pyridine N (NA) in stabilizing the crystal systems. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the crystal structure and supramolecular packing of AP-PHBA and AP-NA salts.
