Summary: Traditional genotyping methods are limited in quantifying genetic diversity and structure, while next-generation sequencing has not been properly tested in highly mobile species. This study compared microsatellite and RAD-sequencing analyses in investigating population structure in the declining bent-winged bat across Europe. The results show that microsatellites were not informative in individual-based analyses, but genomic SNPs provided resolution on regional substructures and confirmed suspicions of philopatry and spatial partitioning in the species.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the species assemblage, genetic diversity, and host specificity of bat flies and wing mites found on Schreiber's bent-winged bat Miniopterus schreibersii and greater horseshoe bat Rhinolophus ferrumequinum in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The findings show that despite direct contact among hosts, there is a high degree of host specificity and segregation among ectoparasite species.

Summary: Climate change has led to a significant decline in red spruce populations in the Southern Appalachians. The study found that red spruce has undergone introgressive hybridization with black spruce, and the northern populations of red spruce have higher genetic diversity and differentiation. Fossil data suggests that red spruce and black spruce occupied separate refugia during the last glaciation period and experienced post-glacial migration and hybridization. The projected climate change may lead to the extinction of pure southern red spruce populations.

Summary: Beringia, a dynamic region between Asia and North America, has influenced avian divergence and speciation through intercontinental colonization, population splitting/reuniting, and isolation. This has resulted in taxonomic splits and the presence of endemic bird species and subspecies. The region is particularly important for Charadriiformes and Passeriformes, with varying levels of diversity over evolutionary time. Genetic evidence suggests that most Beringian avian taxa originated in the past 3 million years. The region also holds potential for future evolutionary diversification with undifferentiated populations of at least 62 species.

Summary: Past anthropogenic disturbances have decreased the altitude of Mediterranean Fagus sylvatica forests. This study focuses on an unmanaged relic subalpine F. sylvatica stand in southern Apennines, Italy, which is at the highest species range elevation limit and represents an important glacial refugium. The subalpine F. sylvatica stand shows unique tree biometric attributes and understory species assemblage, suggesting the value of its inclusion in priority areas networks for long-term management strategies.
