Protein adsorption affects the function of cells and determines the bioactivity of biomaterial implants. Surface structure and properties of materials determine the behavior of protein adsorption. In the present study, two biphasic calcium-phosphate ceramics (BCPs) with different surface structures were fabricated by pressing and H2O2 foaming methods. Their surface characteristics were analyzed and the in vitro and in vivo protein adsorption on them was investigated. Porous BCP showed higher ability to adsorb proteins, and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) adsorption notably increased with increasing in vivo implantation time. The strong affinity of BCP to TGF-beta 1 might provide important information for exploring the mechanism of the osteoinduction of calcium phosphates. (c) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Summary: The surface properties of wood fiber filled polymer composites depend on filler loading, distribution, and orientation in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the addition of wood fibers affects the surface structure, modulus, and hardness of the composites. Additionally, increasing amounts of wood fibers result in higher hydrophilicity of the composite surface.

Summary: Interfacial adsorption and particle formation during the processing of biopharmaceutics were studied in this research. The driving forces and rate of adsorption of a monoclonal antibody to the silicone rubber surface, as well as the influence of formulation parameters on particle concentration and size distribution, were investigated. It was found that formulation parameters, pH, and ionic strength, had an effect on the total amount of adsorbed protein and the formation of particles larger than 25 mm.

Summary: Surface charge and in vitro corrosion resistance are important parameters for biomaterials in the interaction with the biological environment. This study analyzed the in vitro bioelectrochemical behavior of second-generation oxide nanotubes (ONTs) on a Ti-13Zr-13Nb alloy. The ONTs were produced by anodization and their properties were characterized using microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. The results showed that electrolyte type and strength influenced the bioelectrochemical properties of the ONTs layers.
