Summary: This project, organized in response to the floods and landslides in the Balkan region in May 2014, conducted seismic and electric resistivity surveys to identify potential landslide layers and high-risk locations. Additionally, it recommended countermeasures within the budgetary restrictions of local governments. The project not only achieved technical goals but also provided practical experience for students and brought together participants from diverse backgrounds. The assessment emphasized the importance of incorporating volunteer geoscientific surveys into overall recovery and prevention programs for maximum effectiveness.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bosnia and Herzegovina implemented quarantine and social distancing measures, which had mental, social, and economic consequences on diet and food behaviors. The pandemic led to changes in consumers' shopping behaviors and food sourcing, with a decrease in shopping frequency and an increase in the purchase of local food items. Additionally, Bosnians aimed for healthier diets and increased awareness of food during the pandemic.

Summary: This study investigated the purchasing patterns of street food and takeaway food in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, and found that takeaway venues had higher customer influx and buying rates compared to street food sites. Industrial food products were more prevalent in street food venues, while takeaway purchases mainly consisted of homemade foods. Customers in takeaway venues were more likely to buy both food and beverages, especially during lunchtime and in city centres. The findings reflect the local food culture and dietary behaviors, providing insights for designing interventions tailored to these food environments and customer habits.

Summary: Our study focuses on a large transboundary karst catchment in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, covering an area of over 2000 km(2). Through the use of different datasets, we were able to divide the regional catchment into six subcatchments and create a hydrogeological map. These research findings are important for establishing site-specific groundwater protection zones, conducting water balance calculations, and planning future research efforts.

Summary: This paper analyzes the social impacts of modern small-scale mining as perceived by four small communities in Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. The study reveals that local employment, slowing down migration, and the socio-economic development of the region are the main social impacts of mining development. Furthermore, the scale of mining operations is not considered as a determining factor by local residents, while the socio-economic context and historical legacy play important roles in forming social acceptance.

Summary: This study investigates the immediate effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumer knowledge and reported behaviors linked to food waste in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The findings reveal that Bosnia has a low rate of household food waste and a favorable attitude towards food waste prevention. Additionally, consumers are familiar with common expiry labels and adjusted their buying and consumption patterns due to the pandemic. These research findings are essential for evidence-based policy development in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the post-pandemic recovery period, and can contribute to promoting more sustainable consumption habits.

Summary: EHV-1 causes economic loss to the equine industry and is spread through latency and reactivation cycles, leading to various diseases. Genetic variations within the viral genome are associated with strain neuropathogenicity and geographic origin. The study examined EHV-1 distribution and diversity in unvaccinated horses, finding a high prevalence of neuropathogenic strains, with significant diversity in strains from the Balkan region.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of digestate on the yield and nutrient content of kohlrabi through field experiments. The results showed that the use of digestate significantly increased the yield and optimized the microelement content in the leaves. However, the application of digestate did not increase the plant-available nutrients in the soil, and it had an impact on the lead content in kohlrabi stems.
