Summary: This study aimed to evaluate year-by-year changes in depressive and burnout symptoms among medical students. The results showed that the prevalence of significant depressive symptoms and high emotional exhaustion increased significantly as the years of study progressed. Early interventions to prevent, detect, and treat these symptoms may be beneficial for the physician community.

It is important for educational institutions to train teachers to identify and handle students with externalizing symptoms of MDE, as well as to address conflicts between students and teachers.

The results showed that there is a reciprocal relationship between PSU and DS, and DS plays an important mediating role between PSU and SI. Timely reduction of PSU and improvement of DS may help prevent SI among university students.
