Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence and characteristics of adverse drug reaction-related hospital admissions (ADR-HAs) in France. The results showed a significant increase in ADR-HA incidence over the past decade. The most common ADRs included hemorrhagic events, hematological disorders, and acute renal failure. A substantial proportion of ADRs were considered preventable due to noncompliance with medication guidelines.

Summary: Limited knowledge about adverse drug events caused by drug-drug interactions (DDI-ADEs), this study aimed to provide detailed insights about DDI-ADEs related to three frequent, high-risk potential DDIs in critical care settings. Through retrospective data analysis from ICU patients admitted to ten hospitals in the Netherlands between January 2010 and September 2019, it was found that DDI-ADEs have a high preventability and severity rate.

Summary: This study identified the risk factors for respiratory complications related to pediatric sedation, including cardiac and neurologic comorbidities, crying before sedation, a history of snoring or upper respiratory infection, and prolonged duration of sedation. Proactive management before sedation is critical to prevent adverse respiratory events in children undergoing propofol-based sedation.

Summary: This study explored new adverse events (AEs) related to tramadol use using both social media and conventional pharmacovigilance data. The results identified several novel AEs associated with tramadol use, some of which were not listed on the drug label. Vascular disorders and tramadol-induced pain were found to be potentially serious AEs.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of adverse effects of antidepressants and over-the-counter drugs interactions through a retrospective chart review. The results showed that the simultaneous use of antidepressants and other drugs could lead to adverse events. Some over-the-counter drugs were found to have pharmacokinetic interactions with antidepressants, resulting in categorized side effects. The study suggested monitoring the use of over-the-counter drugs by patients as they may increase the severity of side effects of antidepressants.

Summary: This study analyzed the incidence and preventability of adverse events related to healthcare in adult patients at a Brazilian teaching hospital. The incidence rate of adverse events was 33.7%, with common types including general care, medications, and nosocomial infections. A portion of the events were found to be preventable, and patient's length of hospital stay was identified as a risk factor for the occurrence of adverse events.

Summary: Laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) is a growingly studied and applied methodology for drug delivery. This systematic review aimed to assess the safety outcomes of LADD and found that it can lead to adverse effects such as erythema, oedema, pain, and crusting. However, no life-threatening adverse effects were reported. Further research is needed to quantitatively determine the risks.

Summary: This multicentre observational study investigates the incidence and characteristics of bullous cutaneous immune-related adverse events (irAEs) associated with checkpoint inhibitor (CPI) therapy. The study finds that these irAEs are rare but can occur after cessation of treatment, and discontinuation of CPIs may be necessary for management. Prompt recognition and referral to dermatology are crucial for optimal management and patient outcomes.

Summary: The human microbiota, consisting of symbiotic microorganisms, plays a crucial role in human physiological functions. While the impact of an altered microbiota on diseases like chronic inflammatory diseases and psychiatric diseases is well-studied, its role in the host immune response to bacterial and viral infections is still not fully understood. Recent evidence highlights the alterations in the microbiota of patients with viral infections such as post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS). This review emphasizes the biological and clinical significance of the associations between the microbiota and COVID-19 infection and how microbiota-produced metabolites modulate immune responses to COVID-19 infection.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic has caused nearly 760 million cases and 7 million deaths worldwide as of February 2023. Multiple variants, such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron, have emerged with increased transmissibility and immune evasion capabilities. The most recent variant, Centaurus BA.2.75.2, shows a higher affinity for ACE-2 receptors and potential resistance to vaccines and antiviral treatments.

Summary: Poor adherence to oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) can lead to therapy failure and risk of complications. This study aimed to determine the adherence to OADs in patients with T2D and estimate the association between good adherence and glycemic control. The systematic review and meta-analysis included 156 studies and showed that the proportion of adherent patients was 54%. There was a significant association between good glycemic control and good adherence, indicating that improving adherence could reduce the risk of complications.

Summary: Fungal infections, especially drug-resistant forms like Candida and Aspergillus spp., are increasing in prevalence and causing severe diseases. This is primarily due to the growing number of immunocompromised patients and the emergence of resistant strains. Unlike bacterial infections which have a wide array of antimicrobial drugs, there are only a few classes of antifungal drugs available, leading to a limited therapeutic armamentarium. This review provides a comprehensive overview of systemic mycosis, current antifungal drug compounds, and the molecular mechanisms of antifungal resistance.

Summary: In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, asylum seekers, refugees, and foreign-born migrants are more likely to suffer from physical, mental, and socioeconomic consequences owing to their existing vulnerabilities and worsening conditions in refugee camps around the world. It is critical to educate migrants and newcomers about immunization to achieve health equity worldwide. However, it is unclear whether government vaccination policies prioritize the health information needs of migrants globally.
