Summary: This review discusses and summarizes the supramolecular self-assembly of hybrid macrocycles containing both cucurbit[m]uril (CB[m]) and pillar[n]arene. The CB[m] and pillar[n]arene in these hybrid macrocyclic systems can act as competitors in capturing specialized guests and as cooperators in building advanced hybridized macrocycles by controlling their characteristics in host-guest inclusions. Furthermore, they are also employed for fabricating advanced supramolecular self-assemblies, such as mechanically interlocked molecules and supramolecular polymers, playing significant roles in catalyzing reactions, connecting monomers, and stabilizing guest molecules to adopt a favored structure geometry ready for assembling.

Summary: Since the successful separation of different cucurbit[n]uril homologues in 2001, the field of cucurbit[n]uril supramolecular chemistry has rapidly developed. The combination of Q[n] cavity size and various external stimuli has led to the creation of various Q[n]-based mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs), including (pseudo)rotaxanes, catenanes, dendrimers, and poly(pseudo)rotaxanes. This review article highlights the important advancements in the field of Q[n]-based MIMs over the past two decades, discusses examples of heterowheel (pseudo)rotaxanes and poly(pseudo)rotaxanes involving Q[n]s, and reflects on the opportunities and challenges of constructing Q[n]-based stimuli-responsive MIMs.

Summary: The study investigated the host-guest inclusion complex between cucurbit[7]uril and thymoquinone in aqueous solution. Experimental techniques such as H-1 NMR and UV-visible spectroscopy confirmed the formation of a stable inclusion complex. The complexation stoichiometry was determined to be 1:1 with a moderate binding affinity, supported by both experimental and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the cytotoxic effect of the CB[7]-TQ complex was enhanced against cancer cells, demonstrating the potential of CB[7] as a drug carrier with low toxicity.

Summary: In this work, organic supramolecular linkers, CB[6] and BPHF@CB[6], were used to assemble dodenuclear silver chalcogenolate clusters into three one-dimensional materials under different synthesis conditions. The crystal structures of these CB[6]-based silver cluster-organic rotaxane frameworks were well resolved, and their emission properties were systematically investigated. This construction strategy involving organic supramolecular linkers provides a new methodology for cluster-assembled materials with intriguing structural and functional properties.

Summary: A novel cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6])/carbon quantum dots (CQDs) material was reported, which was prepared by solvothermal and nitrogen doped methods. The obtained m-Q[6]-CQDs exhibited good water dispersibility, photostability, and strong blue fluorescence emission. The m-Q[6]-CQDs also showed good selectivity for metal ions, with fluorescence quenched by Hg2+ but enhanced by Al3+. The fluorescence of the m-Q[6]-CQDs could resist interference from other metal ions and high ionic strength environments, and they demonstrated low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility for optical bioimaging of human prostate cancer (PC-3) cells.
