Screening programs have been implemented in the USA and are currently underway in the UK, with a framework called SPIRAL to define future research scope.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a novel convolutional neural network for the classification of typical perifissural nodules, showing excellent performance in distinguishing typical PFNs and agreement with radiologically trained readers. The CNN-based system has potential in clinical and screening settings to rule out perifissural nodules and increase reader efficiency.

Seasonal prevalence and characteristics of low-dose CT detected lung nodules in a general Dutch population

Summary: This study investigated whether the presence and characteristics of lung nodules in the general population detected by low-dose computed tomography varied by season. Results showed that seasonal diseases with inflammation as underlying pathophysiology may influence the presence and characteristics of lung nodules, with a higher detection rate of certain types in summer and others in winter, suggesting further investigation into underlying pathophysiology could help optimize management strategies for CT-detected lung nodules in clinical practice.

A contrast-enhanced-CT-based classification tree model for classifying malignancy of solid lung tumors in a Chinese clinical population

Summary: A contrast-enhanced CT based classification tree model was developed to classify solid lung tumors in clinical patients as malignant or benign. The model showed high accuracy in automatically categorizing tumors based on CT characteristics, demonstrating higher discriminatory power than radiologist's diagnosis. This model could assist radiologists in making recommendations for follow-up or surgery in patients with solid lung tumors.

Comparison of National Comprehensive Cancer Network and European Position Statement protocols for nodule management in low-dose computed tomography lung cancer screening in a general Chinese population

Summary: A study comparing the European Position Statement (EUPS) and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) protocols in a Chinese asymptomatic population undergoing low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening found that the EUPS protocol, with its lower referral threshold, led to more referrals to pulmonologists compared to the NCCN protocol, potentially resulting in earlier cancer diagnosis. The EUPS volume protocol recommended fewer participants for short-term repeat LDCT scans compared to the EUPS diameter protocol. Further follow-up studies are needed to assess the impact of both protocols on cancer diagnosis over time.

Summary: There is a strong relationship between airflow limitation and lung cancer risk, which is also influenced by smoking status. Smokers with airflow limitation are an important target group for lung cancer prevention.

Lung cancer screening with low-dose CT: Simulating the effect of starting screening at a younger age in women

Summary: Our results suggest that negative-misclassification results could exceed that of four out of five experienced radiologists, and radiologists' workload could be drastically diminished by up to 86.7% when using AI as an impartial reader in baseline lung cancer screening.

Detection and size quantification of pulmonary nodules in ultralow-dose versus regular- dose CT: a comparative study in COPD patients

Summary: This study evaluated the detectability and semi-automatic measurements of pulmonary nodules in ultralow-dose CT (ULDCT) and regular-dose CT (RDCT) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The results showed that ULDCT significantly reduced the radiation dose compared to RDCT and there was no significant difference in nodule detection and measurements between the two techniques.

Performance of Lung-RADS in different target populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the performance of Lung-RADS (versions 1.0 and 1.1) in detecting lung cancer in different populations. The results showed that studies in high-risk populations had higher sensitivity and lower specificity than studies in general populations. Non-Asian studies tended to have better diagnostic performance than Asian studies. Limited evidence was available for the performance of Lung-RADS version 1.1 and its applicability to Asian populations.
