Summary: This study explored the capacity characteristics of five long-term WZ configurations at a major signalized intersection in Toronto. The Highway Capacity Manual WZ model was found to significantly overestimate the traffic capacity at the study sites. The analysis assessed the hypothesis that the saturation headway is further compressed when long queues are present on site. The study also developed probability distribution functions of the saturation headway and multiple regression equations to estimate WZ capacity reduction induced by heavy vehicles.

Summary: This paper presents a novel method to compute measures of effectiveness (MOEs) at a signalized intersection using vehicle trajectory data collected by drones. The study uses drone raw data at a busy three-way signalized intersection in Athens, Greece and estimates various MOEs such as queue length, spillback occurrence, vehicle stops, travel time, delay, crash rates, and fuel consumption. The results show promising findings and demonstrate the feasibility of estimating MOEs in real-time using drone data, allowing for consideration of different traffic conditions.

Summary: This paper proposes a capacity model to investigate the influence of automated dedicated lanes on the capacity of signalized intersections. The study analyzes the car-following modes and the impact of automated dedicated lane settings on average headway in mixed traffic flow. A new capacity model integrating automated dedicated lanes is derived based on the classic capacity model, and a signalized intersection capacity model is proposed considering automated dedicated lanes using the saturation flow rate method. The numerical simulation experiments demonstrate that automated dedicated lanes contribute to improving traffic capacity, and the capacity of signalized intersections can be increased by nearly 1.25 times with automated dedicated lanes when the penetration rate of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) is less than 52%. These findings provide theoretical support for designing and optimizing signalized intersections in high-level CAV environments.

Summary: This paper aims to design speed advisory profiles for connected vehicles at isolated signalized intersections in mixed traffic flows. The benefits of fuel consumption and travel time increase with the market penetration rate of CVs, with maximum benefits achieved at the smallest value of alpha in undersaturated traffic. However, in oversaturated traffic, maximum benefits are achieved at intermediate alpha values, with decreasing sensitivity to alpha above 40%. Heterogeneity of drivers, inflows, tracking errors, and delays were also investigated for their impact.

Summary: Urban signal intersection is a key node in the urban road network, and its operational efficiency directly affects the overall operational efficiency of the road network traffic. This paper proposes a dynamic straight-right lane (DSRL) design to separate straight and right-turning vehicles in order to improve traffic efficiency at signalized intersections. The control strategy for DSRL is formulated based on signal phase time and integrated with intersection design. Experimental results show that DSRL design can significantly reduce delays for both straight and right-turning vehicles, improving the operational efficiency of intersections.

Summary: The recent advancement in industrial technology has provided opportunities to address stochastic driving behavior of humans through autonomous vehicles (AVs). Researchers have proposed autonomous cooperative-based methods for signalized intersection control under an AV traffic environment. However, controlling traffic in a mixed environment with AVs and regular vehicles is challenging and requires comprehensive evaluation of different factors and constraints. The study suggests that adaptive traffic signal control can effectively optimize signal plans for AV traffic environments, but the utilization of artificial intelligence approaches, such as reinforcement learning, should be considered for better utilization of improved AV characteristics.

Summary: This study focuses on increasing traffic capacity at signalized intersections by implementing a delayed-self-reinforcement (DSR) approach for vehicle spacing control in autonomous vehicles (AVs) without vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication. Analytical estimates and simulation results show that AVs using the DSR approach can recover a significant portion of intersection capacity achieved by CAVs with V2I communication, particularly in mixed traffic environments.
