Summary: This study examined patterns and predictors of antidepressant prescribing among adults with cancer and depression in ambulatory care settings in the United States. The results showed that only 37% of cancer patients with depression received antidepressant treatment. Race/ethnicity, physician specialty, and number of medications were significant predictors of antidepressant prescribing.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the frequency of mobility limitation documentation during visits with older adults, as well as the patient, physician, and practice characteristics associated with such documentation. It was found that the documentation of mobility limitations is generally inadequate and primarily occurs when there are significant changes in function.

Summary: This study analyzed the patterns of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in older adults with arthritis and identified risk factors for functional decline. It found that older adults with arthritis experienced a significant decrease in IADL function over time, and psychological conditions and the number of chronic diseases were identified as risk factors for increased dependence in IADL. Healthcare providers should implement strategies to manage long-term functional decline, including programs to address chronic diseases, cognitive function decline, and depressive symptoms.

Summary: Heat alerts were not found to be associated with lower mortality, but were linked to higher rates of hospitalization due to fluid and electrolyte disorders and heat stroke, potentially indicating that heat alerts prompt individuals to seek medical care.

Summary: A study with a test-negative design analyzed 41,552 admissions to 187 hospitals and 21,522 visits to 221 EDs or urgent care clinics. The mRNA-based vaccines (>= 14 days after the second dose) were highly effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection leading to hospitalization (89%), ICU admission (90%), or an urgent care visit (91%).

Summary: In older adults with current or remitted major depression, lower Sleep Regularity Index and relative amplitude were found in the current depression group, along with higher activity during sleeping and post-midnight hours. The remitted depression group displayed lower daytime activity, reduced average activity, and lower amplitude compared to controls, with all groups showing significant differences in self-reported sleep quality and depression severity.

Summary: Only 35% of adults aged 75 and older are recommended to stop surveillance colonoscopy. The presence of polyps was strongly associated with fewer recommendations to stop. The variation in endoscopist recommendations highlights an opportunity to better standardize recommendations following colonoscopy in older adults.

Summary: This study in the US examined a representative sample of adults to describe characteristics, symptoms, and predictors of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among those reporting COVID-19-like symptoms, nearly half underwent diagnostic testing, with factors such as respiratory issues and Black or African American ethnicity predictive of testing positive.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that olfactory function is closely linked to memory function. This study aimed to assess whether olfactory and episodic memory functions follow similar age-related decline trajectories, and identified three different patterns of decline. Factors such as age, sex, genetic status, cognitive activity level, and BMI were predictors of these patterns, with participants in the declining in both functions class most likely to develop dementia. Such classification can contribute to a better understanding of the factors related to cognitive decline and dementia.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between dietary patterns and depression in Chinese older adults. Using the China Health and Longevity Longitudinal Survey (CLHLS) from 2011 to 2014, a cohort study was conducted to examine the relationship between dietary patterns and the risk of depression in older adults. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify dietary patterns, and logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between dietary patterns and the risk of depression. Subgroup analysis was carried out to determine whether the association differed by gender.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence and treatment patterns of dementia in elderly patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in Korea. The results showed a high incidence of dementia in PD patients, with a significant proportion of women and the use of anticholinergic medication in PD patients with dementia. Dementia was observed to occur relatively soon after the diagnosis of PD, and donepezil was the most commonly prescribed medication for dementia treatment.
