Summary: This study investigated the diversity of intestinal microflora in specific pathogen free (SPF) and non-SPF Beagle dogs of different ages. The results showed that the number and diversity of intestinal flora in non-SPF Beagle dogs were highest at birth and gradually decreased with growth, while the results for SPF beagle samples were the opposite. In summary, the microbial complexity of the rearing environment can enrich the gut microbiota of beagles, many of which are anti-inflammatory microbiota that can increase the adaptability of the animal to the environment.

Summary: Research has shown that some vegetable oils promoted as safe alternatives to commercial sunscreens do not provide as much UVB protection as previously reported, with some offering minimal to no protection. The overestimated SPF values of these oils were attributed to authors not strictly following the original methodology.

Summary: A new method for evaluating the sun protection factor of sunscreen samples in vitro was developed, along with a new type of substrate specifically designed for hydrophilic samples. The method demonstrated accurate measurement of sun protection factor for different samples, with relatively stable results observed when using super-hydrophilic and hydroxyalkyl cellulose-coated plates.

Summary: This study explored the potential benefits of male specific-pathogen-free (SPF) White Leghorn embryos in cellular agriculture, addressing challenges in traditional poultry farming. The findings showed that myogenic precursor cells (MPCs) derived from the thigh muscles of male SPF-laying chicken embryos exhibited no difference in the expression of myogenic regulation factors. Thus, these MPCs have potential for clean animal-cell-derived protein sources.

Summary: The sun protection factor is a common metric used to measure sunscreen effectiveness. The ISO24444 method lacks criteria to compare results, posing a challenge for manufacturers and regulators. This could potentially lead to unknowingly mislabeled sunscreens.

Summary: In order to ensure good experimental results and animal welfare, it is crucial for research laboratories to maintain animals with good sanitary quality. By implementing a protocol for pathogen elimination and using SPF wild-type fish eggs, along with other measures, we successfully developed prop 1 homozygote mutants for research purposes.

Summary: Protein-based nanofibres, particularly those derived from wool keratin, were tested for their cell viability and interaction capabilities. The use of different solvents and blends influenced the morphology and cell response of the nanofibres, with hexafluoroisopropanol solution showing better results in supporting cell proliferation. The inclusion of polyethylene oxide in keratin nanofibres was found to impact in vitro cell interactions over time by altering membrane wettability and reducing interaction with water molecules.

Summary: In 2020, Amendment 1 to the 81060-2 Standard was published in an attempt to address issues related to limb size ranges. However, this study revealed inadequacies in Amendment 1 when testing significantly overlapping cuffs. As a result, Amendment 2 is currently being finalized to address these issues. The A&D UA-651 Plus/UA-651SL Plus BP monitors and accompanying cuffs not only passed the requirements of 81060-2:2018 and Amendment 1 but also a more rigorous protocol with a larger sample size.

Summary: Gyrovirus 3 (GyV3) induces persistent infection in SPF chickens, leading to diarrhea, aplastic anemia, immunosuppression, and persistent systemic lymphocytic inflammation. Clinically, infected chickens show symptoms like ruffled feathers, diarrhea, anemia, and weight loss.

Summary: Empirical applications of the free-energy principle entail a commitment to a particular process theory. Here, the authors reverse engineered generative models from neural responses of in vitro networks and demonstrated that the free-energy principle could predict how neural networks reorganized in response to external stimulation.

Summary: Radiation therapy is a crucial treatment for cancer, but there has been little progress in adjusting radiation dose based on genetic differences. This study shows that preprocessing greatly affects model predictions and existing gene expression-based models lack evidence for radiation specificity.
