Microalgae could provide a sustainable alternative to fish oil as a source for the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, growing microalgae on a largescale is still more cost-intensive than fish oil production, and outdoor productivities vary greatly with reactor type, geographic location, climate conditions and microalgae species or even strains. The diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum has been intensively investigated for its potential in large-scale production, due to its robustness and comparatively high growth rates and EPA content. Yet, most research have been performed in southern countries and with a single commercial P. tricornutum strain, while information about productivities at higher latitudes and of local strains is scarce. We examined the potential of the climate conditions in Bergen, western Norway for outdoor cultivation of P. tricornutum in flat panel photobioreactors and cultivated three different strains simultaneously, one commercial strain from Spain (Fito) and two local isolates (M28 and B58), to assess and compare their biomass and EPA productivities, and fatty acid (FA) profiles. The three strains possessed similar biomass productivities (average volumetric productivities of 0.20, 0.18, and 0.21 g L-1 d(-1)), that were lower compared to productivities reported from southern latitudes. However, EPA productivities differed between the strains (average volumetric productivities of 9.8, 5.7 and 6.9 mg L-1 d(-1)), due to differing EPA contents (average of 4.4, 3.2 and 3.1% of dry weight), and were comparable to results from Italy. The EPA content of strain Fito of 4.4% is higher than earlier reported for P. tricornutum (2.6-3.1%) and was only apparent under outdoor conditions. A principal component analysis (PCA) of the relative FA composition revealed strain-specific profiles. However, including data from laboratory experiments, revealed more significant differences between outdoor and laboratory-grown cultures than between the strains, and higher EPA contents in outdoor grown cultures.

Effects of intact and hydrolysed blue whiting proteins on blood pressure and markers of kidney function in obese Zucker fa/fa rats

Summary: The study found that diets containing blue whiting protein can attenuate the increase in blood pressure in obese rats prone to hypertension and renal failure, possibly mediated through the renin-angiotensin system, without affecting markers of kidney function.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of a co-sensitizer to prevent photodegradation of anthocyanins caused by photocatalytic activity, with an optimized co-sensitizer ratio maximizing the efficacy of astaxanthin. This leads to an improvement in the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Summary: This study examined the distribution of K. thyrsites in various organs of NEA mackerel and found that the parasite has the highest density in the musculature. The study also revealed a weak positive correlation between the parasite density in the muscle and the extent of myoliquefaction. Histological examinations showed an association between the dispersion of free myxospores and the level of muscle myoliquefaction.

A Winter-to-Summer Transition of Bacterial and Archaeal Communities in Arctic Sea Ice

Stefan Thiele, Julia E. Storesund, Mar Fernandez-Mendez, Philipp Assmy, Lise Ovreas

Summary: The Arctic is warming at a rate 2-3 times faster than the global average, leading to changes in Arctic sea ice and impacting ice-associated ecosystems. Sea-ice algal blooms play a crucial role in driving the succession of bacterial and archaeal communities in Arctic sea ice.

Anisakid parasites (Nematoda: Anisakidae) in 3 commercially important gadid fish species from the southern Barents Sea, with emphasis on key infection drivers and spatial distribution within the hosts

Arne Levsen, Paolo Cipriani, Marialetizia Palomba, Lucilla Giulietti, Julia E. Storesund, Miguel Bao

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence and distribution of parasitic nematodes in Northeast Arctic cod, saithe, and haddock. The most prevalent and abundant species found was Anisakis simplex (s.s.), with high infection levels in the viscera and flesh of cod and saithe. Contracaecum osculatum (s.l.) larvae showed moderate-to-high prevalence in saithe, haddock, and cod, while Pseudoterranova spp. larvae occurred at low-to-moderate prevalence and abundance in the viscera and flesh of cod and saithe. Body length of the fish species was found to be the most important factor influencing overall abundance of anisakid larvae. The spatial distribution of Anisakis larvae showed higher abundance in the belly flaps compared to the dorsal fillet parts. Removing the belly flaps significantly reduced larval presence in the fillets of these fish species.

Summary: This study describes for the first time the larvae of the parasite Pseudoterranova found in meso/bathypelagic fishes near Macaronesia. The larvae were identified as Pseudoterranova ceticola, which infects kogiid whales. The study also found morphological and genetic differences between Pseudoterranova from cetaceans and those from pinnipeds.

Summary: Comprehensive fjord-systems play a crucial role in transferring materials from land to ocean, but the effects of climate changes on the ecosystem and biogeochemical cycling remain poorly understood. This study presents novel data on spatiotemporal variations of seston multielement stoichiometry in the Sognefjord and highlights the importance of considering microbiota and environmental conditions. The findings have implications for evaluating environmental impact, pollution risk analysis, and monitoring guidelines.

Evaluation of NMR predictors for accuracy and ability to reveal trends in 1H NMR spectra of fatty acids

Milan N. N. Chhaganlal, Jarl Underhaug, Svein A. A. Mjos

Summary: Four different NMR predictors were evaluated for their ability to predict 600-MHz H-1 spectra of free fatty acids and fatty acid methyl esters. The predictors were evaluated on their accuracy in directly predicting the spectra and their ability to reveal trends or predict changes. The absolute accuracy for fatty acids was good, but the predictors had outliers and failed to reproduce trends or predict minor changes in molecular structure. The reliance on data from different sources may limit the relative accuracy of the predictors.

Anisakid nematodes in Trichiurus lepturus and Saurida undosquamis (Teleostea) from the South-West Indian Ocean: Genetic evidence for the existence of sister species within Anisakis typica (s.l.), and food-safety considerations

Summary: Nematode parasites of the genus Anisakis are considered important biological hazards in seafood worldwide. This study investigated the infection sites and genetic diversity of A. typica in commercial fishes from the South-West Indian Ocean. The study found two distinct phylogenetic lineages within A. typica, suggesting the presence of two sister species. The presence of these parasites in fish muscle raises health concerns for consumers.

Summary: This study aims to extract functional substances from Undaria pinnatiida sporophyll using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) and subcritical water extraction (SWE). The results showed that the consecutive green extraction method can yield extracts rich in fucoxanthin and beta-carotene, and the sporophyll of Undaria pinnatiida contains health-beneficial fatty acids. Additionally, SWE can extract substances with antioxidant, antibacterial, and antihypertensive activities.
