Summary: This study did not find a statistical correlation between the severity of ADHD symptoms and salivary OT levels in children. It suggests that impairments in the reactivity of the OT system, associated with interpersonal difficulties, may be a distinct aspect of the clinical presentation of ADHD, different from other symptoms.

Summary: Previous research has shown that training individuals to recruit cognitive control before exposure to negative pictures can increase the likelihood of using reappraisal and achieving success. This study found that individuals with high ADHD symptoms were more likely to use reappraisal after training and experienced a greater reduction in negative emotions.

Summary: The neural mechanisms and symptom correlations of ADHD may be shared between children and adults with ADHD. This study found that ADHD patients have a quadratic association in the whole-brain and most functional systems, while the limbic system shows a linear association with ADHD. The limbic system predicts hyperactivity better, while the salient attention system predicts inattention better.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze therapeutic adherence in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and allergic rhinitis (AR) and estimate the impact of adherence on ADHD symptoms. The results showed a negative correlation between therapeutic adherence and AR symptoms as well as ADHD scores. Better adherence to AR therapy was associated with a reduction in inattention symptoms in children with ADHD.

Summary: ADHD symptoms exacerbate the impact of procrastination and internalizing symptoms on emotional burden, but do not enhance the association between procrastination and internalizing symptoms. Procrastination should be the treatment target for individuals with ADHD and comorbid internalizing symptoms.

Summary: The study found significant heritability in the rates of change of white matter tract microstructural properties and connectivity between different brain networks. Changes in hyperactivity-impulsivity were associated with heritable changes in white matter tracts metrics and connectivity between attention and cognitive networks. This suggests that these heritable ADHD-associated neural phenotypes can be useful for future gene discovery and understanding.

Summary: Research on a cohort of 362 youth found significant associations between certain measures of polygenic risk, cognition, and neuroimaging with the future course of ADHD symptoms, suggesting potential predictive power. Machine-learning algorithms showed good performance in classifying individuals with ADHD symptoms into different groups based on symptom course. These features warrant further exploration for their potential use as prognostic tools.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between gut microbiome and emotional-behavioral symptoms in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The results showed that children with ADHD had lower diversity in their gut microbiota compared to the healthy control group. Certain bacteria phylotypes were found to be significantly associated with emotional-behavioral symptoms in children with ADHD. However, further research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms underlying the role of gut microbiota in ADHD pathophysiology.

Summary: The study found that offspring of mothers with anxiety and comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms have an increased risk of ADHD symptoms in late adolescence, while there is no such risk among offspring of mothers with depressive symptoms alone. Early screening and intervention for offspring with maternal anxiety and comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms are recommended.

Summary: The course of childhood-onset attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) varies across individuals, with some experiencing persistent symptoms and others having fluctuating or remitting symptoms. This study examined the longitudinal course of ADHD symptoms and associated clinical characteristics in adolescents with childhood-onset ADHD. The findings showed that about half of the participants had a consistent course of ADHD, while nearly 40% experienced symptom remission and the remaining participants had fluctuating symptoms.

Summary: Hyperfocus and flow are intense concentration experiences associated with reduced perception of irrelevant stimuli and improved task performance. Hyperfocus has been historically seen as a symptom of ADHD, autism, or schizophrenia, while flow is regarded as an enjoyable experience in positive psychology. Recent studies suggest that hyperfocus and flow may be the same phenomenon viewed from different perspectives.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features, genetic characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). Results showed that there were six patients with X-linked CGD and three patients with autosomal recessive CGD. Patients with X-linked CGD had earlier onset and diagnosis ages compared to those with autosomal recessive CGD. Prophylactic use of antibiotics, antifungal agents, and interferon-gamma might alleviate infection episodes in CGD patients. Rating: 7 out of 10.

Summary: Human iron nutrition is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. This study compared the genetic determinants of hemoglobin (Hb) concentration between Taiwanese Han Chinese and European Whites. The results showed consistent associations of specific SNPs in TMPRSS6, ABO, and PRKCE with Hb levels in both ethnic groups. Ethnic-specific associations were also observed, such as the association of AXIN1 with Hb levels in Taiwanese Han Chinese. The findings highlight the importance of both common and ethnic-specific genetic factors in Hb regulation.

Summary: This study found that metabolic disorders in midlife are associated with physical and cognitive function decline in later life. Waist circumference and blood pressure are associated with physical function decline, while high blood pressure is associated with cognitive function decline. Managing waist circumference and blood pressure in midlife may slow the decline of physical and cognitive function in later life.

Summary: The association between neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and response to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in asthma was investigated. It was found that neutrophils play a potential role in uncontrolled asthma, and NET abundance is associated with nonresponse to ICS. Furthermore, CCL4L2 was identified as a potential therapeutic target for individuals with asthma refractory to ICS.

Summary: This study compares clinical outcomes between pediatric patients with and without heart disease diagnosed with infective endocarditis (IE), and determines the risk of in-hospital death. The results show that patients with heart disease are more prone to streptococcal infections and cardiac complications, but have a lower mortality rate. Platelet count can serve as a risk factor for in-hospital mortality in pediatric patients with IE.

Summary: Food sensitization in early life can identify children at risk of developing allergic diseases. This study investigated sensitization to cow milk, egg whites, and wheat. Data from the Chang Gung Research Database was used to conduct a retrospective survey. The study found that boys were more likely to have a positive immunoglobulin E (IgE) reaction to cow milk and egg whites, and early-life sensitization to egg whites and wheat was associated with increased birth weight and length. A multivariate analysis revealed that egg white IgE positivity was linked to higher levels of total IgE, and younger age and higher birth weight and length were associated with food sensitization, particularly to egg whites and wheat.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors associated with recurrent intussusception in children aged ≤ 3 years. Male patients had a higher risk of recurrent intussusception, and higher birth weight may increase the risk. Surgical treatment and delayed onset of intussusception were associated with a reduced risk. It is suggested to closely follow up early infancy patients who received non-surgical treatment for potential recurrence.

Summary: The Chiehyuan herbal oral protection solution (GB-2) is a traditional Chinese medicine commonly used in Taiwan to combat SARS-CoV-2. This study found that GB-2 can reduce the expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in oral mucosal cells. It also showed that GB-2 can decrease the entry efficiency of various variants of SARS-CoV-2 and block the interaction between ACE2 and the RBD with specific mutations. These findings suggest that GB-2 may be a potential candidate for further research as a preventive measure against SARS-CoV-2.
