This study investigated whether common comorbidities or biochemical factors, such as allergic disease, anemia, inflammation, and neurotransmitters, are singly or additively associated with an increased risk of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We recruited 216 children diagnosed with ADHD and 216 age-, sex-, height-, weight-, and class-matched controls from 31 elementary schools in Taipei, Taiwan. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire was used to measure allergic symptoms. Fasting venous blood was collected and analyzed for complete blood count, white blood cell differential count, immunoglobulin (Ig) E level, and serotonin (5-HT) level. The results showed that symptoms of both rhinitis (OR = 2.08, 95% CI = 1.42-3.05) and eczema (OR = 1.72, 95% CI = 1.02-2.88) were significantly associated with increased risk of ADHD. Children with ADHD showed considerably lower levels of hemoglobin (p = 0.001) and 5-HT (p < 0.001) and higher IgE level (p < 0.001) and eosinophil count (p = 0.001) than did control children. ADHD risk increased with the number of aforementioned biochemical risk factors present (one factor: OR = 1.87, 95% CI = 0.87-4.18; two factors: OR = 2.90, 95% CI = 1.29-6.48; three factors: OR = 4.47, 95% CI = 1.97-10.13; four factors: OR = 6.53, 95% CI = 2.43-17.57). Findings suggest that either ADHD's etiology is multidimensional or the aforementioned conditions have shared etiology with ADHD.

Common and ethnic-specific genetic determinants of hemoglobin concentration between Taiwanese Han Chinese and European Whites: findings from comparative two-stage genome-wide association studies

Vanessa Joy Timoteo, Kuang-Mao Chiang, Hsin-Chou Yang, Wen-Harn Pan

Summary: Human iron nutrition is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. This study compared the genetic determinants of hemoglobin (Hb) concentration between Taiwanese Han Chinese and European Whites. The results showed consistent associations of specific SNPs in TMPRSS6, ABO, and PRKCE with Hb levels in both ethnic groups. Ethnic-specific associations were also observed, such as the association of AXIN1 with Hb levels in Taiwanese Han Chinese. The findings highlight the importance of both common and ethnic-specific genetic factors in Hb regulation.

Ching-Hui Tsai, Alan Chuan-Ying Lai, Yu-Cheng Lin, Po-Yu Chi, Yun-Chi Chen, Yao-Hsu Yang, Chien-Han Chen, Sheng-Yeh Shen, Tsong-Lon Hwang, Ming-Wei Su, I-Ling Hsu, Yu-Chi Huang, Anke H. Maitland-van der Zee, Michael J. McGeachie, Kelan G. Tantisira, Ya-Jen Chang, Yungling L. Lee

Summary: The association between neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and response to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in asthma was investigated. It was found that neutrophils play a potential role in uncontrolled asthma, and NET abundance is associated with nonresponse to ICS. Furthermore, CCL4L2 was identified as a potential therapeutic target for individuals with asthma refractory to ICS.

Summary: Food sensitization in early life can identify children at risk of developing allergic diseases. This study investigated sensitization to cow milk, egg whites, and wheat. Data from the Chang Gung Research Database was used to conduct a retrospective survey. The study found that boys were more likely to have a positive immunoglobulin E (IgE) reaction to cow milk and egg whites, and early-life sensitization to egg whites and wheat was associated with increased birth weight and length. A multivariate analysis revealed that egg white IgE positivity was linked to higher levels of total IgE, and younger age and higher birth weight and length were associated with food sensitization, particularly to egg whites and wheat.
